Breaking News: Hasbro might have actually made a good SW board game!

By Talonbane Cobra, in X-Wing

The new Star Wars Risk they are releasing sounds like it may actually be good. Fighting the Battle of Endor on 3 fronts.

I don't work for Hasbro and well I haven't been a fan of rsk since i discovered other board games existed but this actually sounds like it could be good.

What does Tom Say?

I can't watch youtubez at work.

From reading the TC's link I wish the space battle had more capital ship action but it does sound like a lot of fun,

Breaking news! There's an off topic section!

There's a topic about it, it's nothing to do with Risk, it's queen's gambit light.

Oh, my bad.

well from watching the review vid it definitely looks worth a go:-)

think it'll go on my christmas wish list (unless FFG swamp us with wave 8 & armada wave 2 at the same time...)

It's heavily based on Queen's Gambit. It shouldn't have the RISK title applied to it. It's a great looking game though; can't wait to get it myself!

EDIT: Ninja'd.

Hasbro probably tacked on the Risk title to try and sell more. Risk is probably one of their better(best?) selling game so this is a way to trick people who wouldn't be interested in buying it.

From the article: "This changes the game from the simple wargame that is the classicRisk into a light miniatures game." - FFG needs to get on that and get Hasbro to back off on Imperial Assault then..... ;)

And the board looks like a Tie Interceptor!

Since we are already off-topic so to speak:

Y'all need to read up on the Nova Open Narrative finale if you haven't already. It was a simulation of a large(ish) battle where individual fighter engagements were played out as X-wing Miniatures dogfights.

Someone is probably already working on a version for the Battle of Endor using Imperial Assault to simulate the battle for the shield bunker.

Tom says it is in no way Risk and should have been named something else.

He gives it a seal of Excellence. Lots of randomness but fun.

Putting 'Risk' in the title is a good way to get me to dismiss it out of hand.

Thank Avalon Hill, since this is pretty much a reskin of the awesome Queen's Gambit.

I thought that, but it's not true because i read board game reviews and talk to board game people so i was always likely to hear about it even though i first ignored it due to risk.

I thought they already made Star Wars: Risk, it's called 4xTLT...

(i'll see myself out...)

The problem with Queen's Gambit and with this if it didn't say Risk: There's many that would just walk past it. Risk is still has decent brand-name recognition.

Of course anyone who opens it will immediately WTF but I get why Hasbro did this.

[looks at large Risk collection]

Yup.

Has anyone here actually played it yet?

Most of the rules were very straightforward, but I didnt see anything covering rebel fighters moving off the capital ships. There don't seem to be clearly marked "adjacent" spaces.

I've not played it but I intend to. I always wanted to play Queen's Gambit but all that 3d stuff kind of turned me off of it. This seems much more reasonable.

The 6 in 1 game sounds promising :P
