X Wing 5 years from now?

By atkrull, in X-Wing

So I have just been wondering what our wonderful game will be like in another 5 years? From 2012 to the end of 2014 I count 22 expansions and 18 ships (including epic).

2015 to present day we have added another possible 18 ships (including wave 8). That roughly calculates to 9 ships/ year.

So lets look ahead... in 5 years time we would roughly have about 83 ships total, give or take a few aces packs.

I am just throwing out a few questions:

What would the competitive scene look like? Will there be a more broadly reaching tournament schedule instead of store/ regional/ nationals/ worlds? Will there be Grand Prix's? Could there be a 150pt class of tournament.

How will we store all of our fleets? I already require a rolling suitcase to fit most of mine! I would hate to think of having a collection double of what I already have..... on second thought never mind it would be awesome, although it would be a hassle.

How will FFG market to new players with such a broad range of options to choose from?

Would more ships and upgrades further diversify the meta (in my opinion an good thing)?

Will someone else win Worlds other than Paul? (craziness I know :) )

Just thought I'd share this with the community as a fun looking into the future thread, no wrong answers, just wondered if anyone else thought of this:)

It would be interesting to see what a different meta would be between 100 points and 150 points if the ever tried it.

From it's original release as Rogue Trader, WH40K is fast approaching it's 30th birthday, and the Star Wars franchise will be 40 then, so I see no reason why X-Wing won't be going strong in a mere 5 years. Maybe they'll sustain the release waves, maybe it'll pare down to one or two waves per movie, depending on what LFL does with the storyline.

But yeah, I don't think our little plastic spaceships will need to retire any time soon.

I'm all for a points push to something like 150, means people can use more of the ships they own (especially with the point creep on alot of the newer ones) or make use of upgarde slots that normally get left behind for points saving at 100 & the games don't take that much longer/if at all (we've played at higher points in our club) because there is extra firepower on the table so it all sort of equals itself out. Plus I think it makes for more interesting lists with a bit more breathing room

Difficult to see. Always in motion is the future.

So many variables. Change in who holds the license, the new story group and ships, interest in the game - a new franchise might supplant X-Wing. Who knows.

That being said, i would expect more ships from the movies and less from the old EU. A slow down of expansions. Perhaps due to a new line of mass battle ground combat game.

Is there really that much left for EU ships? (ducks for cover because he is hated on this forum)

Well, we're only up to wave seven and we've already dredged up some truly obscure EU ships. The new trilogy and hopefully some of the spin-off movies will be a shot in the arm, but the only way X Wing will keep up with the same rate of releases will be to bring a pick and a shovel, because they've already scraped the bottom of the barrel and now they need to break through it and start digging. Chiss clawcraft? T Wing? Please god, no.

X Wing needs to remain a strongly and easily identified Star Wars game, and adding more and more obscure EU ships simply dilutes the brand.

Just curious, does anyone know how long FFG retains the Star War license? I remember reading somewhere they had a contract extension with Disney.

It seems to be 5 years. And yes, FFG did renew their license. I am fairly confident that FFG will still have the license in 5 years.

It will be time to get a still bigger shelf

I think taking the existing history of the game, with its already vast number of ships and upgrades, and extrapolating that out at the same rate of releases to triple the timespan... It makes my brain melt.

I think what you'll have to expect is either a slowdown in rate of releases and/or ships per release...or a complete paradigm shift in what new product looks like. Maybe they shift to mostly repaints with minimal additional pilots and upgrades. Or a gradual shift in emphasis onto the new sub factions.

I suspect it could be a bigger shift though, to something we haven't considered yet.

I still want to fly Snowspeeders against AT-ATs.

Hmm i hope itll be dead expansion wise at some point :-D I guess noone here wants to read that but at some point i would like to have a more or less complete collection without the constant urge to get more and more. As long as they sell enough it wont happen though.

I also hope very much that the will introduce some more variety of gameplay. I dont mean different upgrades or Pilots. I mean something fresh. Maybe a thought through campaign mode (like some players already did it) a mode where you play whole squads at once (i know we have armada but it could be different) whole new maneauvers or a 3D system of movement with different "height levels".

There are at least 5 movies, a couple of seasons of Rebels, a rumored live action TV series, and who knows how many new books to be released in the next 5 years. That should give them plenty of new ships, pilots and paint schemes to cover. Disney will ensure that toy sellers do not run out of Star Wars ships.

At some point they will have to get off their high horses and add prequel ships.

Yea they have new movies, but on average you're going to get 1 wave per movie, and since they usually do at least 2 waves per year, that won't cut it.

And has been said they are kind of scraping the EU barrel at this point. Other than the assault gunboat, don't see that many strong EU ship requests anymore for the most part.

I frequently play 150 pt games with my Scum buddy: I like it.

You have to be a bit more careful with low pilot skill ships as they can and will be alpha-struck before they can get a shot off, turrets are wonderful but autothrusters and bombs make turreted ships a bit less intimidating, bombs are much more deadly in the pileups and it is almost necessary to have at least one damage-sponge as the number of attacks per turn will overwhelm even the highest agility and dry up focus and evasion tokens.

The sky will have completely crashed to Earth by then

Dark age was *@$%!!!

*@$% has a habit of dying off.

Not a problem. Our flying cars as promised by Back to the Future will be here by then allowing us to avoid said catastrophe.

Mw: Dark age had some BIG issues. Including incredible power creep, best stuff being prize only and became a who has the longest range game by the time Falcons prey came out. Add to that the fact that most factions were changed from the classic BT factions and it was bound to expire.

They'd better hurry. That's only a month away.

Personally, I'm not a fan of them adding prequel ships to X-Wing.

Anywho, I thought I had heard awhile back that FFG had the Star Wars rights to the originals and EU. So, that might explain why we haven't seen any.

That game was ruined for me as soon as they introduced the Helicopters and everyone started running lists of 3(or was it 4) of that one particular helicopter. Artillery was mildly annoying but still kind of fun, those helicopters on the other hand just ruined any enjoyment in the game. It was essentially like as soon as you saw someone set those guys down on the table you knew exactly how the whole game was going to play out.

I was actually just thinking about this the other day too because the whole 4 y's with TLT reminded me so much of the cheesiness of running that 3-4 helicopter list in mechwarrior. It's no fun to play against and you know exactly how those games are going to go. Granted, 4 y's with TLT at least has some counters you can run but those helicopters man, they absolutely ruined mechwarrior for me.

Dark Age was great in the beginning, Age of Destruction was crap. And Wizkids did what they always seem to do, released too many organized play only units that were completely overpowered.

And now back to your regularly on topic thread.

Not true, but a common misconception. They have the rights to all of Star Wars, they have chosen to not do prequels up to this point and that does not look likely to change anytime soon if ever based on interviews with everyone including the CEO.
