SLAM

By Wayne Argabright, in X-Wing Rules Questions

does the SLAM move have to be on the dial? If I move my K wing 3 forward and then SLAM can I do a Hard 3 turn? even though that's NOT available on the dial?

To SLAM, choose and execute a maneuver on the ship’s dial. The chosen maneuver must be the same speed as the maneuver that ship executed this round. Then assign that ship a weapons disabled token.

Yes, it must be from the dial. It's on the reference card, isn't it?

its worded kind of funky and could go ether way...

I respectfully disagree.

Seriously? I don't see how.

"To SLAM, choose and execute a maneuver on the ship’s dial."

Seems pretty clear cut to me. Says "on the ship's dial", not another ship's dial, not any maneuver of your choice, it's "on the ship's DIAL".

"To SLAM, choose and execute a maneuver on the ship’s dial." The chosen maneuver must be the same speed as the maneuver that ship executed this round. Then assign that ship a weapons disabled token. this is the wording I am talking about.... I guess I was thinking the maneuver part was the "Maneuver" part and the SLAM part was the "SLAM" part... although I personally did not think It made sense to be able to preform a maneuver not on ones dial.. now READ what the quoted text says.. "Chose and execute a maneuver on the ships dial" say I chose a 3 forward.. Then "The chosen maneuver must be the same speed as the maneuver that the ship executed this round" doesn't say anything about being on the dial unless they consider the entire move and SLAM to be one movement. but from the FAQ "Performing a SLAM counts as executing a maneuver." (not THE maneuver) is it the SAME maneuver or another maneuver? So in short is a normal move + SLAM one big maneuver or is it two separate maneuvers? But yeah I don't think it makes sense to be able to preform a maneuver that's not on the dial. however and I am probably reading to much into it; it looks like your could interpret it so that you could do that?? But OTOH the K wing doesn't have a K turn on the dial either. So should I be able to do one of those as my SLAM.. Nope.. so yeah just disregard my rambling...

Ah, I see now. You were reading the "choose and execute a maneuver on the ship's dial" part as referring to the regular maneuver you perform during the Activation phase, before you get to the Perform Action step where you're doing the SLAM. It's not. Compare the rules for boost and barrel roll, neither of which reference your regular maneuver at all. That first sentence is referring to the SLAM movement. In fact, without it, there would be nothing to move you during a SLAM at all.

Not at all. The question is "Can you execute maneuvers not on the ship's dial?" The card says "Choose and execute a maneuver on the ship's dial." I'm not sure how the rules card could make the answer clearer.

Yeah, OK, I'll ignore the ramblings. :) I see where you're coming from now. But you've got to look at the slightly bigger picture to get a fuller understanding. Before you even get to the SLAM, you've got to execute your maneuver for the round, THEN you're doing your SLAM action, which just happens to involve another maneuver. Not much different from Daredevil really. You just don't get the stress.

So, everything on the reference card is referring to the action part except where it says "The chosen maneuver (for the SLAM) must be the same speed as the maneuver that the ship executed this round". And of course it's chosen from only what the K-wing can do, which is dictated by it's dial.
