this maybe a stupid question?

I come from a background of non-board gaming and I'm a little confused over the melee in IA.

When melee takes place, does one protagonist resolve the outcome of the attack, and then the opponent, ie an attack each or does they only attack in their own phase?

Attacks are not simultaneous. They attack in their own phase.

If you are using a figure to attack, the figure that is being attacked rolls to defend as you roll to attack. If you eliminate that figure, it is removed from the board and can't attack you. This is important because sometimes the best defense is a good offense.
