How did you start playing X-wing?

Target clearance with a Christmas gift card post wave 3 pre imperial aces.

A friend had mentioned it but i didn't know anything about it and had no clue when I picked it up that I'd be flying in worlds two years later.

Target clearance is why I was glad that the new core is findable at Target.

Hi, I'm VanorDM...

(echo) Hi VanorDM.

I too was involved in an abusive relationship with a game company.

;)

I used to play 40k but never seriously, also played a number of other games casually. I remember hearing about X-Wing back before it actually came out and being interested. But it wasn't due out for a year yet or so. So I left the memory of it in deep buffer and went on with my life.

Then one day I saw it at Target and remembered the game. Checked out the website and watched the tutorial. The fact that it was X-Wings, Star Wars, and what looked to be a truly killer game was enough to get me to go back and pick it up.

Mostly played with a friend of mine until last year when I started a league and have gotten involved in the competitive side of things. Played in the store champ but didn't do real well. Finished in the top 20 at the MN regionals, and been playing local tournaments lately.

Funny enough, it was a summer time romance that first introduced me to X-Wing. We were in my bedroom and feeling pretty lazy, when she asked me if I wanted to watch a youtube channel she liked, I said “sure”. It was Will Wheaton’s “tabletop” and the episode we watched was the one where Will and a few others played X-Wing and explained the rules as they played. I was instantly drawn in by the concept and knew I had to have it. We left my bed after the episode and went up the road to our local gaming shop and bought the starter kit. We ended up playing most of the day away. I’ve been hooked since.

Had been playing various Games Workshop games for about 20 years. it was way too time consuming (modelling, painting, building terrain and playing). I couldn't afford to keep up with it all so started playing board games. Seen that FFG was releasing x-wing and the rest is history. I've totally abandoned GW now and keep up with x-wing and Zombicide along with other various stand alone board games. Consequently I get more games in and have a much healthier bank balance.

Got a core set from a friend who attended GenCon. I had no idea it existed. I contracted the disease from him.

Aww, it was love at first crit.

I've got a closet full of "European" style board games that I've collected over the last two decades: Settlers, Agricola, Power Grid, Eclipse, Diplomacy, Advanced Civilization... And about 20 more... My 12 year old son loves pulling them out of the closet and "free playing" with the pieces (no rules, just set up imaginary battles and worlds). He asked for another game with neat sci-fi bits for Christmas so I started googling. I was looking for him for neat bits and for me for something with highly rated gameplay. Normally neat bits means nice wooden pieces. But then I saw the Star Wars miniatures.

There's zero chance I would have bought the minis if they were unpainted because no talent. And I suspect if the gameplay was more along the lines of a traditional war game lasting half a day or more, we would have bought a few minis for "free playing" and then would have stopped. Instead, my sons and I have been sucked deeply into a beautiful game with fast and short duration gameplay. And to date I've drawn two non-gamers into playing with plastic Star Wars ships in my basement with me and the boys.

This game's broad appeal (Star Wars!), beautiful minis, and easy but deep gameplay make for quite the addicting combo.

Yup I had no idea what an FFG was until I found that Falcon on Zon. I was hunting up new Star Blazers models after the new rebooted Space Battleship YAMATO 2199 series came out.

  • Got fed up of GW ( most will know what I mean ) and was looking for a alternative game I could just pick up ( I was involved with running a game club at the time ) and play , mate suggested x wing and I bought core set ....then another core set , quite a few players took it up at the club and due to

:)

Ealier this year I had just finished selling off my 40k Ork army. A lot of time and energy and money lost because I just couldn't hang with the way that game was changing. I was depressed.
A friend from work heard me talking and says "hey have you seen or heard of Xwing minis?"
I bought a Defender to test the system. A core set followed because to really play I had to have it.

Mistakes were made.

My wife was annoyed.
Very.

Here I stand as a "Squadron Leader" in my local group. I teach new folks how to play and get other people hooked. My sister contracted this disease from me, her husband got it from her......and well.....it's bad in my area.

Went to a 40k tournament at a games convention a year and a half ago, and got snagged by X-Wing evangelists.

X wing evangelists ......... I like the mental image that conjurs up :)

When I was a kid, I played old school war games like Squad Leader (still have it in a closet in good condition); a family friend had all of those old school board games with the cardboard counters.

I started seeing the cool Star Wars ships in B & N and was curious. I finally checked out some reviews on youtube (from the cardboard dungeon) and then started buying. And buying. And buying. Luckily my wife's quite patient.

I had heard about the game that was to come out for a long time before it came out. I was heavily into Warhammer Fantasty Battle at the time. I'd been really burnt out on the game and frustrated after 13 years in the game. I had heard about X-wing, but it was another cool game that I didn't want to invest in as GW was sucking in all my spare cash. There was a lot of buzz about the game and people waiting for it to be released.

I went to a tournament in South Carolina and lost every game that day. Someone had the Core set and set it up. They got Luke with R2-D2 and I had 2 generic Tie Fighters. I killed Luke in about 5 turns. I was instantly hooked. I haven't played more than 5 games of WHFB since that weekend.

The local X-wing scene died down after a year when a new game store on the other side of town opened. It was closer to most people...except me. I was out of the game for a year, but then it picked back up again. Loving it!

I went into my LGS to buy a second set of Edge of the Empire dice when I noticed the display case with X-wing models. I had seen a few youtube vids and was interested but after talking with the clerk I decided to do more research. THEN I saw this video and I was hooked. (not just because of the pretty girls, but mostly)

Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game Review - Starlit Citadel Reviews Season 2

This was just back in April of this year and I am now an avid player/collector.

I saw the Tabletop episode and thought "meh". I wasn't really going to get into it. I have quite a growing collection of board games and meet with people at this tiny store in Dallas called Madness. One satureday we showed up to play because there was this regional thing for that X-wing game. We had to walk around and watch people play before we could find a spot. A few that looks funs and I want thats later It was on my to buy list. Then Force Friday happened.... then amazon delievers.

Hi I'm new here.

Watched too many people having too much fun for too long. So I got a demo game.

Totally hooked. Catching up to the prior waves and bought all of Wave 7. Thank God the wife doesn't know the extent of my addiction.

I only started 6 months ago when I saw the game in the Tabletop Simulator (http://store.steampowered.com/app/286160/)

I play it there sometimes, but now play a LOT more in real-life :D

I'd never been a particularly serious gamer - bit of D&D, Space Hulk, Heroquest - that kind of stuff - but I was interested in getting back into it - partly just for my own enjoyment and partly because my nephews were getting to the age where they might get into that sort of thing.

I take my duties as an archetypal cool uncle extremely seriously :)

Started by dusting off my old copy of Space Hulk and replacing a few missing parts - found a second hand copy of Descent going cheap on eBay - Got a copy of Rackham's Hybrid for it's sheer loveliness, rarity, and collectability (but not for it's virtually incomprehensible rulebook :) ). Flames of War was looked at seriously, even considered 40k for a short while.

But nothing was really scratching my itch.

Then while shopping on Amazon for Christmas presents in 2013 I came across this thing called The Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures Game - checked out the tutorial video and a few batreps and was bowled over by its elegant simplicity (and the fact that it's FreakinStarFreakinWars!) - I think I dropped about £250 on it that day :)

So, my friend was like, "play this game," and then I played it.

One of my groomsmen gave me a core set as a wedding present...

Mistakes were made but the gift keeps on giving.

I used to be a decorated High Elf general. Then GW decided "Hey **** those High Elves, let's sink their home island, kill off most of their population, and merge them with their 2,000 year long civil war enemies". Shortly after, I went to my weekly game night, feeling sad and homeless, and a friend of mine invited me to play a game.

I requested as many A wings as he had, because they're my favorite ship. He said they sucked. I said I didn't care, give me as many A Wings as possible for 100 points. He said he didn't have any A Wings. I was disappointed and flew a TIE Swarm instead. Killed Luke with an academy pilot and felt amazing. Won my first game, and proceeded to buy as much as I could, which was barely anything because it was January, and all of the longshoremen in Seattle were being selfish and going on strike, so I couldn't play with any new toys. Flash forward 9 months, and now I am living in China, and teaching as many people how to play as I can. Soon, soon I will have an army of star wars nerds, and we will get our own regional!! I hope.

I got two core sets for Christmas last year. I saw that S&V was coming out, and that was all it took. By April, I had spent hundreds...

I've been in since the first wave of FFG Star Wars games. I was ecstatic about the RPG. I was excited about the LCG. And I was kinda meh on the miniatures game. At the time, for me, miniatures = hours painting little figures you paid a fortune for and maybe playing once or twice a month. Not for me. Then my friends sat me down with the core set shortly after it came out, and I promptly flew Luke off the table my first game and was pretty much hooked anyway.

Now I've grown a little burned out on RPGs in general, the LCG lost me shortly after the finally got more Scum/Scoundrel cards out to make them viable, and I now own at least two of every expansion save for the Epic ships. I guess X-Wing won.
