Would you buy a card pack?

By LazorBeems, in Star Wars: Armada

Pure shower thought here. What if FFG sold packs of just cards that further expanded the existing expansions?

Like there would be a "Raider Card Pack" that would add more options for the Raider. Let's say the packs come with a new ship configuration (meaning card, base board, and tokens if necessary), a couple new titles, and maybe a mix of new upgrades and existing upgrades that would be useful on the ship (like Overload Pulse on the Raider). Fighter card packs would just be new aces for the corresponding fighter expansion (we could get Lando piloting the Falcon!).

What do you think? Would you buy it? How much would you pay?

I would buy for about $10

Vs them putting out a new ship and forcing you to buy that which might have a higher profit margin

I'd buy it in a new york minute.

Most people on here will buy multiple copies of EVERYTHING and then some :D

It would be a lot better way of releasing ship fixes than the X-wing way. It has my vote. Probably $10-15 or so seems reasonable. There's easily another half dozen Imperial Star Destroyer titles they could put out. If we can't put Thrawn on the Chimera in a year or two I'm going to be very disappointed.

I would buy it like if we got 3 of each upgrade in it four like $8.99 - $10 I would be all over that.

I've often thought that it would be a nice gesture on their part to release all the new upgrades included in a wave as a card pack separate to the models. It's less of an issue in Armada since I haven't seen a ship I don't want yet, but it'd make life a lot easier for X Wing, that's for sure.

People have been asking for this for X-Wing for years and it hasnt happened yet. I think FFG is perfectly happy with their existing business model as it promotes buying multiple ships - the more ships people buy, the bigger the order quantity, and the cheaper (per unit) to produce, package and ship, so the greater the profit overall.

If they were ever to do cards though, what if it wasnt ship titles and such - you had to still buy the model for those, cause to be honest, you only need one of each title or commanders etc, but what if you could buy a "blind" pack of other upgrade cards? I.e. the generic ones which arent unique but are often limited in number to certain packs.

So you buy a blind pack of 5 cards and get a random assortment something like:

1 x Engine techs

1 x Electronic Counter Measures

1 x XI7 Turbolasers

1 x Defensive Liason

1 x Expanded Hangers

Maybe they could even make sure it wasnt more than one of each type of upgrade or something.

The benefit is that it would get a lot more upgrade cards on the market, helping out players who just want one card, but also encourage community trading and discussion - which is never a bad thing in helping a game grow in popularity.

That's against FFG's ethos with their LCG model and game contents structure and not something I would want to see.

I would rather get them with new ships. If there aren't totally new ships to buy, then packed in with repaints. I buy mostly for the models as a collector who games, so I just use the cards I have. If they released a pack of previously released cards only, I would not buy that.

It's Star Wars and a great game, I'd buy it in an instant and three extra copies too.

I would love to see this, especially if we got more titles. However, I think it won't happen. What would be cool, though would be promos. As a reward for tournies, we could say get a gravity well offensive retrofit and then in the next wave get it again in and immobilizer 418 pack.

Amen. A Chimera title would be awesome. I'd also love a Victory-Class pack few more named VSDs, possibly with Pellaeon as one of the officers/admirals (he did lead Crimson Command for quite some time).

Print your own cards. You only need one or two you don't have already. Why not?

Never ever ever ever going to happen. Confirmed by multiple designers, Alex Davy and god knows who else repeatedly (at least for X-Wing, and there is no reason this would be different). It would wreck their entire business model.

But yes, i would!

Yes I would. I just imagine them being a random pack with foil cards.

Will it happen, nope. Nice thought though.

Not legal for sanctioned event play would be the reason.

(at least for X-Wing, and there is no reason this would be different).

Ah, but there is every reason to think Armada might be different. The expansions for it are much larger, buying multiples of a ship is significantly less enticing, and there are virtually no famous alternate paint jobs for capital ships. I'd be very surprised if they ever reprinted the ISD.

Given the way the cards work I think they're crazy to not at least consider it.

yes

Pft, take my money.

I'd be extremely surprised if it would wreck it. It might cut into sales of some of their less popular expansions that are currently bundled with attractive upgrades (Starviper, I'm looking at you!) but IMO FFG would continue to chug along just fine.
