Supporting Local Stores

By EbongHawk, in X-Wing

My FLGS is my home away from home, discovered it about a year ago when I started buying into X-Wing. They offer ships at the standard prices £11.99 for small ships, £24.99 for Falcon and £32.99 for the Hounds Tooth. So while I could get it cheaper online, it is only just a few quid...and we are provided with a space for playing X-Wing whenever we want. There is a 50p board fee but that covers an entire day no matter how many games you play and its reasonable because the store supplies their own custom painted boards to play, the money probably goes towards the rental of the space and upkeep of the boards themselves.

When there is a large release, such as an epic ship or in the recent example, a new core set, they usually have a deal for the first few days where its a few pounds cheaper to encourage people to buy immediately. Tournament registration is cheap at around £5, although our upcoming one is probably going to be more because its a local tournament and the more people that participate, the bigger the prize pool (vouchers for free Wave 8 stuff).

I'm proud of my FLGS and I'm proud to be on the stores commentary team for X-Wing Tournament streams. I'd rather give my money to them, a face I know, rather than a faceless entity like Amazon.

Just so I am clear, those talking about high prices, are not saying that MSRP=high prices, right?

That's what they're saying.

I'm not entirely sure. There are stores that charge more than MSRP.

Not saying they don't exist, but I've never came across one.

The bay of E or that dwindling South American rainforest n the other hand...

I buy almost everything from miniature market, which is someone's FLGS, just not mine. But I buy my card boxes, paints, brushes, and any drinks & snacks from the flgs when I'm playing there. Occasionally I'll but a ship frm the flgs, but its not very often.

One of my local shops sells E-wings and Phantoms for $19, A-wings and Interceptors for $30-35, in the U.S. these should only cost $15.

Hmm need a unlike button for that!

The bulk of my orders are CSI/MM I do purchase drinks/snacks from my LGS $3-5 every time and the once in a while small ship here and there but the guy who works there isn't the friendliest and while we get space, I've never felt overly welcomed so they get my support but not the full weight of it. They charge MSRP w/ no discount

I have never seen a store that charges more than MSRP, but hear they are prevalent in other places. The local store charges MSRP, while there are two FLGSS and a B&N 80 miles away and two charge MSRP, while the third charges LESS!

So I have not bought a single ship from anywhere other than my local game store. I don't have the biggest collection but I feel as though it is substantial. My store offers no deals for bulk and nothing for preorders. Monthly tournaments are cheap but just increased in price and I just was curious how many others pay full list price for their minis. Not going to rant or rave as I really do believe in supporting local stores but when I'm dropping $200-300 a wave that maybe 5% off MSRP would be reasonable. Again not attacking or raving just curious if most stores are unwilling to budge or if you guys get deals on bulk. Thanks!

Nope! The FLGS only seems to host organized Card Games and WH40K. Hence, I haven't bought any XWing there. The XWing stock seems to collect dust, yet I know there are 20+ players in the area!

You know which FLGS has X-wing players. Shall we organize a Saturday epic event?

What date, are you considering? Things are getting busy here and I have to plan waaayyy ahead!!

Personally, I like to save money which I could use elsewhere (pay bills, food, etc). I've done the majority of my spending online. However, without a place to play then there isn't a point in investing the game.

Past couple of years I've been getting in the habit of supporting LGS if it supports the product (play space, group of folks to play, etc) and is a friendly place to play. The LGS I went to only provides MSRP and offers occassional sales. Right now my spending is split in buying items from the LGS and online. Supporting the store for the amount of time I play there and saving some money.

Not everyone who runs a store should be running one. It isn't out of the realm of possibility. Especially when a ship is awaiting reprint.

I buy smaller ships from FLGS, and bigger ones online. I wouldn't be able to afford the bigger ones at that price anyway, so no guilt from buying online. I buy snacks and drinks as well, from FLGS.

I keep seeing people say this, but it's not really true, is it? I mean, if you bought 1 each of the wave 1 ships, you spent the same amount as you would on the GR-75. Both are $60 MSRP and $40 MM/CIS prices. If you feel huge/large ships are too expensive, why are small ships okay?

(I'm not directing this at solely you, Rippy, but at everyone who has said this so far.)
