In his defense this forum really isnt hostile and while some of us have been jerks most of these anti core set have come off as ranty and self centered especially as the conversation has worn on. Every time something exciting gets released in an expensive pack we tend to hear about how FFG is "gouging" the customer and is somehow "bad" or "immoral" for running their business and making decisions in a way that most positively affects their bottom line. Best example of this was the battle over weather or not the X1 should have come with the Raider. The Pro side stated several reasons why it was a good idea (boost epic sales primarily plus sell more TIE/adv models) and how people would be able to find copies on the secondary market (which you still can easily...I checked yesterday as I plan of offload one or two copies myself). The con side pretty much came down to "I dont want to buy an epic ship cause I dont play epic but I should get this anyway" and after the secondary market we got the predictable high horse "moral answer" of "Well I want to support FFG or my FLGS or whomever I can without buying an epic ship." I still hear people complain about 3PO and how he was released (though I dont think they realized just how powerful that card was when they released it.)Threads with this attitude really don't help you know. Like, not everyone of us have that much disposable cash to spend on this game, so this whole elitist attitude where people who have concerns about certain things are ruining the game and such is likely just going to drive people away. This forum can be quite hostile and that's not helping your hobby, which really conflicts with the attitude of "just wanting people to play the game".
And yes, the damage deck isn't mandatory, I know, but it's an update to a core component, which isn't really the same as an upgrade card for an individual ship.
@Joe; I haven't really seen much hate coming from the people not wanting to buy a coreset for the damage deck, I've seen plenty of hostility and arrogance coming from people on the other side as well. For someone who claims to be all about enjoying the game you sure can be a condescending jerk.
I know I see the people who post many of these "whiner" threads as overly entitled consumers who cant put themselves in anybodys position but their own. They come onto these forums to voice their side but never seem to make a convincing argument. It always comes down to "I am not getting EXACTLY what I want so you all get to hear me cry about it." And then they get all defensive when those of us who disagree start coming at them with the same type of attitude that they themselves initiated. The way one should come at these types of arguments is as Hobo did. He was calm, rational, and his language doesnt scream "I am entitled!" the way so many of these other threads do. Hell if you come to the forum and tackle to problem as he did you might very well find someone who might help you and sell/give you a deck or whatever you are looking for. Most of us are pretty cool here...but you get what you give.
If you are newer here dont worry...this time will pass and this forum will be back to its jolly self soon enough. So dont go anywhere the storm will pass.
YUP... in my little world grown-ass-men can take care of themselves thus spending a little $$$ on toys that add to our happy-joy is not some traumatic experience for us.
But we might be considered elitist condescending jerks if we dare to spend $100 a month or so...
Joe mate it's not spending your money that makes you an elitist condescending jerk! It's the fact that you belittle others with less disposable income, that makes you appear a jerk.
Kinda been a rough week or so here. I do not like seeing all of this hate aimed at FFG. You seem like a cool guy so do not take my post personally Brah.
It's cool man we all get worked up about games we love.
According to what I've been reading, there is some of you griping about being told you will eventually have to buy the new core set. This is because FFG has said, starting in January '16, you will need the new damage deck for FFG sanctioned events. Seems you think buying the core just for the deck is a waste of money on your part or a money grab on FFG's part.
So the question(s) I have that I would seriously like those of you in that crowd to answer:
How many YTs or Firesprays or B-wings or Interceptors or Aggressors or Z-95s etc...do you own? How many bought a CR-90, possibly just for 3PO? How many have bought 3rd party templates/tokens?
Hopefully this will shed light on how nonsensical your griping is when put next to the fact you bought double YTs and Aggressors or have a RG Interceptor list that where you got 4 red RG Interceptors from buying 4 Aces boxes with all 4 sporting ATs from 2 Starvipers you don't use or have 3PO on that double Facon list.
i see what your up to here and I agree and approve... nice post.
For me there is no issue what so ever because I love STAR WARS and The Glory of The FFG STAR WARS Products is the best ever made on Earth.
I WILL own them and love them all foreseers.
I do not care about tournament gypsies yarbeling about spending a little $30 to maintain their utterly ridiculous PROFESSIONAL GAMER HERO STATUSES.
Yet for all of the hate yap they have spat this last week or so, these Schmucks will still buy the thing for $50 because they got to keep their hole in the sad wall strip mall crap FLGS shacks open... they wanna do their part!
I ain't here to replace 40k... dats been dead for like fifteen years now.
I am here for STAR WARS!
Oh the self righteousness and moral superiority you have.
I guess it's a good thing FFG wants to exclude those like myself, we might introduce you and your ilk to a game of lock-sock-larper :-o lol This geek can only take so much from rectal sphincters.

I got 6 Tantives just for c3po. I like to run multiple c3po in a squad just or have people tell me I cant..because I am cool like that. As for the new damage deck I got 7 of the new core sets and have sold the decks of 5 of them for 18 to 23 bucks each on ebay... no no really it's half time and I am just killing time...
Sad fact about mini's hobbies is that the more disposable income you have less disposable time to play. You might start out a pimple faced Rook just buying stuff piecemeal just to get your list, but you're playing the game every minute you're not in class or dumping steamed milk in espresso. Later, you'll be buying an epic and a few packs to top you off for free shipping but will only be playing on weekends since a weekday job and commute has you wiped out when you get home. Fast forward ten years and you'll be buying everything from each wave with multiples of the ones you really want but will struggle to keep them out of the reach of the rugrats while desperately trying to keep your pals from flaking on the quarterly game meetup.
The truly wealthy are the players with the time (and the friends) to play as much as they want.

This is so true you just described my life.
I'll look out for someone with a spare I guess.
I'm seriously considering buying 5 or 6 core sets, splitting them into the various components and selling them on eBay.
Of course I'll no doubt get flamed for 'profiteering' by the people who refuse to buy a new core set
I give you kudos for the entrepreneurial spirit and by no means begrudge you on that. You would be performing a service some desire or need. But remember FFG's track record on production and stocking problems and distributors doing allotments.
If you get them from a big box store I don't see anyone having much of an issue since that's a whole separate trade channel dealing in a whole other scale, but getting them from the hobby trade channel you very well could be denying someone going to a lgs a chance of even getting one anytime soon. Lgs are the lynchpin for any game that wants to build a player base and you can't do that if they can't have stock for prospective recruits to buy because established players take it all just to be competitive. The lgs may get a one time influx of cash for 6 staters, or they may get 6 players that then buy 10 ships over time and become a regular customer.
So please consider your options and what effect they each may have.
As a new player I find your attitude elitist and insulting. I have been playing for about 6 weeks and started on a bit of a whim, as a result I was unaware that a new core set was incoming (personally as an OT fan I'm less than interested in the ships from the new core anyway). I bought 2 Cores and vader and a Y as well as most wanted, recently I added wave 7 minus the conjoined bomber and the raider. Having spent recent months hobby budget on core sets already I'm incredibly reluctant to shell out for another.
I enjoy playing competitively but I also like to play with friends who use my ships, in order to continue competitive play I will have to stop acquiring ships that I want in my collection that will see actual play in order to acquire a pretty box a damage deck and a handful of upgrade cards. The rest of the contents might as well be space dust for all the use they are to me. What possible harm could be caused by FFG selling a damage deck separately to go alongside the dice packs they already sell?
Name one competitive game of this nature that doesn't update rule sets/core sets/models?
Part of being a competitive gamer is keeping up to date with these things, as is entry fees, travel expenses etc.
Why not buy the box and eBay everything you don't need?

Good layout of how many of us live I reckon. I have ran RPG's for thirty years since I was a kid in fact. That is why I prefer to play at home running cool solo scenarios and occasionally game with a friend.
It is hard to get out and find good people to play games with. The tiny FLGS in my area is a scum hole at the back of an ancient strip mall which is full of punk rock brats that hate their parents. These white trash card players and gw thugs ain't my kind of peeps (and NO I am not saying that all magic & 40k people are trash... but in my area they are).
Hel-Nah I'll have me a gay 'ole time right here in my nice apartment thanks. Shucks I can just set up a nice display and have fun... kinda like a BIG Kid playing with me wonderful toys!

Look at this other ridiculous business practice! This is much less ridiculous than that!
Come on. I shouldn't feel compelled to buy a new starter set if I don't want it.
I should add that I DO plan to get the new starter because I like the new ships and upgrades, but I have no plans to ever play in an official FFG event and already have two perfectly serviceable damage decks. The new one will just go in a box with my other 'spare' damage deck.
But let's not pretend that FFG is being totally reasonable here. While they often package desirable upgrades with (IMO) less desirable ships to boost sales, and refuse to release card-only packs in case they hurt the sales of those ships, this is the first time they've released something and then told people they literally NEED to buy it to participate in their events. Yes, it's relatively cheap and yes, players have probably spent far more on other items, but that's not the point. It takes away a players choices. Want to play at a tournament? Then you need to buy this. End of story.
I can see why players are upset about that, even though it doesn't effect me personally.
I bought 2 TFU core sets for the extra ships, dice and damage decks. I like having the spare damage deck for replacing missing cards or to loan out if someone needs to borrow it for a tourney. I do believe that we'll see FFG have a damage deck blister pack up for sale before the deadline where it has to be used.

That would seriously cut into the sales of their starter set. I don't think they'll do it.
Why poke people about it? Let them whine, they can either buy in or go home. Debating whether it is okay for someone to feel a certain way about something is beyond pointless.

Hmm support trump you must, around the country a wall build.
I always wonder why people DONT want the new starter set. The ships are really great to play and look great. It also gives us all a chance to play with JUST a starter kit again, reminding us why we got into this game in the first place.
It's also a great value. Getting 3 ships for $40 is great. Getting it for $30 online is an even better deal.

The FO TIEs don't match all the rest of my TIEs.

Because the tie fo is redundant it does nothing other ships can't in the imperial navy and I have no need of them.
The t-70 is fine but as rebels are not my main faction I've got no pressing need for it.
So right off the ships are irrelevant.
I already own the templates so they'll be wasted.
The only thing I'd use would be the damage deck and I don't think that's worth £27.
Quite a few imp players don't care about the fo you know it's far less impressive than the new x-wing.
And honestly just playing the core was boring after a few games once I learnt how to fly ties I never lost because my friend couldn't get a shot.

When your done being a hurt imp player, tell us how many TIE fighter's and Interceptors you own. Who is being nonsensical now? Besides you can proxy cards either by printing or off of sites like Ebay.
Also why would I buy into the new fighter's when all they have done is fly in formation (T-70s) and shoot (and miss) the falcon? (TIE/FO's)
The Tie FO is actually a way more impressive ship than stats show. The native TL brings the ship into a new play style that the normal Tie Fighter was missing. The 2 Bank K Turn feels really good to use and have on a cheap 2 dice ship that wants range 1 for better offense. Shield + TL + Improved dial for 3 pts means the Tie FO is very cost efficient.
After playing with it, I found it to be far more impressive than I had first imagined in "theory", and I am glad I bought the new starter kit for that reason alone. (I wish I had felt that way when running things like the Defender or Starviper for the first time, which only felt underwhelming).
Also, the new damage deck is FUN, and worth having. The new crits are way more fair across the board, and a couple are more powerful, meaning crits have more impact on the game. Why would you NOT want that?
Basically, the old damage deck was not balanced, possibly underpowered, and the new damage deck is a FIX or a BUFF. It is worth playing with.
FFG forcing us to use it for competitive matches feels kind of mean, sure, but it's not much different than when they pseudo made us all buy Rebel Aces if we wanted to field missile-less A Wings (which was a fantastic buff for those ships, and a great way for FFG to fix them). It's been months since that happened, and no one is complaining about it any more. I imagine the damage deck will turn out the same way. We will all appreciate what the new damage deck does for the game, making it a bit more interesting for a time, and more fair across more ships.

Dammit Joe Bro...now my life wont be complete without a run in one of your adventures.
2 quarters in a jar per day between now and your first tournament after January 1.
Prioritze, budget your money and SAVE, these things seem to escape the majority of people in the current "now" society! Too many people have to have things "now" and can't perceive the idea of patience!
We know about waves and tournament requirements MONTHS ahead, simply PLAN AHEAD!
As to the damage decks, tons of guys on here have stated that they'll be selling their extras! Save $.50 a week until Jan 1 and buy one from one of those guys at that time! Easy fix, quit the complaining and THINK of a solution!
A (gaming) company saying that if you want to use their product, you need to buy the necessary components... Strange...
