Unsportsmanship and sore losers

By mtrein, in X-Wing

So, what is the most unsportsmanship spell you have ever witnessed while playing x-wing? Any funny/weird happenings you care to share?

I think this is just asking for people to air their dirty laundry out in view of everyone. I'm going to suggest that we shouldn't really promote that sort of idea here. This is akin to 'what's your biggest complaint with FFG' type posts, or 'which is the worst type of gamer' type post. Those posts, while potentially amusing or informative, are also similar to gossip, slander, and potentially opens this forum up to potentially rude or hurtful comments directed at players who might frequent this forum.

I say this while having had negative playing experiences. I don't think it's appropriate for me, or anyone, to air them out.

This thread isn't going to end well.

One time I lost a game and jumpkicked my opponent through a window.

I think that if someone is unsportsmanlike, it's okay to make a big hoopla about it on the forums. As long as you don't call out anyone by name, only the people involved will know the post is about them so I don't see what the big deal is.

Last week my wife was so mad that I tabled her new scum list that she made me get my own beer out of the fridge even though she was standing in the kitchen.

I mentioned it to the TO (Our Cat) and he just licked himself.

This one dude by the name of Anakin always whines heaps when he loses games. He always says things like "I am not the player I should be" and "its not fair".

This is about as serious a post as this thread deserves.

One time I lost a game. It was totally on me so I kept my cool.

You're just jealous because he's the Chosen One.

I once complained about my opponents soontir fel rolling 2-3 natural evades a turn, making my Darth Vader sticking to him in range one feel like he was merely throwing mean words at the interceptor. (Post tie advanced buff, too..)

I felt bad for complaining, though. Just some frustration that escaped.

Let's try to turn this thread around: personal confessions!

I can get genuinely frustrated when random effects (*cough* ficklegreendice *cough*) turn against me. I shouldn't, and I try not to, but most of the time the feelings just bubble up like swamp gas. If I'm beaten in a game with little to no randomness (such as chess, or Caverna, or Puerto Rico), where it's pretty much entirely because my opponent outplayed me, then I'm -fine-. No negative emotions to wrestle down, good game, that was fun! But when dice, or card draws, or whatever work against me--and we all know they will!--I often have to consciously suppress the mounting frustration and anger. And I don't always succeed.

So, tl/dr: there's times *I'm* a bad loser.

Don't get me wrong: it's never extreme (no tables actually flipped yet, no matter how much I may have wanted to at times! ; ), and I certainly don't blame my opponent. I absolutely -love- X-Wing for its style, quality, overall balance, incredible depth of strategy, and no-game-is-ever-the-same variety. But I can end up 'blaming' the dice, and no one likes to play against someone that drags the game down when he's losing. So I take my X-Wing games as opportunities for growth, slowly but steadily chipping away at that character flaw, and it is gradually getting better and easier as the months pass.

What's yours? When did *you* behave badly at the gaming table?

Yeah, I have a long-standing issue in games with getting grumpy and snippy if the dice/cards/whatever aren't playing ball. Then, in my first ever X-Wing tournament my last match was against a guy who'd congratulate me every time I got a good roll. Every time my poxy Zs rolled a natural hit and a crit against his Brobots he'd tell me "great roll!" without any hint of side or sarcasm.

And I thought "Bloody hell. That's the spirit I want to play this game in." And now I do the same thing. Because I want to win at this game, but most of all I want to enjoy playing it. And getting sour at stuff neither I nor my opponent can control wasn't helping that.

So yeah. In an infinitesimal, stupid way, X-Wing helped make me a slightly better person. In that way, it's the exact opposite of Small World.

I have a confession, I am genuinely too awesome during games. I am a great winner, an even better loser, guys want to be me, girls want to be with me, dogs get in line to hump my leg.

Is it unsportsmanship if you lose about 9 out of 10 games, rarely kill an enemy ship, and you get really frustrated and mad about it? Not at the other person, but just mad...Feel like I wasted a ton of money on a game I'll never be any good at.

I think it would be be considered a greater case of "Bad Form" if you were to give up completely on the game!

This isn't with x-wing but I have one friend who when he starts to lose will stop paying attention and start looking at his iPad instead.

He also tends to give up before he's actually lost.

I am guilty of constantly criticising my bad in-game decisions aloud, usually forgetting that I am not the only one making decisions. Its easy to blame yourself when somebody is beating you very solid because they were smart enough to use your mistakes. I just hate that I made them lol.

I can admit to withdrawing from a game and muttering under my breath when I have a string of bad luck. However, I always try to shake my opponent's hand and offer a "good game" no matter the outcome. Then shake it off and move on to the next game.

One of my opponents whined that he didn't want to stay for the final round because he wanted to go to Toschi Station and pick up some power converters.

Kids these days.

The only thing that bothers me is when my opponent and I have a minor rule confusion, then we both agree to the solution and move along BUT then during the next round, he/she gripes about the agreed upon outcome of the rule brainfart. Now, I just let my opponent decide disputes in casual gaming. During a tournament, I get the TO.

What used-to bother me: when others act like its the end of the world when I get paired up with them during a tournament. My lists are unconventional and wierd so most ppl have no planned strategy and I always get groans when pairings are announced... this used to bug me, now I soak it up. :)

How about you? OP should share also.

One time I saw a guy lose and he pulled his opponent's arms out of their sockets.

In my defence i hadn't slept well the night before and i did call the ambulance for him.
