Love the new Force Awakens ships, but...

By Tyrell Archer, in X-Wing Off-Topic

As much as I like the design of the expanded universe ships (which are apparently no longer canon...) my favorites are always the minis from the films. I love seeing the new T-70 X-Wing and TIE fighter, but you know what I'd love to see just as much? Naboo starfighters. Vulture droids. Jedi Starfighters, Jedi Interceptors, ARC-170s, Tri-Fighters, and the first Slave I. When I play Star Wars, I don't want to play parts of the saga... I want to play the whole thing!

Probably never happen. FFG has said that they intend to stick to the Galactic Civil War timeline, which seems to include the new trilogy. I suppose if the game is still going strong and the supply of EU ships dries up (they'll run out of Legends long before then) they could do a prequel game. Presumably the two would be on a different scale of firepower and agility, but other than stating that in a rulebook there's no reason the two eras couldn't be compatible.

I'm thinking of getting a micromachine Nubian ship, the one from Phantom Menace, to use as a "senators shuttle". Wouldn't mind a few Naboo fighters to escort it.

The good news is that FFG seems to love Star Wars, and share most of our biases about what is _good_ about Star Wars. They also seem to have a fairly free hand about what they are going to make.

Sadly, the part about sharing our biases also seems to extend to the Prequels. I'd say most Star Wars fans my age hate the prequels, and thus also don't have find feelings for ships from that era. I'm actually different from most people my age- I heart a lot of the ships from that era- so I feel your pain.

More than any other reason, the fact that the designers of X-Wing don't have much passion for the prequels is why we will probably not see the N1 in this game.

And if it _is_ a function of passion, that probably says good things about the health of this game going forward.

Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if there weren't some prequel era designs in service during the ST era, much less the OT era. They are probably upgraded but its only a little over 50 years from the end of the PT to the start of the ST and 23 years between the end of the PT and the End of the OT so I doubt all the prequel era fighters were retired by the GCW.

I'm not opposed to two prequel factions -- Old Republic and Separatist -- as new factions. And I'm not even much of a prequel fan -- but it would be nice to have Clone-Wars era battles for all the fans of that series. Some current ships (Z-95, Y-Wing, Firespray, YT-1300) could even cross over.

Both the Falcon and Slave 1 appear in the prequels. Does that make them prequel ships?

You can get the prequel Slave 1 by painting it; it's the same ship bar a few adjustments by Hondo and a new coat of paint. There's no Jango Fett to pilot it, but you could probably make your own Jango card.

Since there will now be yearly Star Wars movies with their own unique ships for Fantasy Flight to sell for foreseeable future, I doubt we'll be seeing any prequel factions. We might see a few prequel ships snuck into the Galactic Civil War through media like the Rebels TV Show, so maybe we'll still get something.

Yeah we've already seen some TCW capships in Rebels so TCW and PT fighters and transports wouldn't surprise me. Though the big question is will the new movies and Rebels seasons include enough X-Wing appropriate craft to fill up FFG's releases?

We just need the ARC-170 and the T-47 Airspeeder and we will have the Incom product showcase. Plus it would be really cool to line up the ARC-170 on one end and the T-70 X-wing on the other showing the evolution of the ships, being ARC-170, Z-95, X-wing, T-70. You could even slip in the E-wing before the T-70.

For me, the prequels did a lot of damage to me as a fan, then the clone wars cartoon came out, and I started to warm back up to them.

It's gotten to the point now where I really like the majority of the ship designs, and the characters that fly them.

If they did expand into the prequel territory, and they were able to make the ships different and interesting to fly, I'd give it a shot.

Definitely. Remember, making new vehicles to merchandise as toys has always been a big part of Star Wars. ;)

Maybe but the movies seem to hold seem themselves to around one wave of X-Wing Scale craft per movie

I think it could be handeled in a wave or two and at the rate FFG is going, they will need more in another 2 years or so haha. What would be interesting is how do you handle simulating droid pilots? No elite talents I would assume. Perfect formations setting one dial for two or three ships, having formation templates, and requiring that each ship attack the same target? Of course they would be super cheap (points wise). Just Ideas popping into my head. Jedi with their fighters could do some very interesting things as well. But, they have to have equivalency ratings similar to GCW (though not on par certainly) so they can be flown against each other.

For the record, the only good prequel was number 3. Two was ok if you cut out every part with Anakin haha. Same for 1 except add Jar Jar with Anakin … but then the movie would be 30 minutes … and a lot better buwahahaha.
