Aritsts Wanted!

I get paid to GM for kids.

Doesn't mean I won't GM for free for my friends.

I think you need to drop the "I have to get paid for every single doodle I make" attitude, because it's coming off as a bit elitist. (to me, anyway)

There's nothing wrong with using your skills, talents and training to do something for free as a hobby.

I am trained as a car metal shaper, and I could (although I don't currently work with it) get paid to not only fix cars, but actually build custom cars and bikes.

That doesn't mean I won't help my friends out if they happen to have a cool idea for their car. And I'll do it for free (provided they pay for the materials, of course)

I built a metal rose for a friend because he liked the first one I made for myself. Didn't charge him for that either.

Charging for every single piece of material you make, comes off as a bit douchy, if you ask me.

Now, if someone you don't know is asking you to draw portraits of their characters?

Sure, ask them for a small payment.

If someone asks you if you want to join them in a fan made, free, project?

Ask them what it's about and if it sounds interesting, then do it for your own pleasure.

If you don't like them, just decline with a friendly "That's not really something I'm interested in, but good luck with your project".

Simple as that.

I practice and draw every single day. I went to uni for 4 years and worked my ass off for my bachelor`s degree. Believe me, most of my drawings are not paid for.

I get your comparison, I do, and I see your point! The thing is that artists get asked to work for free all the time. In none of my other jobs has that happened.

"Can you just draw this for me?", "can you just help me out with this project?", "can you work for exposure?"

Teachers told us at school, experienced artists tell me, "never work for free, it is ruining this business". Try to understand that this is a serious thing within the artist community.

I know this might be the wrong platform for this discussion, but know that this isn`t about being elitist, this is about protecting the profession and my line of work.

I do draw art for my friends as gifts and for fun or for our gaming group. But if someone has a project in mind or something specific,

that is some hours doing research, gathering references, and then sketching lots of thumbnails for ideas and composition, sketching out the one I am saticefied with

and then drawing the final piece. I love what I do, but I can`t afford to do it for free.

I have already said I am curious about what this project is and I have also said it`s ok to ask for volenteers.

The only reason I keep posting these posts is because some comments make me feel like I need to defend artists and their right to get paid for doing teir craft, their job.

I will not ask for a small payment to do my job. Hope you understand.

I have also said good luck more than once, but then this attitude and mindset keeps popping up again

I might sound more stern(or even angry?) than I am. I`m actually quite chill and relaxed over here, but I feel the need to explain how it is. Peace :)

I wish the OP lots of luck and I`m real curious to find out more about what this project is all about.

If it sounds awesome and interesting, I might even be able to hold off some time to contribute if I can make the time to do so.

Op, keep asking for help an volenteers, contributers or whatever! I`m not attacking any of that, just explaing... And hey, we`re keeping the thread going ;)

I'm leaving public dissemination of details of the project to Rusak.

Its not a big project by any means, and it would probably be a "Thats useful" or "Never gonna use that" type of response to it.

All I needed to pretty up the pages were some small bits of flavour art, to break up what is currently a dozen+ pages of just bulk text.

By all means, if you are interested in potentially contributing, PM Rusak (hes dealing with all that side of stuff, as I am currently unable to cope with it myself for various reasons).

Sure... And writers get asked all the time as well. I do IT and I get asked all the time for computer help. The problem is no one is saying artists shouldn't get paid for their work.

They`re not ? That`s awesome:D.. In my mind, writers are artists too, so yea. I had a friend who works in IT over to look at my pc the other day and fix it, it didn`t work, but I paid him $50 for time and effort spent, I would feel like a ****** if I didn`t, at least if I expected him to do his job for free.

Great if noone is saying artists shouldn`t get paid for their work. I must have gotten the wrong impression from a couple of comments(it happens! Not being sarcastic).

I really only tried to explain why this might be a tender issue for artists(including writers). I tried to "enlighten" and sometimes defend, not to attack anyone.

And for some reason some people seemed to get upset when I wrote why I, me personally, couldn`t work for free on this.

Asking for volunteers is perfectly alright now.

Saying no because you don't want to volunteer is fine.

Saying yes because you do want to volunteer is fine here.

Explaining why you answered yes or no is also fine here now.

Everything is perfectly alright now. We're fine. We're all fine here now... Thank you. How are you?

Oh, you wouldn't believe how many people ask if I can fix a dent in their car for free when they find out that I'm trained to do stuff like that.

However, like I said, it's different when it comes to a fan project for a hobby I have.

Hell, if someone asked me if I wanted to join in on making a working, driveable, version of lukes landspeeder, I would probably do that for free. (well, unless they're planning on selling it or something)

Because A: it's my hobby, B: I like the idea and C: It's for non profit.

I'm glad you're not as hard-ass as you came off, but that's just the problem.

You came off as very defensive and kinda hostile.

Yes, you should definately be paid for your talents.

But you should also not be afraid to pitch in for free if it's a free project and something that's your own hobby.
