Canon

By Chucknuckle, in Star Wars: Armada

At the moment, it is a grey area of the new Canon. Unless, or until a guideline is established by LFL, it can be assumed to be potentially Canon.

While anything from Legends can be "canonised" (by including it in a newcanon novel or reference book or video game) - I'd say that FFG isn't in the "canonisation business" - Wookieepedians seem to agree - it currently places FFG stuff under the Legends banner.

So - until, say, the Scurrg, or the MC30c, or the Assault Frigate Mark 2 appear elsewhere, their appearance in Armada doesn't mean anything for "canonverse designs" - at least at the moment.

Still fun to see them though.

In the novel Lost Stars there's a reference to a "20 gun raider".

Is this referring to THE Raider, or something else?

I haven't read it but I suspect it means a commerce raiding ship or pirate ship with 20 guns rather then a Raider class ship with 20 guns. 20 guns is a very heavy armament for a ship its size and while not unprecedented in setting the fact it was meant as a counterpart to the CR90 would more likely put it somewhere in the 6 to 12 gun range IMO

FFG has already stated that they have no intention of making the PT/TCW era ships. That eliminates alot of Canon there. If the intention is to expand the game, we will see more EU ships.

I like quite a bit of the EU, but it has about the same crap to cool ratio as the PT, just easier to not read and ignore.

You make me sad.

I would be thrilled to have the two factions from the Clone Wars series.

Playing the CIS in particular might be fun, since their navy is made up of vessels from many diffrent species without a unifying design philosophy.

They are not going to. Disney is separating themselves from that era

Yea. That's why it makes me sad.

Honest question. Why do you believe that FFG is exempt from the current canon guidelines put forward by Disney?

Mostly because they're more "Star Wars setting" than "Star Wars fiction".

X-Wing Miniatures had been going since before the announcement - they can't go back and slap a Legends banner on all the old boxes - but that doesn't mean that any of the EU pilots are canon now.

Same applies to Armada - it includes Howlrunner, Tycho, Rhymer, etc - because X-Wing Miniatures did - but that doesn't mean that those are "canon once they appear in Armada".

I don't think they are going back and slapping "Legends" on any of the old books either.

Actually, they are.

New Reprints of Zahn's "Last Command" Trilogy have the "Legends" stamping on them.

Armada is a new line. It was still in development when the Ledgends concept was introduced. It seems reasonable that the banner could have been included so people wouldn't have to make assumptions.

Do you have a link for this? The only reference I could find was in regards to FFG SW RPGs which predate the new canon cut off anyway. Also it was stated as wookiepidia's opinion, not LFL. Armada is a different case since the game was released entirely under the new canon dates and under scrutiny of Disney. Also I'm not implying that anything FFG does will re-canonize anything about Howlrunner other than the existence of a pilot with that cal sign.

I'm sure you're right. But I have hope.

It's definitely referencing an Imperial ship:

If she could convince Grand Moff Randd to split up the fleet, to attack the rebel star cruisers from multiple directions, maybe even to send one of the twenty-gun raiders into the atmosphere to support the TIE fighters battling near the planet's surface - at the very least they'd shake the rebels up.

From the FFG article (and we know Lucasfilm was involved in the design):

The Raider is a starship made specifically for anti-fighter warfare. Its six dual heavy laser cannons proved more accurate against snubfighters than the turbolaser batteries of its Star Destroyer cousins, and the disruptive effects of its ion cannon emplacements, along with the efficiency of its localized command, make it a powerful addition to small strike forces.

Six dual heavy lasers is 12 guns, so if there are 8 Ion cannons...

Just a fool's hope :)

(NB - I'm not advocating for this, just thought it was interesting. And I'd LOVE to see one on the big screen one day)

My Assault Frigate has a Disney logo on the bottom of the box, right next to the ffg logo and the CE.

That makes it 100% cannon for me, and I am just waiting for it to appear in novelization format. If it doesn't, then over the summer, I might write some persuasive letters to Disney and authors of the new star wars books asking "what gives?".

Hmm, Star Wars rebels season 2... Might start watching it for maybe a glimpse of new ships and old ships like the Glad and Assault Frigate.

Wait. Maybe not. After giraffe necked star destroyers, I don't wanna know what this thing could look like.

For me it's a matter of what looks like star wars (to me) and what doesn't. The obvious contenders are the ones from the OT. Then include the VSD since it's an almost identical clone of the ISD, just a bit smaller. Then I'm happy to include the MC30 and Raider since the Raider again keeps that distinct Star Deatroyer wedge and the MC30 was at least built from original concept sketches. The game just feels more like Star Wars to me when the ships on the table are (mostly) the same ships I've seen on the screen.

As for FFG and canon...

I really don't know. I mean, obviously all the ships released BEFORE the new canon era (NCE) aren't canon. But are things like the Kirhaxz or the K Wing canon now because FFG has released them?

I don't think so. I think FFG probably got a pass because of the development costs and production lead times.

I thought the Gladiator was canon since it had appeared in a couple of episodes of the Star Wars: Droids cartoon series

Droids is not considered "Canon" anymore, as far as I can tell.

I still like the fact that this split between canon and legends occurred on my 25th birthday.

I would love for the Raider-class to be canonized but the way the term raider is used in the book looks to me like it is a description of the ship's mission or activities rather then the name of its class.

Also the way guns are counted in Star Wars 6 Dual Heavy Lasers would be counted as 6 guns not 12. Look at the Falcon as an example she doesn't have 8 guns because of the 4 lasers in each of her turrets she has 2 Quadlasers. plus your 12 and 8 equals 20 loadout leaves no room for the turbolasers that were mentioned in one of the articles.

Buy only one copy of each EU expansion and canon ships in multiples because some canon cards are only available in non-canon expansion packs.

This way, you'll have a lot of variety while still ensuring your fleet has the classic Star Wars look.

Raider looks pretty hilariious for me. Gladiator looks much better.
