Wave 7 Summer tournament report

By TobyW, in X-Wing Battle Reports

The Summer Kits landed very late here in the Netherlands, and I believe this tournament, which took place on September 10th in Utrecht, was actually the first Summer tournament here. It was an evening tournament (which I really like, it doesn’t cost me a whole day of my weekends) coming a few days after the Dutch Nationals. I couldn’t attend those due to vacation, but the Top 3 players did attend this Summer tournament.

This being my first tournament after Wave 7 was released, I definitely wanted to fly the K-Wing (the only Wave 7 ship I bought, I play mostly Rebels and don’t play Scum at all) and a Y-Wing with Twin Laser Turrets. I then stumbled upon a list that Paul Heaver played in the Team Covenant Aces tournament:

Miranda Doni + Twin Laser Turret

Gold Squadron Pilot + Twin Laser Turret

Blue Squadron Pilot + Fire Control System

Prototype Pilot + Chardaan Refit + Autothrusters

There were 16 players in attendance, we played four 60-minute rounds. Full results and all lists are available here. It was organized by the Subcultures gaming store in Utrecht, with Jacob doing an excellent job as TO.

Game 1

Game one was against Jens, who I had last played against at last year’s National. He had come second in this year’s National, flying an asymmetric BroBots build. His list was

Vader + Cluster Missiles + X1 title + Advanced Targeting Computer

Captain Jonus + Extra Munitions + Proton Torpedoes

Delta Squadron Pilot + Heavy Laser Cannon

I set up (like I did throughout the night) with the B-Wing and the A-Wing on the center and Miranda and the Y-Wing on either flank. Jens grouped his ships together in one corner to be able to make use of Jonus’ ability. Moving forward quickly, I decided to focus on Jonus and Vader first. Jonus actually died quicker than I expected (thank you, TLTs) and got off only one torpedo. Vader went second, the TLTs punching through three agility quite easily. It was the Delta who took the longest to kill, using its white K-turn to do consistent damage with the Heavy Laser Cannon. I lost the A-Wing and I think the B-Wing before the Delta finally went down

Game 2

Game two was against Sander, who said that he was rather inexperienced. He brought

Keyan Farlander + Push the Limit + Heavy Laser Cannon + Jan Ors

Wedge Antilles + Predator

Jake Farrell + Veteran Instincts + Outmaneuver

I really like the Push the Limit/Jan Ors combination on Farlander, since it essentially lets him do Focus/Target Lock/Evade every turn. I knew that taking down Wedge quickly would be both important and doable.

He deployed Wedge and Farlander together in one corner and Jake in the other. I moved towards Wedge and Farlander, taking some damage. Wedge is just mean against agility 1 ships. Since I had turned towards Wedge and Farlander, Jake got good use out of Outmaneuver, but I would still prefer Push the Limit for Focus + Evade. I think I lost the Y-Wing in this one, but the B-Wing had definitely taken quite some damage, too, by the time Jake went off the table.

Game 3

Moving up to the top table, I got to play against Vincent with

Dash + Predator + Recon Specialist + Heavy Laser Cannon + Outrider

Leebo + Predator + Jan Ors + Heavy Laser Cannon

That’s Focus + Evade on Dash if within range 3 of Leebo. My goal was to take out Dash first. Unfortunately, in the first round of shooting the Y-Wing was within range 1, so I decided to spread my fire instead of having Miranda shoot at Leebo, too. This was probably a mistake. Leebo stuck around a little longer than was good for me, using his primary against ships that snuck into range 1 of him and doing quite some damage this way. By the time Leebo was dead, I had only Miranda left. I think that by this time, Dash was at three hull, with Miranda having one shield left. With the new partial MoV rules, I could have SLAMmed to safety and a modified win, but here I would have to kill Dash in the few minutes remaining. Here I made the mistake of not being aggressive enough. With 6 vs. 3 hit points left, and shooting first at PS8 vs. PS7, I should not have bothered regaining shields, which eventually meant that I only did one damage two turns in a row. With one hull left, Dash’s Heavy Laser Cannon killed Miranda after time had been called.

Game 4

Not that I really minded, since winning would have paired me against Chiraneau and Whisper. I don’t like Phantoms… Instead I got to play against Maykel, who has won a Regional this season and was flying BBBBZ. I had never played against BBBBZ before, but was glad that I finally got the chance.

My approach was to avoid concentrated fire from all four Bs by spreading out my ships and blocking him with the Prototype A-Wing. The blocking went pretty well, with the A-Wing ending up right in his formation, causing lots of bumps and lost actions. The Y-Wing and Miranda did consistent damage with their Twin Laser Turrets, two damage each turn. Firing last, the A-Wing killed two B-Wings and the Z-95. Maykel managed to take out the Y-Wing and the B-Wing, but I think but Miranda wasn’t even hit once by the time the last B-Wing left the table. I must admit that the dice were in my favour in this game, with Maykel often getting only one hit from three unmodified red dice, with me getting the one evade that I needed.

I ended up in third place, Vincent took the win. I got not only the Recon Specialist card (finally, I don’t own the HWK-290!) and the dice bag, but also five focus tokens since Subcultures splits the tokens that come with the kits, and gave us the choice between focus and evade since they had focus tokens left from the Store Championships kit.

Conclusions

As has been quite obvious since Wave 7 came out, Twin Laser Turrets are strong. I like Miranda, too - high PS, good ability, and there are times when SLAM comes in handy to get out of arcs. I expect her to become more popular now since she’s not affected by partial MoV. Recon Specialist is good on her, too, but this list doesn’t have the points for it. The Y-Wing is an excellent TLT carrier (though the Scum version with Unhinged Astromech is even better), the B-Wing struggled a little by comparison. I didn’t get much use of the Fire Control System this time around, but it has worked well for me in the past. The Prototype was great - a great blocker at PS1, often ignored it can do quite some damage at range 1. I can see myself flying this list some more.
