Custom Lightsaber Crystals

Hey guys has anyone had much thought of implicating the use of custom crystals into your adventures. I thought of when thinking about possible campaigns my group would do. I understand a lot of thought would need to be incorporated when determining the effects of custom crystals.

Thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Just look at the crystals already in the core rules; that should give you a pretty good idea of what you have to work with. It doesn't have to be anything more fancy than picking a few existing mods and putting them together in a new combination for your unique crystal.

We actually just did that the other day. The GM let me obtain some crystals and he made them unique. We just use the book and combined certain traits from listed crystals. Not sure how it will affect the balance of the game since I haven't built a saber yet.

I believe the idea will work but be careful to not upset the balance.....

I've devised a number of homebrewed crystals since the FaD Beta, running the gamut from synthetic crystals (regular and unstable) to flawed kyber crystals to a more generic Adegan crystals.

A large part of the design process was simply looking at the existing crystals and going from there. For the synthetic, I wanted to have a baseline similar to the Ilum crystal, so I gave it +1 base damage, increased the crit rating to 3, set the +1 damage mods to 2, gave it 2 mods to reduce crit rating, and 3 mods to add Vicious. Still has Breach 1 and Sunder properties as most 'saber crystals have. Price tag's a little higher than the Ilum since it offers the chance for nastier crits, but not by much, and is a bit less rare though still restricted.

The flawed kyber crystal was meant to be as close to a "starting PC crystal" as possible, so I gave it Damage 5, Crit 3 and only three mods (+1 damage, -1 to crit rating, +1 rank of Vicious). I was tempted to drop the Breach 1 down to Pierce 2 while keeping Sunder, but opted to stick with Breach 1 since this is still a lightsaber. Price tag is still pretty high for a starting PC, but it's practically a steal when compared to all the other crystals. They're not nearly as rare, but still restricted since they can be used as lightsaber crystals.

The Adegan used the same base stats for an Ilum crystal, but with only 2 mods for +1 damage and a single mod for -1 to crit rating and +1 rank of Vicious. Price tag's 2/3rds that of an Ilum crystal, but has the same rarity and is obviously restricted.

I'm planning on creating an elemental lightsaber in my solo campaign (I'm a GM in training whose playing alone to learn rules).

AIR & EARTH

When lightning strikes sand/rock it creates Fulgurite. Best part is, it forms "tubes of glass". It'll make the body of my lightsaber.

FIRE & WATER

This was to be the Khyber Crystal. I'm still researching, but I believe there are crystals formed by underwater volcanic activity. Though I might just resort to something similar to sulphur crystals, for a yellow blade.

Still work in progress though. But it feels right to have an elemental lightsaber formed by the Living Force.
