well my copy of AH turned up this morning, at last, now i cant wait to play it, and have read a lot in the one player thread, now i wont be playing one player all the time, basically when the missus has things to do, but the general consensus from that thread, the majority of people really like it 1 player or not, soooo tonight im gonna start there, question is i think that first game and all am i right to say that 3 random investigators and one goo, would be my best bet, to get the best gameplay?
at last got it today!
hmmm 3 is good yes (4 can be lots of work to start with), but random GOO? No, Id say start with Nyarlathotep or Azathoth.
Awesome purchase btw! Welcome aboard!!!
thanks, for that, will do,
save starting a new thread just for one silly question, i think i know the answer but just want to check to make sure i start right.
i go through all the 5 steps, completing mythos at the end, it says first player does this, now that really means in turn 2 the first player is in fact the 2nd, the one with the first player token, and not the original 1 st player?
i know its silly but as i said i just want to check and make sure, thanks guys
yes thats right the First Player token passes to the next player at the table after the mythos phase. All players act in the turn at each phase in order from the FP. So, in movement all investigators move starting with the First Player. Once this is done all players have Arkham Encounters starting with the FP. And so on. The FP is just a timing mechanism in most cases (later, come your arrival in Innsmouth, the FP will be stalked...)

But if you're playing solo (or any time using more than one investigator), remember the first player token gets passed to the next investigator.

Except when aforementioned Quachil Uttaus is stalking you... At least, it won't get passed until you die
.
Me and my old lady just played for the first time last night and we drew one investigator each and also drew Cthulhu randomly. Needless to say we were defeated rather quickly... But its an awesome game. Next time we're gonna try adding a third investigator and whoever is holding the first player icon will control him for that turn. Also, we'll probably just pick azzy or nyarla to see if we can actually win this time, but win or lose, this game rocks!

How do you lose quickly to Cthulhu
? Green windbag has 13-length doom track. With base game, you have to get some funky Mythos draws to even wake him (of course, this is if you know what to do
).
Even in final combat, you should be guaranteed 7 rounds, that's pretty long by normal final combat standards.

Blah blah blah. The 7 rounds means nothing when he can heal himself and has a -6 modifier. If you beat him on your 7th attack, that means you've taken away 19 doom tokens, again, at -6. Quite a feat, even by today's impossible final combat standards.
Dam! No! Bad Dam! >THWAP<
Don't mind Dam. He's been here forever, and has forgotten what it's like to play AH for the first time...or to play with just the base game...or to play without having memorized every card in seven expansions...
Cthulhu's pretty nasty right out of the box. Especially against just two Investigators. But I certainly admire your guts...spilled out all over the floor, I would imagine...
This game does indeed rock. So so so much.
Welcome to the Carnival, both of you, darknight and Jambly Ho-Tep!

Agreed, especially for the part about thwapping Dam ;')
It's true that if you know what you're doing, it's fairly easy to defeat Cthulhu with just the base game; however, unless you study the game components, it's unlikely that you'll learn the game well enough that you can push over the base game's Ancient Ones for a while.

That's not how the first player token works ;') it just indicates movement order and who gets to make certain decisions for certain situations with cards or monster movement. The real issue is that if you have a third investigator he or she would need to get the first player token too, and if that investigator is neither of you, you can't decide who controls him or her based on possession of the first player token. In other words, just alternate who controls the third investigator, don't use the token to decide it, it doesn't make any sense.
thanks for your comments and welcome guys, ok the other half is going to play tonight, soooo we are thinking 2 investigators each randomly drawn, and playing nylahotep, ill let you know how it goes

I didn't say anything about beathing Cthulhu. OP said they lost quickly, unless they were rolling 0 dice, 7 rounds of final combat should take some time
! Not to mention the game prior to that, 13 doom tokens (too many gates, 8 open is possible, but pretty unlikely in the base game).
Yeah, but you did say: "You should be guaranteed 7 rounds, that's pretty long by normal final combat standards." A comment like that seems to imply that a Cthulhu battle is "no big deal."
