2016 Kotei season

By Monty Pillepalle, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Greetings fellow Samurai,

I would like to open a discussion about a possible community driven 2016 Kotei season.

I myself looked forward to the tournament season every year, not only for the great games, but also for the people and the travelling involved. I enjoyed the whole experience and official price support and story impact where actually not my biggest motivation. So why should we not enjoy the game next year, when this is actually the only thing that has been taken away?

The game still has one upcoming expansion that seems like it will shake up the meta quiet a bit (looking at the much needed open kill to end the supreme rule of stand fast). I would love to see the edition in action. I have already talked to the organizers of the french Koteis this year and they seem to be eager to join this endeavour. I would again organize the german one and I am reaching out to everyone I know in the communiuty to join in on the fun.

Here is my best case for next year: Kotei organizeres around the world would gather and plan the next season. If we manage to cooridnate and draw a decend number of players, it would not only be in the interesest of players, but also in the interest of FFG. I can only imagine that they would look favorable on any attempt to keep the game alive until 2017, so they can reap as big of a community as possible for their reboot. Maybe they could even be convinced to make the results of next year official in some way (by for example printing the winners names on card boarders or mentioning them in the rulebook, just some minor ideas). If the season would be a success we could even include a world championship with qualification from the kotei season. I know a few people here in germany who are interested in organising one ;) .

There are not only disadvantages here: We would for example not be forces to buy price support package. This would keep prices low. We could allow a few proxies to help with the availability of the game. The organizers could run a rules forum and even issue erratas on problems that could arrise in Evil portents. Maybe if the consensus is big enough, we could even fix some minor inconveniences in the game, like the colonial conscripts random farm hate, Victory through Deference versetaillity or the your true nature random item hate.

Of course, this is a thing we can only achive working together. I hope we can show FFG what a dedicated and great community they have bought with there game. This can only be good for their motivation not to disapoint us,

I hope you are with me on this,

Cheers,

Monty Pillepalle

Edit:

So far, people have shown interest to hold events in:

Poland

France

The UK

Germany

There's a lot of unorganized attempts at this on Facebook. Look for the L5R Unofficial Tournament group.

This sounds like a fine idea to me.

I would like Ohsuki Sensei errata'd into something usable.

Be ready for Szczyrk Kotei 2016. :)

If 90% of the people agree, sure. I however think that such specific changes would require an overhaul of many senseis for fairness reasons with unforseeable consequences, especially without a playtest team. I would rather not go there. I mentioned that part of the idea mainly to give us an ability to catch anything broken in evil portents and for some really random things like the farm/item hate on the cards i mentioned. Neither of these will have balance implications.

However, this is not the main point, I would be fine if we play everything as printed.

Be ready for Szczyrk Kotei 2016. :)

Thats nice to hear. I will mark you in the OP, so that people see the progress we make in locations where people would like to join us. I Encourage you and anyone else to spread the word. Ask everyone you know who organised a Kotei in the past if he is willing to join us.

Sheffield/Patriot Games have already been discussing hosting an event next year so there's that if you're UK based.

I just heard of some other attempts to build a 2016/17 season on the unoffical l5r tournament facebook site. And some seem to be way ahead in planning too. This is going to happen.

Tri-state gamers is thinking of a BobCon Kotei. Celestial Arc with 1 exception. That exception is Hida Yagimaki, either non-exp or exp must be in your deck.

Alot of us locally are figuring out what to do while the game is on a hiatus.

We would like to keep the game thriving.

The shop we play in would lose a bit of its sense without L5R as the shop is named after an L5R card. =)

We may try for an event as soon as people get settled in to the environment that we will implement during the gap.

The environment we plan so far is everything after Coils of Madness, not Coils itself, with the current ban list implemented as well.

Same rules as usual like that out of the box/can decks for example are legal as long as they are as they are when they came out of the box (learn to play sets etc)

Some members of the Design Team have banded around the idea of releasing some unofficial 'fan sets' in 2016 just to keep the community active, possibly set in things like Legend of the Burning Sands or Rokugan 2000, but it really depends on what FFG says is or is not okay to do.

Nothing official, since I can't speak for Robert, but it's very likely that the Malmö Kotei + annual BBQ party will occur in 2016, regardless of the state of the game. ;)

More information about it? I'm really curious, especially this LoBS themed expansion. Based on unreleased rethemed Onyx stuff?

Wow I would love to see these fan sets happen, especially the LBS setting. That was pretty much the coolest card game of all time.

It wouldn't be based on Onyx stuff, no, mostly because everything associated with that belongs to FFG now, and it wouldn't be proper or appropriate to do anything with that without their express prior approval. This would be more some things done by us in the capacity of fans who happen to have designed the game for years, rather than in any official capacity. Think of it sort of like the Continuing Committee for the Decipher Star Trek card game, more or less.

Really, we just like designing L5R cards, we enjoyed the mechanics of the game. FFG has stated that mechanically the new game will have no compatibility with the older ones, so there's some desire to see the mechanics of the L5R system preserved in some fashion.

Plus, I just really enjoyed LBS, and I know that R2K had a fairly large following, so that might be fun. Like I said, this was just something we were kicking around, also as a way to keep the player base engaged during this long break.

So if i read you correctly you have just started design these cards? I'd really enjoy LBS setting, played few LBS games years ago and i'm really eager to fly some carpets, knives fighting, fight for water and see (Soul of) Monkey Man! ;)

Rokugan 2000 looks too much abstract for me, but LBS setting, as parallel to L5R/Rokugan, is really good idea.

Could you tell us there's group of ex-L5R DT people who started their work? What's your plan then? Small (<50 card) expansion filled with higly playable cards, or maybe standard >150 one, with lot of fillers? New Stronghold/Faction or just "water/ashalan/djinn/whatever" Sensei to keep IvE+ system? Some new "water" mechanics like in LBS ("water" tokens on holdings, raids), return of old card types (celestials/regions), new keywords?

Gosh, i'm really excited.

Keep you work and inform us.

PS. Started small survey on Polish forum to see what people would like to see, LBS or R2K.

We've only kind of jokingly talked about it at this point, nothing too serious until we basically know a little more of the developing situation. Still, good to know there is interest if we decide to pursue this!
