Running NPCS Minons, Rivals, and force users, strain etc.

By Sith Warmaster, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hello All,

Forgive me if these questions have been asked, I have searched but have been unable to find the answers.

Q1) Lets say a minion takes two maneuvers, would that suffer damage instead of strain?

Q2) Replace Minion with Rival, same situation or they possess a talent which causes them to take strain, would they take damage instead of strain for using the talent?

Q3) Lets say as GM, I am running a FSE NPC (RIVAL) with the basic Force Move force power.

I would still roll the force die to activate the power as would a PC FSE, correct?

If so, and my NPC FSE only rolls dark side force points, does she flip a light side destiny point from light to dark in order to use the force power? If the above is true, it seems odd to flip the players light side destiny point from light to dark. And what about suffering the associated strain cost for using a dark side pip to activate the force power, Rivals take damage instead of strain.

I am so confused thinking about running an NPC Force using Rival, any help would be greatly appreciated.

this is one of my issues with not tracking Strain for everything.

If you allow a Minion to take an extra maneuver using strain.. they actually take and Injury losing 2 wounds.

So If I run without strain, I would rather not take extra maneuvers giving the Pcs the advantage of basically free wounds on the enemy.

By RAW, a minion cannot willingly suffer strain. So they only way to get 2 manuevers in a round is to downgrade their action.

However, a rival can willingly suffer strain. As you noted, he would take it as damage. Minions and rivals are designed to be lesser characters than the PCs. This is one of those instances in which a PC will have the advantage.

Kaosoe nailed 1 and 2, I'll have a crack at 3:

First off a GM only ever flips Dark side Destiny Points to light.

Second you need to decide if your FSE NPC is a dark side force user or light side. If they are light side then they follow all the rules for normal PC's using the Force, flipping a destiny point (as noted GM would flip a Dark to Light) suffering strain equal to the number of Dark Side pips used to activate the force power.

If on the other hand you decide the NPC is a Dark Side Force User then things essentially swap around. The Dark Sider normally uses Dark Side pips from the dice to activate their Force Powers. If they want to use any Light Side points they must flip a Destiny Point (again an NPC will be flipping a Dark Side to Light Side) and suffer a number of strain equal to the number of Light Side Force Pips used.

So make that decision as part of building the NPC and it's quite simple once you play it.

Q3) Lets say as GM, I am running a FSE NPC (RIVAL) with the basic Force Move force power.

Just a side note:You may know this, but in case you don't, NPCs aren't built like PCs, so the character in question doesn't have to be an actual FSE, it can just be a Rival with a Force Rating and powers.

Fixed that for you. :-)

Just you don't have to doesn't mean it isn't an option :-)

If you have an NPC that is likely to take a significant amount of voluntary Strain from its Talents or Force powers, classify it as a Nemesis. The only required mechanical difference between a Rival and a Nemesis is the separate Strain and Wound pools, so there you go.

Alternatively, since NPCs don't have to be built like PCs, you can just give the Rival a special NPC ability that mimics a Talent or Force power, but has a different cost or limit than Strain (even "only usable X times in a fight," which emulates the effect of having to spend Strain without actually requiring the GM to track it).
