Serious question for "No new core just for damage deck!" crowd

By Filter, in X-Wing

According to what I've been reading, there is some of you griping about being told you will eventually have to buy the new core set. This is because FFG has said, starting in January '16, you will need the new damage deck for FFG sanctioned events. Seems you think buying the core just for the deck is a waste of money on your part or a money grab on FFG's part.

So the question(s) I have that I would seriously like those of you in that crowd to answer:

How many YTs or Firesprays or B-wings or Interceptors or Aggressors or Z-95s etc...do you own? How many bought a CR-90, possibly just for 3PO? How many have bought 3rd party templates/tokens?

Hopefully this will shed light on how nonsensical your griping is when put next to the fact you bought double YTs and Aggressors or have a RG Interceptor list that where you got 4 red RG Interceptors from buying 4 Aces boxes with all 4 sporting ATs from 2 Starvipers you don't use or have 3PO on that double Facon list.

I'm pretty sure that the majority of people griping are not of the "buy multiples of everything" crowd. Not everyone buys as much as some of us hardcore plastic crack addicts do, and it makes a good bit of sense that they don't want to buy a core set they otherwise wouldn't have picked up just for a damage deck.

Look, mate, I'm on your side and agree that complaining about the damage deck is a little bit silly. But did you really think that a.) we need a new thread about this topic, b.) nobody had yet made this argument in earlier threads, and c.) this sort of snarky, judgmental tone was going to change anyone's mind?

As a new player I find your attitude elitist and insulting. I have been playing for about 6 weeks and started on a bit of a whim, as a result I was unaware that a new core set was incoming (personally as an OT fan I'm less than interested in the ships from the new core anyway). I bought 2 Cores and vader and a Y as well as most wanted, recently I added wave 7 minus the conjoined bomber and the raider. Having spent recent months hobby budget on core sets already I'm incredibly reluctant to shell out for another.

I enjoy playing competitively but I also like to play with friends who use my ships, in order to continue competitive play I will have to stop acquiring ships that I want in my collection that will see actual play in order to acquire a pretty box a damage deck and a handful of upgrade cards. The rest of the contents might as well be space dust for all the use they are to me. What possible harm could be caused by FFG selling a damage deck separately to go alongside the dice packs they already sell?

Personally it was worth the 40 bucks (Got mine for 30). Only reason I would want them to release the decks would be since I'm the TO at the LGS, it would be nice incase new people come in to have an extra on hand at tournaments.

It's worth the bucks if you want the ships, I'm trying to catch up on 6 waves of the game I can put practically every other expansion above the new core in terms of my priority!

Exactly it's only good value if you want the ships if you don't then it's a large ship or three small expansions you want but now can't afford.

Not everyone is rich or in middle age with a good job there are students and others who play that must live in a budget and $30 is several hours working a crap job.

People are being very insensitive to their fellow gamers.

2 quarters in a jar per day between now and your first tournament after January 1.

Uk minimum wage is £6.50 so to buy a starter you have to work four hours.

Four hours at your crap job so you can buy something you don't actually want.

Now ask yourself does that sound reasonable? It's okay for us old farts we got decent jobs and saved up money but we are not all in the same boat.

Four hours of your life to get 33 little cards, two hours to buy them off ebay.

When you see someone buying their second copy of the new core, ambush them and steal the damage deck. Or offer to buy it for a few bucks, that seems less likely to end in an arrest. If I was planning on picking up a second I'd be willing to part with my spare, but as it stands I'm going to wait and see what upgrade cards are in the packs.

That's a fair suggestion but it's still £30 for a damage deck and a couple of upgrades.

As someone who plays on a budget (no OP cards from epics for me :( ) I can sympathise with people who feel screwed, but I understand why FFG has to do this the way they do. The old deck needed replacing, it was mainly irrelevant. A new deck means an improved play experience by quite a bit. Now a deck only expansion would have been nice, but as far as I am aware FFG are not allowed to sell anything without miniatures for X-Wing because of how the license works. Even Imperial Assault, which is basicaly a Decent reskin, is being sold as miniatures game! Now how the LCG fits into that picture I am not entirely sure, but maybe this is managed on a game by gae basis.

Long story short: The new deck was necessary and this is the only reasonable way to introduce it. It sucks if you are on a budge, but there is nothing you can do about it.

For me there is no issue what so ever because I love STAR WARS and The Glory of The FFG STAR WARS Products is the best ever made on Earth.

I WILL own them and love them all foreseers.

I do not care about tournament gypsies yarbeling about spending a little $30 to maintain their utterly ridiculous PROFESSIONAL GAMER HERO STATUSES.

Yet for all of the hate yap they have spat this last week or so, these Schmucks will still buy the thing for $50 because they got to keep their hole in the sad wall strip mall crap FLGS shacks open... they wanna do their part!

:rolleyes::lol:^_^

I ain't here to replace 40k... dats been dead for like fifteen years now.

They sell dice packs mate so I don't get why they can't sell damage decks.

Legal reasons may be one issue but that's guessing we have no way to know but yeah they sell dice and armada movement sticks so you'd think they could sell the deck for a fiver.

It's not a new edition so it's not reasonable to expect everyone to buy another core set there are other ways this could of been handled.

Yes, it's clearly the "professional gamers" who are spreading hate. Come on Joe, there's no need throwing out insults at people who don't play like you. Show a little more love and little less bigotry, star brother.

For someone putting down tournament players you seem to share an unfortunate impression with the worst of them: that your way of playing is the only one that matters. I enjoy tournaments because I get to test my skills in a competitive setting against good players. Not to mention the fact that 5 games of Xwing in a day is a rare pleasure for me. To attack local game stores that are often the only place for some people to get a game is also counterintuitive I feel.

You might see thirty dollars as a small investment but for some that's an entire months budget.

I don't believe that anyone griping about the core set attacked anyone that bought it, why do you feel the need to insult the people that think 30 quid for a damage deck is too expensive?

People feel invested in a game then of course they get passionate about it, other than the damage decks there is very little in the core set for an established player IF you don't like/want the ships. When people feel like they have to pay a "tax" to continue playing a game then they feel frustrated. And who do they direct that frustration at? Why our beloved FFG of course! It's no different than if GW only released core rules in their starter sets forcing players to buy them.

As someone who plays on a budget (no OP cards from epics for me :( ) I can sympathise with people who feel screwed, but I understand why FFG has to do this the way they do. Well dice are different to cards. They are more similar to miniatures than to cards, even. The same goes for Armadas movement tool. It is not 100% convincing, but I still would guess there are legal reasons behind this.

I don't like being forced to buy the new core either, but I also have seen the need for a new damage deck for a long time (lost my first tournament final on drawing the Munitions Failure crit on a HWK, crits shouldn't vary so vastly in their impact!), so at this point I kind of would pay anything for it.

And Joe, calm down, no one wants to take away our beautiful game! I firmly believe it to be the collective will of this entire forum that the game prospers and moves into a healthy direction, no matter how people show that. This is the internet, so some will always be overly protective while others will be the overly agressive "THE SKY IS FALLING!" kind of people. People enjoy tournaments and among those who do there are some who are on a bit of a tight budget. These guys should not be locked out of enjoying the game because they can't afford to keep up with releases. Of course there can be nothing done about it because of the way things are now, but we should support those who are affected. Give away your spare damage decks (or sell them at a fair price), keep this community together!

As a new player I find your attitude elitist and insulting. I have been playing for about 6 weeks and started on a bit of a whim, as a result I was unaware that a new core set was incoming (personally as an OT fan I'm less than interested in the ships from the new core anyway). Ebay good sir. I found a few on there already. Or as I posted in an earlier thread you could buy the new core (provided you have the cash to spare for the moment) and sell off all the stuff you dont want (ie everything but the deck) and get the deck for something like $10 - $11.

Thats your best bet for finding a lone deck at the moment. Sorry to hear this hit you right as you started...
