New Damage Deck as an OP giveaway?

By gamblertuba, in X-Wing

How 'bout this for a snazzy PR move: FFG sends out organized play kits with 10 copies of the new damage deck. Stores buy 1 or 2 kits depending on size of their player-base and offer one copy of the deck for each preregistration.

Can't be all that costly for FFG to produce, they get money back from stores when buying the kit. Store gets money back from preregistered players. More players at the store playing X-wing is a win for everyone.

Any reason not to make this happen? I really don't think FFG will lose out on too many sales of the new core set this way but who knows.

edit: superfluous "really"

I'm sure this would only benefit a small number of players.

The secondary market and gaming clubs will probably be sufficient for supplying the extra damage decks that are desired. And it'll probably happen very quickly. I'd be surprised if we're still hearing complaints about this a month from now.

Don't hold your breath. I foresee a flood of these on secondary market now that core sets are appearing outside of US target stores.

It really wouldn't make much business sense for FFG to have the OT core set have the obsolete DD in and the new DD in TFA core set! The OT core is already being re-printed,and I'm %99.9 certain comes with the new tweaked ruleset and DD, Retailers have to run down there current stocks of Original core sets at discounted prices to shift them or FFG could recall them for rebranding which IMHO would be far more troublesome then just letting stocks run down!

Compete to play is always, always a bad way to go. No matter how many include.

I just don't see FFG allowing two versions of the OT core set to coexist. Maybe just slap a sticker on the front of the new ones that says "New Damage Deck"? seems clunky.

So you think they should sell it with a damage deck that will never be used and that has old rules? That'd be pretty silly, unless they lowered the price.

The other damage deck is only obsolete for tournament play. New players who don't own anything probably won't care and may even want to try out both.

Both options are problematic. My guess? FFG will continue to sell the OT core with the same contents as always. Retailers will not want one SKU with two different contents. I hope I'm wrong but we will have to wait and see.

But you only need the new damage deck for official tournament play. The old deck is still fine for casual play, so it isn't "compete to play." FFG would just be making the new deck available for competition without requiring you to by the new Core Set.

It sounds like a good idea to me.

Old Core set does not appear in Upcoming page anymore... Wasn't it listed as being reprinted recently?

The two OT coresets will only co-exist until the Original Core set has been phased out through normal retail sales! FFG can speed up this transitional phase by simply discounting the Original core sets to say 50% rrp or less even? Who wouldnt pick one up just to add a T-65 and some ties to there fleets?

I don't care if it is a participation prize. You are still tieing something needed for OP to a prize. There is a very, very good reason why this doesn't appeal to people.

I don't follow. The damage deck is available in the new core. I'm not proposing some "special holo-foil OP only damage deck." Just saying you hold a tourney and then hand out what people need for that tourney in case they haven't bought the new core already.

Not trying to be obtuse or start an argument but I really don't understand your objection to the idea.

Based on the recent news article, it's probably safe to assume that the original core set will continue to be available. I'd also wager that it will be reprinted with the new rulebooks, templates, damage deck, etc.
