Is your meta different?

By nikk whyte, in X-Wing

Granted, we are in that weird "a lot of stuff just came out and tournament season is over" dead zone, but I'm just not seeing a lot of TLT in my local meta. Lots of tie advanced right now, with some ordnance and lone k-wing kickers.

It could be a by-product of the huge influx of stiff that just hit the game, but then again, my area has always been different. We can catch phantoms with X-wings, and we didn't have a 2 ship build win anything until regionals, and that guy wasn't a local.

So tell me about your weird meta. Tell me what hasn't stuck and what has.

we had one guy run quad TLT Y-Wings in our league for four weeks. He was already in first place, and our more casual league members did not have the tools to make it even an interesting game. He went 8-1 over the last four weeks, only losing to SensorJammer Brobots, which had been built specifically to take his list down.

There was a huge sense of frustration with FFG, since the games no longer felt like X-Wing and instead just felt like "watch this guy roll a bunch of dice until I'm dead." The guy has promised not to bring them to the next league since it caused so much strife and was not a fun experience.

Our tourney players have decided, mostly, that fat turrets and large ship dominance, generally, is less fun than dog fighting. We tend to see more small ships.

A dominant list last month was 7 Z's with feedback and some missiles. No one was punching through his swarm fast enough to finish him.

Our Meta is pretty diverse with people usually switching up there lists and list types every tournament. One constant though is the same group of players usually win because they're generally better players.

My area's meta is constantly shifting. Our players constantly play with each other and play fun lists during casual season for tournaments and stuff. Many of the better players in my area don't play certain lists simply because they are meta. A lot of that goes out the window when store championship season comes around, though.

This is pretty much exactly my local meta.

last store tournament i went to was 50% TIE Advanced. No. That is not an exaggeration. Literally half of the players were running at least 2 TIE Advanceds.

I'm the only person at my flgs that will run empire. Everyone has rebel 4 ship list or scum 2 or 3 ship. Once a guy surprised everyone by bringing a 8 tie swarm to a tournament. His lack of experience with them showed. Also as whisper was just "too good" (post - nerf btw) it has upped everyone to bringing ps 10 or 11.

Chaos.

THERE IS NO META ONLY ZUUL

I have been reading the FFG news articles. I am contemplating on bringing a list from one of the more recent articles to my first tournament. I recognize that I have limits on my understanding of and ability with the game. At this stage of my development, I would never field a 8-TIE Fighter swarm. I am looking at most three ships.

For some of you, this may seem a silly question. If you do believe it is silly, please do not be nasty or snarky in your remarks. I have heard this word, meta, bandied around. When you speak about the meta, what is for you the definition of meta?

I first ran tlt with Miranda, a warden and a gold squadron

I took a small break and missed a tournie where the top 2 had two tlts

First time I ever set a trend :P

But otherwise, complete chaos and it's ******* lovely :D

My meta consists of forgetting to use upgrades and pilot skills, elbowing the crap out of whatever is in play, and cold dice. Pretty steady no matter what FFG releases.

lakenheath 72. It seems to me that when most people speak about the meta they are referring to the "game" outside the game i.e. which lists/strategies are popular among players both globally (usually just referred to as the Meta) and locally (Usually referred to as the Local Meta).

As for my local meta we tend to change things up fairly often, but generally the lists people run are usually variations on lists they have run before with a trend towards rebel 4 ship or scum swarm.

You can do better than that!

The first one is your local meta which is what kind of lists are being played in your area. Are there any trends such as mainly imperials or a certain archetype likes swarms or aces. Some local areas have a ton of swarm players while others have a ton of high ps arc dodgers.

The 2nd and most common type is the general meta or what is pretty much being played at the highest level and will be common to see at tournaments. In the very beginning the meta was pretty much bring as many generic pilots as possible. For a long time time unique pilots were thought to be over priced and not worth the points and look at where we are now.

One thing to remember is that the meta is changed by tournament results mainly and not just because a ship or upgrade is released. So take with a grain of salt what people on the forums say when they talk about meta changes when a new article comes out. If you want to get a good idea of meta trends watch for premiere level results and watch consistent high level players and listen to what they have to say.

Another thing to remember is that unlike games like league of legends which has a more stiff meta (ad carry+support bot, ap carry mid, bruiser/tank top, 1 jungle at least last time I played) that doesn't change as much x wing has a lot more of a luck and random factor because of dice but generally the better players tend to continue to win events even with goofy builds some would call non meta heck the current gencon winner won with dash that is completely different than most people's version of "the best dash". So definitely realize that some ships are inherently better than others and match ups are definitely a real thing but if you have a real good understanding of the game and a little bit of luck you can win with pretty much anything with different degrees of difficulty.

As far as listening to the meta it can be a good idea to study up on it if you're going to compete alot. I know who the best players and what they run in certain areas around me so I make sure I have answers for them. For gencon and world's in practice against common top tier lists.

God that is fugly. And people complain about Joe's images. Hate his spam but at least it has something.

Ditto. We are all friendly guys, but I do hate it for new people. Feel bad for it when they come in and just can't win. Haven't lost any of them yet though. We are almost entirely rebel down here. Me and maybe 2 other stalwart Empire players. Also, no one has really got on the TLT band-wagon. Saw two in one tourney. One didn't place in top 4, other got 3rd.

For me, the meta was mostly arc Dodgers and two ship fat builds; haven't been to casual night in a while, so I'm looking forward to going and screwing around with an FO swarm, and possibly breaking out death rain or red line.

I'm eager to go back and see how it's changed, and I've only been out of the casual tournament scene for a month!

New Zealand is a real mish-mash of net lists, outside the box squads and strong themed lists that actually work.

Y-Wings were already good b4 TLT arrived. The cat is out of the bag. Two ship lists will still be viable imo but they will need to adapt to what the new strong upgrades have bought to the table.

Its a good time to be a tournament player. Changes are afoot and the meta is as diverse as ever. Well done FFG.

I enjoy the local SoFlo meta- though I kinda wish newbie rebels learned the game on something other than pancakes. Pancakes require a certain kind of flying that is just really hard to do when you're learning and it's probably better to learn on other things.

Well, not sure what our meta is right now. A lot of variety right now due in part to viable Advanced, TLT's, and just new stuff in general. One or two players here and there playing a fat turretwing list but that's fine. Also, end of the tournament season.

Before TLT you could no joke show up to a casual $5 tournament and be the only one out of 5-6 people NOT flying at least one fat turret in your list. TLT's seem to have changed that, or at least they're perceived to have changed it as I'm one of the few players who runs quad TLT in my area. There is a triple K TLT player who has been doing well with it.

I don't think the meta has completely settled yet. TLT's dominate but IG's do pretty well against those and most everything else, so probably a dual IG/TLT dominated meta with a ton of BBBB(Z) lists and quad Advances and such doing well also. Return of the Super Phantom also.

Are pancakes the YT-1300?

Pancakes are yt1300 and 2400 plus the vt49 decimator. Basically large ship with primary turret, they are usually round and flat. Like pancakes. :D

Seems my area is mostly swarms or agile 2 ship lists. I've been flying 3 T-70 and doing well lately. We'll see how the tournament scene goes in the next couple weeks.
