Things that needed to be said.

By BlueAce, in X-Wing

OK so I've been a long time lurker and even long term player. I heavily lean towards competitive play as my mode of choice. All of that being said what is happening to this forum? It is just turning into a cesspool of negativity. We just had a thread locked where people were shaming each other over financial and life choices. Look at every thread where people try and shame others for what they play. Look at all the people telling others there play style is wrong, dumb, broken, no skill, no fun and so on and so on. Plus all of the whining that goes on. I can understand a rant or some grievances every now and then but for some of you guys its been happenening for 2+ years. Also stop believing that its your whining that is changing the game. If anyones whining will change anything it will be the playtesters over at the playtester forum. It's just getting to the point of ridiculousness lately. We can do so much better.

If you're a new player please don't think these forums are a general representation of the x wing community. There are some very vocal members who are in the minority of the x wing community.

Well said

So in other words - its like any other forum on the internet !

And I'm totally sure that scolding people and describing contrary opinions that you don't share as "whining" will fix the forum right up.

Seriously, I get where you're coming from (while not really agreeing with you), but boy oh boy is this ever part of the problem not part of the solution.

While I added to the anti-turret comments, I hoped I made reasonable discussions on it. I'm sure many will not agree with that thought.

I do think that the overall discussion on the forums has dropped in the past month or so, even before the latest releases. With the latest stuff coming out, there is so much negativity. Everyone is complaining about every angle of the game.

Personally, I think this is the best time to be playing the game. There are a ton of new ships coming out and I can't even afford what's come out now, let alone what's coming out in the next few months. I think the fat turret meta has been smashed, but not made them unplayable. There are a lot of options out there and I think the meta is wide open right now. Not only that, but Epic is a thing. I was going to play with my Raider with 3 of us and it turned into a large 6 person game by the end of it.

So many old ships are now viable, too! I can't wait to get more Tie FO's to play with Vessery.

I'm loving X-wing right now. My bank account and wife aren't. I just wish I had more time to play.

Oh, and...

The crying and cancer on this forum is F-ing pathetic.

If you want a more positive tone in the forum perhaps you ought to practice a bit of what you preach, y'know?

I can totally see how you're benefitting the community by whining and complaining about the community. Such a noble crusade "long time lurker" finally posting of how they're displeased with how the forums are right now. Puh-lease, welcome to the internet/any forum anywhere. People taking issue with game mechanics is what keeps discussion moving and the meta changing. If the game was perfect there would be no need for list building or strategy forums .

It's a small minority doing the complaining. We've been hit with about a year worth of change in the last couple months. Some people are going to have a real reaction to that. It'll die down when the chaos meta settled in. Time will fix it. Comments will not.

As far as my vernacular in real life I talk like a sailor. I'm not saying the forums tone has to be rainbows and girl scout cookies but why do we have to shame other players. Again I'm not saying disagreeing is shaming that's all fine. But saying that the casual players don't really matter because to them balance isn't important. Saying the competitive players are waac jerks. People saying oh you fly this list so clearly you aren't trying to have fun and just care about winning. People saying oh you're flying that we'll I guess you must enjoy easy mode and smearing ice cream on your face while rolling dice. I get that we all have preferences in what we fly and fly against. But I never would say anything to my opponents face nor would I say it with the anonymoty the Internet provides.

You can't expect to be taken seriously when you call for civility and respecting each other's opinions out of one side of your mouth while describing other people's conduct as "whining", "crying" and "pathetic" out of the other side.

You want the forum to have a more positive tone? Then be the change you want to see in the world. Don't just wag your finger at people who're being impolite in a slightly different manner to the way you're comfortable being impolite. Your "just trying to push an agenda" is other people's "impassioned debate", after all.

I put about twenty people on super block this week, so that you can not even see that they posted in a topic with the option to view it anyway.

The reason being this new hate and personal jabs crowd. I am not here to hurt cool people or have every topic clogged up with that negative element.

Constructive meta talk, pictures and videos related to STAR WARS, and good fun including buddy joking around is appropriate. These drive by attacks are not appropriate, and I have no time for it.

The thing is that saying anything that might be considered a call to good manners only agitates some of these new attack-complain critters.

From now on I am simply going to be as fun and friendly as I can be, and share cool ideas and pictures, and just block negative people who are not here for that kind of fun in our community.

:)

An improvement of the original post. By me.

Dudes, this game rocks be excellent to one another. Debate merits on all you want. Keep being awesome.

It is great to erase these people that you just don't like or that seem to want to chase you around on here... nope.

It was talk like a pirate day ... yesterday, two days ago?

So near enough and still legit.

As someone involved with the mentioned locked thread I have to say that I came of way more aggresive than I wanted to and it was not my intention to shame anyone, but lets not dwell on that.

While I didn't notice a lot of increased negativity I also don't read all the threads. I think it is a case of just controversial stuff happening with the release of the new damage deck and people realizing the impact TLT truly has on the meta and this being part of the internet people not being considerate while discussing. I think this is one of the major problems in any online community, that a lot of empathy gets lost. I try to avoid that and to put myself into the shoes of someone, even if I disagree with him. If I disagree with someone that does not mean that I don't like them or think their opinion is somehow less valid than mine. I know I am not all knowing, that much I know.

Joe, I am scared, am I on your ignore list? Please don't, I really appreciate your enthusiasm!

Maybe I'm old, but...why do people care about people complaining on the internet?

Because some people care about community. Some kinds of complaining generate a vitriol that is felt throughout.

I agree with the OP.

I LOVE This... even have it in a Star Wars playlist for...

People vent on the internet. I don't see the big issue there. Give people some degree of anonymity and a virtual soapbox, and of course we're going to rant a bit. And frankly, if people are venting here, maybe they're less toxic when actually playing.

When it turns to mudslinging or real vitriol, that is a problem, but that's for the moderators to deal with. If it bugs you and you want to do more than just press the report button, you've got a couple of options. You can sink to or near to their level (And potentially get banned), You can ignore it and hope the vocal minority when people stop feeding the fire, or you can try to be positive and respectful to set an example. Your choice, really.

As to why we are seeing all the frantic discussion of late, well, people have invested a lot of time and money into their little plastic starships here. We care about that, because it represents an investment. When we feel said investment is threatened, we get upset. Upset people are not known for incredible civility. The best thing you can do is step back, take a deep breath, and slowly repeat the mantra, "They're just toy starships. It's just a game. They're just toy starships. It's just a game." Does that mean you can't take them seriously? Absolutely not! This game is a big part of people's life- It's one of my biggest social outlets and where I've made friends, and I can't be the only somewhat shy person this is the case for. That's something to take seriously. But the "Action Figures and Toy Soldiers" mantra has worked for calming down frothing 40k players, I imagine something similar can work for us.
