Yet Another Storage Solution

By GiraffeandZebra, in X-Wing

I don't know why I felt inclined to share this, but a post on reddit about battlefoam made me think about how I store my ships and my advocacy for "not battlefoam" even though it sure does look nice. I figured I'd post some pics of mine to show how much stuff you can cram in a case with pick and pluck foam.

So, sword case. Nothing exciting, but it holds all the trays. In the big outer pockets I keep a folder for pilot cards and a folder for upgrade cards.

A tray with all the big ships, their base tokens and their stands. Beside it, a tray with all the small base ship tokens, enough small bases for almost any game, TIE Fighters, TIE FOs, and B-Wings. (No idea why this came out super grainy). You can see - space left over for a bit more.

More ships, and all the dials:

All the random bits needed for a game. Asteroids, tokens, damage deck, dice, etc. and a thing I made to hold all of my templates.

I've found this solution to be super flexible. I've retooled my case with nearly every wave, re-orienting ships, moving them to different pockets, finding additional nooks to tuck something in, and not until Wave 7 did I finally have to give in and buy a couple of new trays.

I've managed to cram into this thing:

3 A-Wings

3 B-Wings

4 X-Wings

2 Y-Wings

5 Z-95s

2 HWK-90s

2 E-Wings

2 K-Wings

2 T-70s (with room for 3)

1 YT-1300

1 YT-2400

5 TIEs

4 TIE/fos (with room for 5)

3 Interceptors

3 Phantoms

2 Defenders

2 Advanced

2 Punishers

2 Bombers

2 Lambda Shuttles

1 Decimator

1 Firespray

3 Scyks

2 Aggressors

2 Starvipers

2 YV-666s

2 Kihraxz

Whew! It feels like I've gotten a lot out of this small case.

I still find myself surprised by how large the Punisher is when I see it juxtaposed alongside ships I'm used to seeing in person.

Back on topic, that seems like a nifty storage solution, as it organizes everything pretty nicely and the foam should keep your ships from getting banged up.

Probably a stupid question,

But what make are the foam trays, and do they fit into a large GW carry case snugly?

I'm currently using Feldherr for my X-Wing, but it's becoming too crowded, too fast.

I like my Plano case, especially as I can leave the ships on the stands and just pull them out. OK....I had to reorganize lately and I took my 5 Tie Interceptors and took them off the stand. They are probably the Imperial small ships I use the least. Yes...the least. Everyone uses them and I just like to be different.

What size Feldherr are you using? Their 'mini' trays fit really well into printer paper boxes - I store my collection in those and only pack what I'm playing.

That must be a monstrous plano case. Just trying to imagine how much area all my ships would take up on their stands is pretty daunting.

It is a mixture of what my local game store carries. I know there are some of the battlefoam branded pick and plucks and some generic knockoffs (or brands I'm unfamiliar with). I'm unfamiliar with GW carry cases, but they are all 13 x 7.75 of varying thickness if that helps.

An old picture. I have more now.

the cheapest and most flexible solution I have found is modular and adjustable tackle boxes. Go to walmart and get one with the adjustable well sizes. the foam ones are nice and I would use that if I custom painted my ships. But as I dont i just cant justify spending the extra cash. When that could all go to more ships

The Plano cases are based around the adjustable side wall tackle box system. A case with 4 boxes and Plenty of tabs to organize with was $40 at bass pro shops (shown in the pictures above). While a foam tray would keep them more secure in transit, I have only had one issue with a single b-wing losing a tip on his lower cannons, and that was before I started storing them face down; never an issue after that
