Massing at Sullust final round

By Overdawg, in Star Wars: Armada

Well, presumably the winner of the 400 pt game would get first dibs on the first choice prize?

Edit : Yep, "Using these newly upgraded fleets, the players will battle for the fate of the galaxy… and the right to take home the Armada Wave II expansion of their choice!"

I'm jealous you guys get to go to an actual event.

I have to practically twist arms and supply both fleets in order to get a single casual game in China :(

"Both players will then be able to complete their 400-point fleets by adding starships, squadrons, upgrades, and objectives drawn from their existing collections, plus those from the Wave II expansions under their command."

This could be my one chance to comand a combined fleet.

from earlier that paragraph,

"One player will construct an Imperial fleet that includes the Imperial-class Star Destroyer and Raider-class corvette, as well as at least one of the Imperial squadrons from the Rogues and Villains Squadron Pack. The other player will construct a Rebel fleet that includes..."

This isn't rock paper scissors, where rock in turn beats scissors

Each level of "rules" are superseded by the next. If the Sullust rules say my fleet is Rebel cuz, coin toss?, I can't refer to the rule book and say that isn't how it's done, I'm stuck being a Rebel.

.And if Sullust defines a Rebel list as being built with 2 1/2 Rebel expansions and my existing collection, then guess what.

As for how each organizer runs things, I hope they are ready with fleets to loan if they are going to declare a players entire collection invalid.

Better hope that you make first so you get to pick your side. Otherwise you have an illegal list

Well, not according the the Sullust rules I have seen. If you have seen the rules sheet sent with the kit, a scan would be a good idea.

Players build a Rebel fleet and an Imperial fleet. That is a REBEL fleet and an IMPERIAL fleet. Not a Rebels mixed with Imperials, not Imperials mixed with Rebels.

Please read ALL the rules not just the portion you feel relevant.

kinda...

I hear what you're saying, and it sounds like we agree.

In any case, he can always apply to move over here, or maybe he could hop the fence that someone will eventually suggest we build between the US and China. (Couldn't resist that one.)

If I had this arise at a tournament I was at, I'd gladly offer up what they need from my collection to build a fleet. I want to watch the last round if I'm not playing in it.

Mostly because I'm not a ****. And the community doesn't need that kind of mentality if it wants to grow right.

When/where are the Sullust events in Portland, OR? I am a bit south and don't make it up that way often, but I am hoping to make the trip for one or two events if I can...

I posted the stores and what dates they will be hosting the event here.

And if you want fuller information (links, addresses, times), then you can also refer to my (earlier) thread of the same topic here. ;)

If you only play/have one faction and are going to a Sullust event you should have a contingency plan in case you need to play the other faction.

If I was a TO at an event and someone was whining about not having the stuff to play a particular faction, I wouldn't feel it my job to accommodate them. I would let them borrow what I have but I don't have much.

I think the real conundrum for Imperial only players would be losing the final round and having the other guy take the ISD. At that point do you take one of the least valuable Xpacs to grow your fleet or pick up the Home One and hope to sell/trade it. Although they still got to play at a fun event and won merchandise so I wouldn't feel bad for a person in that situation.

I wonder what's considered 'whining' in your book.

As a uni-factional player, I'll be in a pickle if I make it to the final round and have to play Rebel. I'm just hoping someone can bail me out with some loaner ships. I don't know if you can use the core set and the Wave 2 ships to make a fleet. Maybe I'd buy an extra neb or a guppy on the spot, but maybe I'd just concede the game and take 2nd.

If it happens at the event at which I'm a TO - I'd consider it my job to try to figure something out. I don't think it'd be much of a problem to do so, but if I can't figure it out, then the player in question will still just have to go home with a big fat prize. I doubt there will be any whining involved.

Do you regularly play with people who would whine under those circumstances?

I know its not how its being done but maybe they should have gone with Top Imperial player vs Top Rebel player in the top 2 match. I know myself having never played Rebels if I was forced to build a list I wouldn't really know where to start or how the play style differs from playing Imperials.

It would not of been fair to the top 2 people of the Swiss rounds.

I have found 400 points can be very forgiving. I think I will throw it into the ring and ask my participants to see if they would be willing to swap sides so that there is some evenness. Regardless I sense I will have to play in each of these since It seems to be around 4 to 5 people. I don't mind. The less amount of players the more prizes all around.

I find most players to be decent agreeable people. Here are some examples to clarify my thoughts on whining.

Not whining:

Imp only player: Oh dang rebels. I don't play rebels, in fact I sold my rebel stuff form the core. Can you help me out?

TO: Sure your welcome you use anything from my collection, but it's not much.

Imp only player: You're right that's not a whole lot. (Said in a joking manner)

TO: Hey Chris and Steve are nice guys you could probably borrow some more from them if you keep track of where it all came from.

Imp only player: I'll go ask them. We're probably all going to watch me get stomped in the round anyway, but I'll try to make him earn his win.

TO: Good luck.

It's possible that this player would make numerous comments about being forced to play rebels during the game. I could see myself playing the martyr and doing so. That could get old and become whining but I think most people wouldn't be too bothered by it.

Whining example:

Imp only player: WHAT I HAVE TO PLAY REBELS. THAT IS SO STUPID I SHOULD BE ABLE TO PLAY WHATEVER I WANT. LET'S JUST SPLIT THE WAVE 2 IMPERIAL STUFF AMONG BOTH OF US AND DO AN IMPERIAL VS IMPERIAL MATCH.

TO: No we're going to play as they directed.

Imp only player: THAT IS SOO DUMB I HATE REBELS. I DON'T OWN ANY REBELS I EVEN SOLD MY REBEL STUFF FROM THE CORE SET. THIS IS STUPID

TO: There is enough people here you can borrow some.

Imp only player: I STILL HAVE TO PLAY A FACTION I'VE NEVER PRACTICED. HOW FUN IS THAT GOING TO BE EVERYONE WATCHING ME GET STOMPED ON. AT LEAST LET ME BUILD A CROSS FACTION FLEET.

TO: No, that wouldn't be according to the rules and it wouldn't be a fun to watch as a true rebels vs the empire game.

Imp only player: YOU'RE BEING UNREASONABLE. THIS IS SO STUPID. IT'S NO FUN IF I HAVE TO PLAY REBELS.

TO: If you want to give up your spot to 3rd place that is fine with me but tell me know now. If not, here is the rebel wave 2 stuff you have until 7:00 to make your fleet.

It can cause an issue. For example, 2 Imperial only players make the final 2, one of them is forced to play Rebels? What if they have no Rebel models? And if they've never even played a game with Rebels? This is a possible issue for a friend of mine, he sold off his core set Rebels the day he got the box. TO's need to be aware of this possibility, and TBH so do players - i'm having a couple of Rebel practice games first in case this crops up, despite being an Imperial player in the main. I do have 1 of each expansion fortunately so can practice and put something on the table.

Fortunately I'm hosting our local event and have ample models from both sides that I can lend if need be.

I think some people on this forum are far too apprehensive about whiny/nasty/impolite/cheating other players. I've found nearly everyone playing this game to be friendly and a good sport.

I sense I am not in that category all the time. . . Thankfully Netrunner is helping me there
