Serious question for "No new core just for damage deck!" crowd

By Filter, in X-Wing

Sad fact about mini's hobbies is that the disposable income you have less disposable time to play. You might start out a pimple faced Rook just buying stuff piecemeal just to get your list, but you're playing the game every minute you're not in class or dumping steamed milk in espresso. Later, you'll be buying an epic and a few packs to top you off for free shipping but will only be playing on weekends since a weekday job and commute has you wiped out when you get home. Fast forward ten years and you'll be buying everything from each wave with multiples of the ones you really want but will struggle to keep them out of the reach of the rugrats while desperately trying to keep your pals from flaking on the quarterly game meetup.

The truly wealthy are the players with the time (and the friends) to play as much as they want.

Good layout of how many of us live I reckon. I have ran RPG's for thirty years since I was a kid in fact. That is why I prefer to play at home running cool solo scenarios and occasionally game with a friend.

It is hard to get out and find good people to play games with. The tiny FLGS in my area is a scum hole at the back of an ancient strip mall which is full of punk rock brats that hate their parents. These white trash card players and gw thugs ain't my kind of peeps (and NO I am not saying that all magic & 40k people are trash... but in my area they are).

Hel-Nah I'll have me a gay 'ole time right here in my nice apartment thanks. Shucks I can just set up a nice display and have fun... kinda like a BIG Kid playing with me wonderful toys!

Dammit Joe Bro...now my life wont be complete without a run in one of your adventures.

I am kinda right good at it too. When I get my wretched ass to making some nice hour long battle videos you'll prolly like them.

I never just play a death match... Hel-Nah! Like I have said a few times I am an extremely advanced RPG GM-reff and I know what the hecks I am do'n.

Plus... I am a character and that makes for all sorts of fun.

Yeah but you might come off as silly or noisy and not seem very professional or business like in your YouTube productions Joe!

"Goodness Gracious Me... NOooo!"

:D

I have neither the time nor the inclination to read all the posts in yet another group therapy session on this forum. Frankly, they are all the same and just as boring as ever. Here is my 2 cents on teh topic of cost shotgun style.

1) You don't "invest" in a hobby/game. It is a sunk cost, like buying a car. Unless you are reselling minis with some sort of value-added upgrade (new paint, lights, whatever), they lose value the moment you open the package. You "invest" in this game like you "invest" in a movie or drinks at the bar.

2) Nobody is forcing you to buy anything. It is a game. It is optional to living a healthy and productive life. Just because FFG makes something does not mean you have to buy it. It is a choice.

3) You don't have to play tournaments. Again, this is a choice you make. It is a lifestyle you choose to partake in. If the game becomes something you are unable to keep up with, do something else.

4) If spending $40 is going to send you down the path to financial ruin, don't spend it. Use the time and money that you would spend on this hobby to better yourself to make more money. It is a choice you can make. If you are broke, don't spend your precious money on toys.

Now I'd like to go on a rant here. I know people will accuse me of being an elitist jerk (or worse) and that is fine. I'm a big boy. I can take it. What most people don't know is that I worked as a janitor to get through college. I as up at 6 AM on Saturdays to clean up puke and other less savory bodily discharges because I was flat broke. I worked my butt off in college to get a degree in an area that would get me a good job. I've worked crummy jobs right out of school so that I could get my foot in the door to lead to bigger and better things. These were all choices I made with the goal to live a better life later. Now I am reaping those rewards. I have a pretty good job that pays me a pretty good salary and gives me time to do things with the kids. I don't worry about $40. Not to sound like an old man, but younger people just don't understand that you start at the bottom and stuff rolls downhill. You have to put up with the stuff to get to a better place and you will get there as long as you strive for that goal. Everyone want to start out as CEO these days...

Same here Brah. I was that cute fat kid (kinda like Spanky from Little Rascals) walking the neighborhood with a lawn mower, gas can and broom in the Summer, and a rake, broom and trash bags in the Autumn working them yards to buy to toys, comics and candy pop pops.

Well said gents! I worked three jobs while in college, cook, apartment manager and maintenance man and picked up construction work in the summer when it worked out! I had a small college loan compared to grads these days and it took years to get my income to a decent level where there was extra for toys! The toys came slowly back then and it took a lot of financial acuity to save the funds for them. I remember saving for almost a whole year to have the cash to buy a $300 rifle that I had wanted for years! It wasn't an overnight purchase!

According to what I've been reading, there is some of you griping about being told you will eventually have to buy the new core set. This is because FFG has said, starting in January '16, you will need the new damage deck for FFG sanctioned events. Seems you think buying the core just for the deck is a waste of money on your part or a money grab on FFG's part.

So the question(s) I have that I would seriously like those of you in that crowd to answer:

How many YTs or Firesprays or B-wings or Interceptors or Aggressors or Z-95s etc...do you own? How many bought a CR-90, possibly just for 3PO? How many have bought 3rd party templates/tokens?

Hopefully this will shed light on how nonsensical your griping is when put next to the fact you bought double YTs and Aggressors or have a RG Interceptor list that where you got 4 red RG Interceptors from buying 4 Aces boxes with all 4 sporting ATs from 2 Starvipers you don't use or have 3PO on that double Facon list.

When your done being a hurt imp player, tell us how many TIE fighter's and Interceptors you own. Who is being nonsensical now? Besides you can proxy cards either by printing or off of sites like Ebay.

Also why would I buy into the new fighter's when all they have done is fly in formation (T-70s) and shoot (and miss) the falcon? (TIE/FO's)

Not sure how I became a hurt Imp player with the post or how many of anything I own invalidates my observation. I'm pointing out that there are people griping about being required to buy a new core set that have most likely bought more than 1 of any given ship and some of those ships cost the same or more than the cost of the new core set.

For the record, I own 8 TIEs(4 of which came from 2 core sets) & 7 Interceptors(2 Aces and 3 singles). I also bought a CR-90 and GR-75 and for a time, was the only one in the game group that had them so we never played an epic game.

I also have 2 new core sets. I have been having trouble coming up with lists built around the new ships. While some of the box contents were not overly useful, I do like being able to take the large asteroids from both new & old cores and I have a spare damage deck. The new rules reference booklet is also nice. I now have a Plano box dedicated to tournies: set of new templates, new damage deck, a slot filled with tokens, slot now containing 6+6 of the dice and a slot for the larger tokens like the asteroids and extra bombs/mines.(So now I just add the ships I'm using for the tourny in the box rather than lug around my whole collection in the large Plano box.)

edit grammar

This, 1000 times this.

I wish there was a "super" like this button.

I bought 2 TFU core sets for the extra ships, dice and damage decks. I like having the spare damage deck for replacing missing cards or to loan out if someone needs to borrow it for a tourney. I do believe that we'll see FFG have a damage deck blister pack up for sale before the deadline where it has to be used.

That would seriously cut into the sales of their starter set. I don't think they'll do it.

The people who wouldn't buy the new core set will look to places like E-Bay to get the new deck. FFG would lose that sale anyway. Having the damage deck available as a blister would solve this problem. They did make a dice blister available. Why not the new damage deck as well.

That second hand deck still came out of a starter set. FFG has already had their pound of flesh by that point.

A (gaming) company saying that if you want to use their product, you need to buy the necessary components... Strange...

Having 2 core sets and numerous expansion packs would be considered necessary components. However now this comes out and all of a sudden your necessary components are out dated. Want to get back to up to date. Get another core set (that you already have two of) and there the problem was solved $40 later (or the cost in currency in your area).

So if you are a rebel player well then good a better X-wing altogether. If you are an imperial player then well not as good two pricey TIE fighters that are somewhere between classic TIE Fighter and TIE Interceptor. If you were scum you are out of luck.

I already got my core set so the whole thing doesn't matter. I know other players that have started to debate if it was time to sell their models (and know telling them how wrong they are here won't help because not all of them browse these forums regularly). If there was a way to purchase the update without the core set then I'm all for it.

Now FFG has provided an alternative to buying a core set in the form of Worlds ticket which is a good move. Still I think would be better for everyone to offer individual sale of the new damage deck for players who don't want to get a new core set but want to remain active in the X-wing competitive scene. Most of us don't have a problem getting a new damage deck, it is getting another core set especially when some have already bought more than one.

I won't get a second Episode VII core set but I will get an additional damage deck if offered so I can play with a friend if they don't have their own collection. If by chance a friend wants to start their own collection, I will direct them to the Episode 7 core set because it has "all necessary components to play X-wing" and direct them away from the classic core set which still says the same thing on its box although now that is very much inaccurate.

I like the fact that they added 3 ships and extra copies of maneuver templates and dice to make $40 for a new damage deck a little less unreasonable.

It's a law of physics that you will never have to hand the specific template you need, and the second law of FFG is that manoeuvre 1 straights only exist 30% of the time.

You need at least 3 to have any chance of finding one when you need it.

Cute fat kid?! Is this you?!

Can I rake your lawn, Milady?

If i were FFG i'd release a standalone damage deck... for $41.

There's probably a reason why i'm not in sales.

Check with GW, I heard they have use for people like you.

So true.

Not to sound like an old man, but younger people just don't understand that you start at the bottom and stuff rolls downhill. You have to put up with the stuff to get to a better place and you will get there as long as you strive for that goal. Everyone want to start out as CEO these days...

Oh, and literally every generation ever believed that the generation that followed them is lazy and entitled and disrespectful and doesn't understand the value of hard work. And literally every generation ever has been wrong.

This isn't really the place for a discussion about this so I'm checking out of this thread. And there was much rejoicing.

Funny how everyone seems to think it's a £30 damage deck. It's got X-wings and TIEs in it too, at lower than blister price.

Just ignore it~

With all this hat tipping from JBR7, it is perfect that someone named Tipperary shows up!

Okay, I laughed.

Which those complaining don't want, I really don't get what people don't understand in this regard.

- On the red corner, people that buy at least one of everything, and can't understand that someone doesn't see this requirement as a sweet sweet excuse to buy more ships!

- On the blue corner, people that buy just exactly what they want or have use of, and don't appreciate having to buy something without any interest on it, only because FFG changed their mind about the damage deck.

Fight!

And over there...

- On the cyan corner, people that buy everything from ebay and don't see a big deal about all of this.

- On the obsidian corner, people who are sick of paying ~$30 for postage and delivery and customs and taxes to get a frigging deck of cards they didn't even asked for delivered to their country.

Which those complaining don't want, I really don't get what people don't understand in this regard.

Firstly, they're perfectly good ships: I don't understand the dislike: they're not bad looking, they're useful in squad building and they're pretty much the original Core's ships with better stats. For the people who dislike them just because they're from a new film, paint the TIEs black and possibly mod the wings on the X-wing so that they're parallel. It's not as if it comes with N1s and Droid Starfighters: it's an X-wing and two TIE fighters. If people are cool with TIE interceptors in red why do they take such issue with TIE fighters in white?

Secondly, even if you do dislike them for being new you still get them. You're not spending £30 for a damage deck. Even if you have no intent on using them, they still have value, even if it's value to someone else. Put them on eBay, trade them with a friend that wants more, there are all sorts of things you can do with them. Given the ships are overwhelmingly the main contributor to the cost of the core set, you might even break even selling them and all their bits (maybe chuck in a few asteroids) for £10 each.
