Facedown Missile cards, nice option

By Hexdot, in X-Wing

Yesterday a combined salvo from Han and flight of 3 A Prototipes wiped me out. Sometimes we play with certain cards facedown. Yesterday Ordinance and Mines. I am a big Proton Rockets fan, and I was 100% sure they were carrying this little creatures. But not. 4 Attack Missiles, 3 hits. Goodbye to Howlrunner, 3 Academy and one Saber.

20 pts in one salvo...(250 pts melee), but.wuouhhhh...and firing range 2-3.

Try to play this way if your opponent is a "legal" player. Little fix...

You mean Assault Missiles?

This house rule has been thrown around with a fair bit of regularity. I like the fluff of the idea, but it's hard to verify what's actually on the table in a tournament setting (i.e.: is your opponent's list actually legal) when you can't see it.

TOs check the legality of all lists before tournaments start, don't they?

Yes, Assault. A simple variant.

Speaking personally, I'm going to add up the points on the rest of your list and say to myself, "Okay, he's got 20 points' worth of ordnance, with each ship able to carry just one missile, so they all have Assault or Homing Missiles." Unless all upgrades are hidden, and I can't even see the card backs, it's not going to work.

...also, I find a lot of the value in Proton Rockets isn't in the actual damage they do (although that's nice if it happens, of course). It's in area denial, and making your opponent think hard about how to stay out of Range 1 of the missile-carrying ship. That aspect is completely lost if my face-down card could be any missile: there's nothing my opponent can do to mitigate the risks until he or she knows more, so he or she won't do anything different.

yeah always thought that should be the case anyway. I mean how would the enemy know what munitions or upgrades you have until you expend them.. makes ships that can carry bombs even more problematic. hmm is it going to drop a bomb on me or is it loaded with Cluster Missiles instead??? yeah ALL cards should be face down until used.. sounds like a neat variant to try..
