Old, New or Both?

By Ekroy Tho, in X-Wing

On Monday 5th October I'll be sitting down in front of my Tablet to create a video. This video is where I give the results of my challenge: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/188934-challenge-accepted/and my Final Verdict on whether or not I'll be collecting any more Force Awakens.

I'll also explain why I keep talking about one or the other, not both. If I feel so inclined I'll talk about my campaign ideas too.

But I'd like to include your vote in the video, as it will be going on YouTube, so that I can represent the opinions of fans. Whatever my opinion is, it is just the opinion of one man and might not be the popular opinion.

Please no arguments or pulling each other apart. I want frank honesty. Make your vote by posting:

Old

New

Both

and feel free to give your reasons.

I'll post a "vote closed" on the morning of 5th October before I begin work on my video.

Why not ask us after the end of december? The movies quality will be a gigantic fuekheuge modifier for our opinions.

Both.

I know it's a long way off, but I would imagine you might have a hard time not collecting Force Awakens ships in the game after Wave 8.

And out of curiosity, will you not be collecting the new stuff because you don't like it as X-Wing products, or because you don't like the idea of a new SW movie(s)?

ONTh!

This wasn't helpful

so if you kit them out to have the same points total wont the balance them out to some degree just like ANY other ship????

Do what you want to do, man. Don't be the guy who has the internet make his decisions for him.

In 2015 only old Civil War era ships.

We decided not to mix P51 and Fw190 with Sabres and Mig 17. There is no need.

When 6-8 ep 7 era ships shall be available, we will speak about it

The funny thing is that P51s were actually still in service when the Mig 17 started flying so... that argument blows.

Blow? We are speaking about diferent conflicts. Civil War is not the same "war" that the ep 7 conflict. There were french and germans in WWI and II, but we do not mix the machines while wargaming. Ep 7+ is a new era, new stuff. No need to mix it.

But this is only my game group POV. I think the new ships are fine and new EPT quite interesting. But we play ep 4-6 era. No T-70 there, no T-70 on the tables. Abd I love Sabres and Migs...

I'd have to respectively disagree with that assessment.

Ep 7 seems to be a continuation of the same war.

Names changed, that's all. and war... war never changes.

Still though, P51s were still flying when Mig17s were around, Suspect both saw Korea too.

Both, because this game deserves better than to be sliced up unnecessarily.

No I see the guys point. If playing narrative etc then stick to the ships (and in some cases pilots) that were around at the time.

every group can play their own way. I was simply pointing out a flaw in the analogy.

Also E and K wings weren't really around during the GCW either, they were around some 10 years later, though again, same war, different names.

Narratives are a lot of fun, but I would advise against playing the game only that way, since you miss just as much as when you only play 100/6 deathmatches. The system is elegant beyond its theme and you shouldn't hold yourself back from mixing the hell out of everything because there is a lot to find.

If you want to play X-wing miniatures game, a game about starships in Star Wars Universe, then Both.

If you want to play a game with miniatures about the Rebel vs Imperium as seen in Star Wars IV-VI, then only old, and you only need 3 Waves of ships.

And out of curiosity, will you not be collecting the new stuff because you don't like it as X-Wing products, or because you don't like the idea of a new SW movie(s)?

I'm going to be doing a narrative campaign. Combining X-Wing, Armada and the RPGs. That's the simple answer.

I like both, but only want to campaign in one era. I'm certain Armada will get Force Awakens releases, and I can wait, and the RPGs could easily be adapted to Resistance VS New Order so no worries.

Also

The movies could be the worst thing since Jar Jar Binks and I'd still play games set at that time period. Because the miniatures are cool, and from what I've read so far so is the setting.

THIS IS NOT A "YOU MAKE THE DECISION FOR ME" TOPIC!!!!!!!!!

I'll make my own decision thank you very much! The multitude of negative topics didn't put me off getting the Starter Set in the first place.

I was going to create a video discussing the new game and was going to share the results of the vote, and any comments, while doing so. If you don't want to be included fine. If you do fine. But your opinions won't influence my decision.

And yes Swedge, I want them to be balanced when the old and new duke it out. Best out of three. But win or lose isn't about which I choose, it's just about which one wins. That's it. Just a fun challenge to see which one will win.

To sum up:

I'd choose both but I'm choosing one because I want to start up a narrative campaign that covers several games. Because I'm interested in Armada and the RPGs too,

Your opinions have nothing to do with my choice!

Wanted to include the community when posting my first public YouTube video about BOTH awesome starter sets. Sharing your views on which you'd be playing and why.

The Tie vs Tie, X-Wing vs X-Wing is some fun. Yes fun. One of those "what would happen if...." ideas.

Well, with that said here is what I do. Bare In mind that while I do play skirmish and epic, I prefer narrative.

Treat the T-70 as an early prototype and TIE-FO as special forces load out TIEs.

consider it an alternate future war where E-wings, K-wings and Defenders are in production alongside other craft. (Phantoms too actually..)

Alternatively, play Raiders and Tie Advanced against T-70s as an Imperial Remnant that doesn't join the New Order.

Actually, I think the Raider looks New Order after seeing the New Order Star Destroyers. I can totally see Raiders alongside Tie/fo's, the "black bat" shuttle and "u-boat" dropships.

Opportunities are endless for narratively justifying bizarre mixes of ships.

Indeed. Imp Vs Imp wouldn't be uncommon anyway due to the Zaarin and Harkov insurrections.

Reb Vs Reb could happen with a Rebel splinter faction.

Scum vs Scum is an easy one and can be justified too many ways to count.

Both.

No reason not to. If you want new ships that may be the only way to get them. Also, it's not like 30+ year old tech can't be used for warfare anymore. Now I'll give you that there was a brief period of time where 30 year old tech is pretty much useless but as long as some updates are made there is no reason that much of it can't stay in use.

They may not be cutting edge but how old are the B-52s and C-130s? Although ruled too expensive to use is there a plane that performs better than the SR-71? While they may have replacements planned the F-15, A-10, and F-16 are all "old" models.

Both.

For the narrative campaign I'm running, options are limited to those appropriate for the era.

But I also play various formats casually and competitively, and freely mix ships from different eras.

A lot of historians will tell you that is the same conflict with a decent length cease fire in between. Even over the course of WW1 they went from riding horses while wearing bright colors to drab fatigues and gas masks. You could argue using chemical weapons was more advanced and horrify than oat of the weapons used in the European theatre in WW2. The Cold War is really a continuation of that and the problems the west is having with the Mideast can be traced back to WW1 too.

I think of it a little like a game of risk. There are battles I the beginning but then people tend to settle in and build up a bit. Sorta the same concept.

one of the First kills in the Korean war was an F-82 shooting down a Mig-15.. F-82 is basically Two Mustangs put together.. and in Vietnam the propeller driven Skyraider shot down several migs. I believe it shot down 3 in one battle.. think of the new ships as being on the front line new production while the others belong to the national guard!! lol older and with more experienced pilots.
