Painted some fighters

By mazz0, in Star Wars: Armada

I wish I was one of those people who think painting is half the fun, or that I didn't care about them looking good. This is such a faff, and I've done the easiest ones first! Next up, about four hundred million X-Wings and twice that number of TIEs, and they're both the fiddliest and the least interesting! :(

Anyway, the ones I've done so far:

I love the negative space you created in the Y wings. Well done.

Thanks :) They're the ones I'm happiest, which is a worry since they're the ones I did first! I can only imagine how bad the Imperial stuff will look if that trend continues!

Sorry I don't have a favourite :(

Because they're all great! :) Well done.

Aww, thanks dude! :)

For all the talk about how much you don't like painting, they certainly turned out great!:)

I suck at painting... But when I do sit down with my sharpies, it's kind of therapeutic. Until I mess up enough and walk away in frustration.

You've nothing to be modest about, these look great.

I hate you, just so, so much. Those fighters look amazing, and now I'm left feeling totally inadequate. Thanks.

Well done man, those fighters look awesome.

Wow, thanks guys :)

I did mention I like aesthetics, and painting squadrons is one of those things :P Bloody great work, mate! It's nice clean brush control, good individuality, and a lot of really nice combinations I haven't seen or haven't seen much.

To that end, I really like the lilac A-wings and the orange B-wings. They really aren't something I see a lot of but they are striking (why aren't they used more? They do look great). The canopy reflection is pretty smooth on the A's and B's, so well done. I'm prevented on saying too much about Y-wings because I like them too much and I'd blather on quite a bit :P

You said Y-wings were the easiest, but were any particularly enjoyable to work on?

That said, oh lawdy', best of luck on those X-wings. I hate the friggen' little baggers. They were by far the most frustrating squadron to clean then paint for me. You've done great, Mazz0, so I've got faith you're going to nail the TIE squadrons :) Hope you put those up for us when you get 'em done. All the best!

:P

I've already got the X-Wings sprayed in my base colour and I've blacked the canaries, so it's just the coloured blocks then washes that need doing. Maybe I'll make a selection of little templates/stencils to make it easier. With so many ships I'll have to reuse a few block shapes anyway.

As for the TIEs, I've tried spraying them grey-blue then painting the black bits on, and the other way around, can't get a remotely neat job either way. Gonna have to use a lot of tape for those I think.

Edit: I'm going to leave the phrase "blacked the canaries" in there cos it totally sounds like it should be a thing!

goddamnit

I would pay to have my B-wings look that cool :(

It would have to be a lot, I really don't much like painting :P
I really like the orange ones. I just picked that colour almost at random when Rebel Aces came out for X-Wing and I wanted rid of the Daggar Squadron paint scheme, which I can't stand it (even though for Armada I've implemented that scheme myself! How contrary!), so I figured I'd copy it over to my Armada B-Wings. The rest are colour schemes from the X-Wing B-Wing cards.
The X-Wing orange B-Wings I was copying look like this:

I dunno what it is, I just think that colour looks great on them!

orange is great because it shows the enemy they're not even the least bit afraid of being spotted against the black of space :P

Those B-wings look spiffin! I've never been a big fan of orange but I'm slowly coming 'round, and these do help further that cause.

I know what you mean about the confined shapes for the fighters. I found the A-wings decent as well because they weren't too heavily contoured. Masking tape, yep, it works, as does an artist pen for artificial black lines. As far as similar experience go, I had to paint all the grey on the Ties, then carefully do the black afterwards.

I do ever so love painting, but if you can get transfers or make some reusable masks (I've seen it done here before for the TIEs) that's going to look consistently sharp and crisp.

I've got to figure out how to add 'blacken the canaries' in my lexicon. It's superb :P

I'll second that!

Wow those look great! They definately make it to my top 3 list (I'm not sure where though :) ).

the "Y" has always been my fav....and you mastered the art of the paint....sehr gut!

Those A and Y wing livery variation... Nicely done. Don' think I have the patience for it.

I was thinking of using fine tip sharpies to paint my ships. Any tips?

They're pretty easy to work with and how all of my work is done. And can be 'fixed' with a dry erase marker. Just cover the sharpie mark with dry erase marker and wipe off if you make a mistake. I've only got the 12 pack of the ultra fines, but the larger packs I've seen would help provide more 'pop' or feelings of repetitive color schemes. Definitely consider using hot water to un-bend the really warped items and keeping a sharp knife for trimming any leftover molding. It helps make them look better finished and helps with the painting.

No kidding about the mould lines. I trimmed off about a million and still have a billion left that didn't become obvious until after I'd painted them! Same with the IA figures.

Nicely done
