The Spanish National, or How Not to Run a Tournament

By darthlurker, in X-Wing

Thanks for the clarification ;)

I have my personal and private opinion too, but ofc, I will not, and I should not share it as I will not be impartial. R5 has nothing to do with it, and as I have if R5 does not want to share his opinion, is completely free, and we all have to respect that, let's do not involucrate third parties who are comeplety out of this, I ask you to please do not include R5 in all this.

@Azrapse, please ask anybody here, including the people who is uploading pics, whatever, from any region of Spain, the time was not a problem in any moment. I am absolutely open to criticism and to learn from mistakes, but always when they are true.

What you are saying ,trust me, it is not true and people who has attended has confirmed it here so far.

Please, do not search for splitting hairs. I am being honest when I am saying there was not time issues or complaints at all. And excuse my tone in the first post, it did not sound friendly, sorry about it.

With all this said, I will leave it here, as I do not have nothing more to add from the Ref Team.

Excuse me, but how much was the entrance fee at the tournament?

Gen con was no where near as bad as that

Sad to hear that several nationals had so many issues.

My experience was quite the opposite, the Australian Nationals was run incredibly smoothly with no issues at all that I could see. The TO, Brad, ran an amazing event with lots of bonus prize support, lots of space for players (ncluding a lounge where people could relax and watch the live stream of the featured game once they'd finished their matches), and plenty of chairs.

Agree totally. Brad sets the standard for tournaments in Australia across any of the different games I've played. Great venue, great organisation and great prize support.

I can't wait for next year when the bar will be open!

A few images of the event will clarify the point of view about the mats....

FLAT SURFACE.....

YOU CAN DEPLOY YOUR SHIPS IN THE EDGE (i'm pretty sure they will not fall)....

PLENTY OF SPACE FOR THE CARDS, TOKENS, RANGE RULERS AND MANEUVER TEMPLATES....

Accept the fact that the this tournament wasn't the great success that most of players were expecting....
Accept the critics, it will allow EDGE to do it better next time, and don't try to take away the responsibility of this nonsense tournament, and try to improve and correct it for the next year.
But... EDGE Spain has to accept their responsibility for this mess.

This here is IMO total bull as this is fixed by one simple thing. Going down to your local Lowe's, or whatever it is in Spain, and buying what is a 4$ US sheet of 4x8 plywood. 150 players at 2 per sheet is 75 sheets which is a total of 300$ to fix a space issue on tables. How much was it to enter this tournament? if it was anything more than 20$ then they could have EASILY covered this issue.

25€ (27,9$ with the current Exchange), same for Imperial Assault.

The most important and expensive X-Wing tournament in Spain and the sensation was of assisting to an overcrowded store championship.

Many stores offered to help with plywood painted playmats, if only for laying the official ones on top.

The organization rejected such help.

I'll second that. one of the best attendances prizes we all got was a Empire/Rebellion coin with the store name on it THEE D6 :P (if you got one you know the joke)

well i will comment on regional's i attended in the UK i went to 3,one in Milton Keynes, one in aldershot and one in bangor northern island.all had play mat's or boards of the correct size to play on,all had chairs, one was a tad warm, pairings was posted up well at all events, price's charges for the events wan't too much and one of the venues had hired a hotel conference room they also had lots of extra prize support as well.and the nationals we had around 120 places may of been a few more again was well organized the was play mats for all tables with room to place down the cards, the was chairs and the was extra prizes as well.only concern was the heat as the was around 400-500 people in the marquee.playing games for various events.

i must say i feel all of these events where well run and must complement all of the people involved.and again the Community of players at each event was also a fine group of people.

So if your where replying to me, which I have a feeling you where, this means that the tournament brought in roughly 4500 US Dollars, I rounded up to 30 for ease of calculation. Yet they couldnt, or wouldnt, spring for 300$ worth of plywood. Yeah while Im not in Europe to play at any of these Nationals if the Spain one was my only one I could attend Id have to pass as thats just unacceptable.
