What counters Quad TLTs?

By vyrago, in X-Wing

My Scum Boba with EU, Glitter, and Cluster Missiles has been doing well against TLT. I've found it's exceptionally hard to keep boosting large ships out of Range 1.

That donut hole is my sweet spot but the TLT's weak spot.

I guess the difference is between league and tournament play. In a league, you change lists between each game if you want. Which means you can build a list to counter TLTs and pull it out when you have to play one. But in a tournament, do you build a list just to take on TLTs? what if you don't get seeded against any?

TL;DR the slight consensus seems to be TIE swarms vs 4 x TLT.

Jonus, EM, Concussions

3 x Gamma, EM, Concussions

So dangerous the TLT swarm is, but so many counters

the word you're looking for is "balanced"

Ah yes, thank you.

I meant the TLT is so balanced ...

Making up counter-TLT lists is fun. The hard part is making them good at anything other than TLT's. Here's one that would probably be terrible for any other purpose:Carnor Jax (33)TIE Interceptor (26), Lone Wolf (2), Royal Guard TIE (0), Autothrusters (2), Stealth Device (3)Sigma Squadron Pilot (33) x 2TIE Phantom (25), Sensor Jammer (4), Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

A very similar squad has been run by a darthlurker on this forum. He's run it pretty successfully in Spanish and French national competitions. His has PTL, Autothrusters, and Shield on Jax, and Stygium with Sensor Jammer and Intelligence Agent on his two Sigmas. So it's not bad against other things if flown properly.

I made top 4 in a regional and a national with it, having faced all of the standard meta lists (Han/Zs, Dash/Corran, brobots, Double Decimator, etc.), so it's not terrible against non-tlt lists but it is very unforgiving if you make a mistake.

I'm currently running this, with a fair amount of success against lots of lists including TLTs:

"Echo" (30)Veteran Instincts (1)Sensor Jammer (4)Advanced Cloaking Device (4)Carnor Jax (26)Push the Limit (3)Autothrusters (2)Royal Guard TIE (0)Omicron Group Pilot (21)Emperor Palpatine (8)Total: 99View in Yet Another Squad Builder

Basically, the goal is to have Palpatine hang back for support and sniping while Jax and Echo attempt to get into Range 1 on different TLTs. If the turrets stick together they get torn up really quickly; if they split up, they're left unable to concentrate their own fire and facing either Sensor Jammer or Autothrusters.

I've been play-testing SableGryphon's Jax/Strom/Kagi list, and while I love using the emperor and Kagi's evil synergy with Jax and Sensor Jammer, I feel that it's too low on firepower for a 3-ship list, especially if you lose Jax. I plan to start testing the following after the Spanish national this weekend:

Zertik Strom — TIE Advanced 26

Veteran Instincts 1

Sensor Jammer 0

TIE/x1 0

Carnor Jax — TIE Interceptor 26

Push the Limit 3

Autothrusters 2

Royal Guard TIE 0

"Echo" — TIE Phantom 30

Veteran Instincts 1

Sensor Jammer 4

Recon Specialist 3

Advanced Cloaking Device 4

100 points

Similar to your list but it gives a strong incentive for the enemy to focus on the advanced while close range is maintained.

Obsidian Swarm is good. Academy Pilot based swarm might have a rough go at it.

I picked the Palpatine shuttle because he represents another tactical dilemma: if my opponent aims to kill him first, I get a couple of rounds where Echo and Jax are attacking unimpeded (usually with an extra crit each round to boot), and if I can't make something out of that I deserve to lose.

But if they don't kill him first, I get to toss three extra red dice every round hoping for hax and I get to keep Palpatine as insurance against bad defense rolls on whoever's taking the brunt of the attacks.

And the mid to high 20s are kind of an awkward spot in the Imperial library of options, right? Your choices are pretty much a mid-tier TIE Advanced, a generic Bomber with a couple of goodies, or a shuttle with a couple of goodies. I think The Inquisitor + Juke + TIE v1 would slot in really nicely, but of course that can't happen until the end of the year (or later).

ETA: And good luck at the Nationals!

You've convinced to give your version a try, but I'll probably use that last point for an intel agent on Echo as there will still be PS9-11 pilots abound and VI-brobot lists at 98 points probably won't disappear. Maybe I've grown overly-dependent on (and fond of) them, but they've served me well.

Yeah. I don't worry about Corran, because VI Corran doesn't get PTL, but VI Brobots at 98 points are a serious issue. And I do love Intelligence Agent.
