Corran and a.... SMALL ship point fortress??

By Razgriz25thinf, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Corran and Dash have pretty much owned the Rebel meta for a while now. But after the new MOV ruling, i got to thinking: What about a SMALL ship point fortress with Corran? Or even just high-performance ship, like Poe Dameron, as his sidekick?

Let's get some discussion on these two lists, and what you would run if you had the choice.

100 pts

Corran Horn

PTL, Advanced Proton Torpedoes, Fire Control System, R2-D2, Engine Upgrade

Poe Dameron

PTL, Advanced Proton Torpedoes, BB-8, Autothrusters, Weapons Guidance

OR

98 pts

Corran Horn

PTL, Advanced Proton Torpedoes, Fire Control System, R2-D2, Engine Upgrade

Keyan Farlander

PTL, Autoblaster, Accuracy Corrector, B-Wing/E2, Kyle Katarn

Bear in mind that i don't fly B-Wings regularly, and even if i did, i probably don't have the cards to outfit them according to the B-Wing meta.

However, yesterday i flew a Wedge/Poe/Jake list against the Corran/Keyan list(In addition to the fact that my opponent had literally only learned the rules to the game a few hours ago,) and he wiped the floor with me. I know a few of you looked at the Torps and thought "WHAT???" but it just so happens that the second Corran had Poe at range 1, it was a 1 hit kill from full health when i failed to block anything, and took 2 crits to my hull and 1 was a direct hit. In fact, it's as simple as firing at range 1 to get a target lock, then double tapping to fire the torps to finish off what the lasers didn't. Wedge killed Keyan easily because 0 agility and because my opponent was not appreciative of the B-Wings dial, but Wedge was smoked against Corran, and Jake spent the rest of the game desperately trying to close to range 1 out of arc to get any amount of damage through. In a tourney match, he would have more than won on MOV.

Poe/Corran i havent tested, it's just a theory, that two arc dodging high performance ships would work together really well. I'm not convinced at all that replacing BB-8 with R5-P9 or something would make Poe better, as 90% of his effectiveness is being able to BR out of arc and commit 1 forward to catch an enemy at range 1 with a focus and a TL on when the opponent expected me to 2 turn directly in front of them. As well as being able to barrel roll away from an enemy, boost away, then commit a 3 forward to zoom out of range and still be able to focus at the end.

Check out the K-Wing pilots. One of my friends ran Miranda with TLT and she was pretty much a small based tank with regen shields.

I dislike the APTs, because they are a full Z-95. While stacking points on a small ship can be viable I wouldn't put all my eggs in that basket, going down to 2 ships will most likely prove to be too extreme.

Oh and never ever put that many points into a B-Wing! They are pretty much guaranteed to die. Keyan can be viable, but only if you keep the point investment low. Stay On Target and maybe Advanced Sensors is enough to make him usefull, but not overinvest into him.

APTs are (and always have been) essentially worthless

Corran and Miranda (TLT + 3po) are probably the two biggest small-base point sponges points can buy. Corran shoots up to 45 with sensors + Ptl + r2-d2 and so too does miranda when you add homing missiles + munitions. Engines and A-Slam takes you up to 96 points.

That does not, however, get them anywhere near the idiocy of fat PWTs (thank the force for that).

lack of hull, boost, and the idiocy of a PWT (miranda's primary of 2, lack of ept and inability to abuse gunner all make hers really suck except in clutch situations where you can afford her ability) .

Poe is not a point fortress. He's very very good, but he simply cannot hold a candle to corran when it comes to surviving enemy attrition. He'll soak enemy TLTs and swarm shots like he was made for it (and he was), but against bigger, more modified stuff he needs support to down enemies before he gets obliterated

If you're putting BB-8 on Poe without Push the Limit, you're really hampering your ability to arc-dodge. Also, using Weapons Guidance causes you to sacrifice Poe's defensive ability (which again, PTL helps since you can pick up Focus and TL instead).

Just put Engine Upgrade on your Advanced Sensors, PTL'ing Corran and you've achieved that level of idiocy.

Miranda is the small fortress you're looking for, and you kit her similarly (3PO, Engine).

I like the idea, but I actually think I might go with regular Proton Torpedoes over APTs. APTs will drop more damage, but the PTs will spike damage earlier, and that's pretty important for a two ship list looking to even the odds.

hah not even close

Corran still cares about

1. his facing (arc)

2. his actions (it's so much of his survivability, even r2-d2 can't carry on his own)

3. his positioning (based on the combination of the above 2 + the E-wing's lack of 2-hard,

4. opposing pilot skill 8s and 9s (combining the above 3, corran can actually be arc-dodged)

5.guaranteed damage (5 total health, not nearly enough to chance eating obstructions or things like a-homing missiles or mines)

rebel control, conner nets, or just plain old debris will wreck Corran's ****. He is a pilot you can reliably one-round if you play well enough. Han? Ner. fatass there is invincible by comparison.

i.t.o idiocy, it's like comparing slipping on a banana peel to death by selfie. they're not even in the same league

These are all fair points. This mostly arose out of a curiosity, myself having avoided using fat PWTs like Ebola and the Plague combined, i wondered what, in my collection, might fill that space? Tournament ready it is certainly not, there is still no competition for the spot of fat PWTs, but it was a neat thought exercise.

Not a fan of that keyan build, accuracy corrector is a total waste of his ability. Give him advance sensors and put that sweet dial to work. I like the first list better. Also ace combat 4 life!
