Kingsport and Bast

By Krysmopompas, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hey all, I'm playing a Kingsport game right now with some online chaps, and there's a question about the use of Bast's tokens.

I don't have the physical Guardian card handy, but it should say something like "you must spend all your focus" to keep Bast's token each turn.

I've always interpreted that as every other card/condition that says you need to spend all your focus: in this case your sliders are effectively frozen if you want to keep the token.

But a knowledgable guy who I've played with before, is suggesting that you must "spend" all your focus first; if you do, you get to keep Bast's token. In other words, move sliders the maximum amount of your Focus every turn, then you can keep the Bast token.

His thought doesn't seem right to me but I've been wrong before. Is there an official ruling from Kevin on this one, anywhere?

cheers and thanks!

You spend all your focus on the Bast token. Thus your sliders do not move if you want to keep the token; furthermore, if you have 0 focus, you can't "spend" any, so you automatically lose the Bast token.

This is similar to the wording on the Duke ally: discard Duke to restore all your sanity. You must be choosing to discard Duke for this purpose . If something else makes you discard Duke, you don't get his effect.

Hey Tibs, thanks for the reply. Absolutely love your scenarios btw.

So that's what I thought; was there ever an official FFG response to that out of curiosity? I don't see the need for one, but just curious for my game-mate's sake.

No official response on the matter, but I take it to be self-evident. The cost of keeping such a powerful token as Bast is that you can't use focus anymore: so you can't re-charge expendable weapons like the Brazier of Souls and expect to keep the Bast token. Kingsport introduces a ton of benefits that use all your focus to re-charge.

Another counter-example would be to note that a player could just use all focus to shift a single slider back and forth and back and forth, and keep the Bast token. If the intent was to force you to change your final slider positions, then only odd-focused investigators would necessarily see an effect.

Thanks for your appreciation!

That's a nice token to pair up with Addiction...

yep, good on all. Thanks gang!
