I don't know why I felt inclined to share this, but a post on reddit about battlefoam made me think about how I store my ships and my advocacy for "not battlefoam" even though it sure does look nice. I figured I'd post some pics of mine to show how much stuff you can cram in a case with pick and pluck foam.
So, sword case. Nothing exciting, but it holds all the trays. In the big outer pockets I keep a folder for pilot cards and a folder for upgrade cards.

A tray with all the big ships, their base tokens and their stands. Beside it, a tray with all the small base ship tokens, enough small bases for almost any game, TIE Fighters, TIE FOs, and B-Wings. (No idea why this came out super grainy). You can see - space left over for a bit more.

More ships, and all the dials:

All the random bits needed for a game. Asteroids, tokens, damage deck, dice, etc. and a thing I made to hold all of my templates.

I've found this solution to be super flexible. I've retooled my case with nearly every wave, re-orienting ships, moving them to different pockets, finding additional nooks to tuck something in, and not until Wave 7 did I finally have to give in and buy a couple of new trays.
I've managed to cram into this thing:
3 A-Wings
3 B-Wings
4 X-Wings
2 Y-Wings
5 Z-95s
2 HWK-90s
2 E-Wings
2 K-Wings
2 T-70s (with room for 3)
1 YT-1300
1 YT-2400
5 TIEs
4 TIE/fos (with room for 5)
3 Interceptors
3 Phantoms
2 Defenders
2 Advanced
2 Punishers
2 Bombers
2 Lambda Shuttles
1 Decimator
1 Firespray
3 Scyks
2 Aggressors
2 Starvipers
2 YV-666s
2 Kihraxz
Whew! It feels like I've gotten a lot out of this small case.
