Supporting Local Stores

By EbongHawk, in X-Wing

So I have not bought a single ship from anywhere other than my local game store. I don't have the biggest collection but I feel as though it is substantial. My store offers no deals for bulk and nothing for preorders. Monthly tournaments are cheap but just increased in price and I just was curious how many others pay full list price for their minis. Not going to rant or rave as I really do believe in supporting local stores but when I'm dropping $200-300 a wave that maybe 5% off MSRP would be reasonable. Again not attacking or raving just curious if most stores are unwilling to budge or if you guys get deals on bulk. Thanks!

Just ask them about it? Surely if you go often and spend a lot of money, they probably know you by name, yes? Just have a casual chat with them about it, worst they can do is say no.

I go where I can spend the least amount of money...and that is 9 times out of 10 my FLGS. He offers lower than MSRP outright and a steep discount for preorders. He actually poached me from my old FLGS because his prices were better and he always had Xwing in stock as opposed to my old place.

I am not above checking Ebay or Amazon though. It all comes down to where I spend the least. That is my only real concern.

Most common responses from the last thread we had on this....

  • I always buy from my FLGS because I play there and want to support them.
  • I can't afford to buy at full retail price. I only buy from online stores.
  • I would buy from an FLGS, but there aren't any good ones near me.
  • I buy from my FLGS most of the time, but go online for bulk purchases or Epic ships because they cost so much more.

I have brought it up and the owner seems like he is going to and then I'm checking out and he says he just can't do it. I'm really considering just getting them at MM and see if actually going through with not buying from him will show him I'm serious.

At that point you just say, ok nevermind I will buy online. They would rather sell ships than not sell ships and they can tell you will buy anyways right now. If you show that you want them to give you the same loyalty you show them, they will offer you some sort of discount. At least something to show that they want to keep you around, even 5% is something!

I get a break at my store on preorders. Most stores do that.

One of my FLGSs does a loyalty card, which would definitely have made a loyal customer out of me if they didn't also jack up the price of stuff like the Tantive and Phantom by $5 'cause they know people need the upgrades in them for tournament lists. But, like the original poster, I've bought the majority of my collection locally at full retail because I want to support the places that provide me with a place to play!

My FLGS seems to charge full RRP on products on the shelf, but do offer discounts if you preorder.

Regardless, I'd be more than happy to pay RRP across the board, since other than a friend at work (Hi mazz0) I don't l know anyone who I've not met at my FLGS that plays tabletop games / RPGs. As a bloke in my 40s, other people to play with aren't easy to meet outside of an environment like that and so they provide a vital service.

I make a point of buying my ships from virtually everywhere that sells them. LGS sales probably account for about a quarter.

Mine does double loyalty points on preorders, and their loyalty program is a bit better for rpg and comics etc as opposed to x-wing.

I support them when I want a small based ship, as I'd rather pick it up than save on the list price, only to have it bounce back to pre-existing price due to shipping.

Also when I want a game book etc as it's easier to pick up.

Besides the monthly tournaments how often do you play at the store?

While it seems like a 'noble' cause to support your FLGS, it really comes down to business. Do you want something immediately upon release? Pick it up FLGS. Do you play enough at your FLGS each month so it's convenient to just grab a ship here or there? FLGS. Are you going to order over $100 from an online source at a steep MSRP discount? Go online. Between the onesie-twosie purchases of ships and card sleeves, deck boxes, and other misc support items (and now colored bases), the FLGS gets plenty of business. Most of it has to do with the store's X-Wing community. If the community is small, they are obviously not going to be going broke if people do not purchase there, but if they host large amounts of players in regular intervals, it could be a primary component to their store. If they are going under they might need to rethink their business model.

I've bought 95% of my collection (69 regular plus one each of the epics) at my FLGS for retail or thereabouts. There is a loyalty program that probably effectively knocked off a few percent. I help run the tournaments and other events there and like having a place to play.

I have a very FLGS. They're great. They do charge full MSRP, but when a new wave comes out I always buy at least one of everything, usually more, and the owner gives me a bit of a discount. I will admit that I've bought a few ships from MM or CSI from their Deals, but I do everything I can to support the local store.

I am kicking myself for buying two of the new Core sets from Target a couple weeks ago, then finding out that the game store would get them this week.

My LGS doesn't even have tables for us to play on.. I have to scoot a couple of those chepo card tables together. And then I usually have to clean all the sticky crap off them left over from "Magic night" So no I don't feel bad ordering from the net.. The non-local store in the next town is cool though and I do buy a ship most every time I play there..

My flgs sells at msrp but has free play flight path games (but almost pure xwing usually) on Wednesdays and all flightpath stuff is 10% off on Wednesdays. They also give a 10% off coupon to your account whenever you spend an accumulated $100. The coupons don't stack with anything but they don't expire and are usable whenever so it's still a pretty sweet deal, and being a regular usually gets me 10% off of random things when the manager is working. It's pretty boss and I'm sorry your lgs doesn't do it, op.

If a FLGS isn't attempting to keep its customers over an online store, in any way, shape, or form, then they miss out on my business.

I'm not saying they can slash prices like a non-rent paying online shop can, but they can at least play ball with periodic sales, loyalty discounts, or SOMETHING.

I don't have any FLGS near me that at all cater to their customer, beyond having an impressive amount of on-hand stock. Seems to work for them. I personally buy from eBay/MM but am happy to pay tournament fees and the like at the local shop.

Similar rule for comic books -- if you've got me coming back weekly to your shop and you can't throw the tiniest of bone, I'm not shopping with you. Period. (My LCS offers 5 or 10% off if you have a Pull List with them. Honestly, the number isn't even important, just that they're trying to somewhat stay competitive).

MM's new flat rate shipping really blows any FLGS out of the water (near me). And, while I would be bummed if the stores around me closed, us nerds would find another way to hold tournaments, so it's not enough of a concern for me (and supporting local economy can be done even if the store offers a piddling discount).

I'm a little surprised your store doesn't give you any breaks. My store sells everything at 5% MSRP and will cover the sales tax for you if you preorder. As others have said, it's a little thing but it's appreciated.

I've only purchased from th store ever since I learned they have a regular group. Granted, I've probably only spent around $200, but that's 100% of my gaming money for the year, so I feel justified in using the space.

I just want to say a couple things about how great the owner of my local store is.

Over the summer, we had an eight-week league. Each week was a different format. At the end, each player got a glass that she etched with Star Wars symbols full of candy and goodies.

Last weekend, we had a benefit tournament for a local animal shelter. The entry fee was donations - dog food, etc. For each dollar you donated, you got a "cheat" token that you could use during your games to remove a stress token, reroll a die, and so on. We had eight players, and a good time was had by all. Each player got a goodie bag with a customized coffee mug ("Come to the Dark Side - We have cookies!"), candy and a Light Side/Dark Side light switch cover. First place and the player with the most remaining cheat tokens (which happened to be the last place player ironically) got a three-foot tall trash can that she customized to look like R2-D2. The effort she goes to is just incredible. And the store didn't make a dime for this. In fact they lost money, since she paid for all the prizes, never mind the work she put into it.

I am very thankful I have such a great place to play.

My FLGS does 10% off everything, and if you're a member ($25 a year) you get at least 20% off all everything. It's sweet.

My FLGS is pretty much full MSRP, but we're in a tough market so I understand and try to buy a few items there. Most of my purchases are from MM, not just because of price, their customer service is pretty great.

I get irritated when local players boast about saving a few bucks by buying online. We need to support the local game stores so we have places to play, meet new players, and learn about new games.

I buy the first ships in a new wave from my FLGS. If I know I am going to get multiples, then I shop around online for a bulk deal.

Bought my TFA core set yesterday at full price. I make sure that they know I'm there for x-wing and that because they support it, I purchase from them.

I started the X-Wing group at my local FLGS, so I feel like I've done more than my fair share of bringing X-Wing players' money into the store. I'm also the linchpin of my X-Wing group and invest a lot of time and energy into that. The store orders the tournament kits for me and I pay them in full for that, and then I run the tournaments as I see fit. It's a nice arrangement.

As the tournament organizer, I think it's important to be well-informed about the state of the game and familiar with what's available, so I'll purchase new products from wherever I can get it fastest. Often, that means Amazon.

I also buy a lot of product from my FLGS, usually the second, third, fourth copies of whatever I already have. I just bought my second Force Awakens core set from my FLGS. I got the first one at Target.

I've bought all of my Epic stuff from Amazon because of the big discounts.
