Gold Squadron K-wing (repaint)

By Quarrel, in X-Wing

The K-wing doesn't look like a Rebel ship to me. IMHO it's too clean, and the stock markings are uninspired. It also doesn't match any of its pilot cards. A repaint was in order!

Problem was, none of the K-wing pilot cards are a good inspiration. Miranda Doni is almost bare, and the two generics are featureless. Esege Tuketu is too tricky to freehand and doesn't look very Rebel-ish. I had to come up with something myself, so I loaded up a photo of the model after I primered it and played around in Photoshop until I found something I liked.

What I eventually decided on was inspired by the X-wing and Y-wing markings in the original trilogy.

I like it, close to the best scheme I have seen so far.The K-wing really lends itself to touch ups and repaints.

That's a nice classic touch. Good job. Would be nice to have some darker orange or yellows in there to move the eye i bit i think.

I was looking at the color wheel after you said that and I could also see a very small amount blue in there for contrast. What about painting one of the rebel symbols in orange or blue? Rodent mastermind posted a tutorial on freehand painting the rebel symbol if you are so inspired.

Finally, great paint job, you definitely breathed some new life into the miniature.

OP, you've done a great job. However.

I don't want to be a duck... But, one of the things that really helps the Y-Wing's color scheme pop and not look like an egg, is the blue canopy and other blue bits.

It's quite the mix of colors.

Stop self-adovocating we all paint our minis after you :P

Nice work!

:D

Very nice! Makes the K-wing fit right in with the classic ships from the movies!

Lemon Meringue K-wing. (the pie plate man)

I like it, looks good, would fit with gold.

If you want some critique i'd probably shade it a teensy bit more, give it a dirtier look. But that's a matter of taste I would suppose.

I will say though, that the K-wing demands some mind of microfine painting style to add B-17 type pinups to the sides.

There are blue chicken eggs, in fact. But thanks! I never actually looked at any high-detail studio pictures for Y-wings. Just Xs and TIEs. Time for some more photoshopping.

Really nice work! I especially like the panel lines and the little bit of rust detailing as well.

Love this! It's good to see Rebel ships that are a different color than red!

I've so far resisted repainting models, but the K-Wing does seem to call for it.

I really dig the OP's take on it, but if - IF - I was to repaint mine...I'm pretty sure I'd do the mod a lot of folks are doing, and cut off the ball turrent and stick it under the tail.

Turret just makes so much more sense on the back of a ship vs hanging off the front...

So would you cut off the Y-wing turret and stick it on the back too?

I quite like the turret at the front, it gives the craft a more 'offensive' look rather than a 'defensive' look

I too think the turret position is fine where it is. Lets face it, it's a beautifully ugly ship. I have three just for the look alone.

With that said, there's certainly room for it there - and a turret up front to shoot forwards anyway.

I think the turret in the back looks so much better, it also provides much better protection than in the front. If I were to play rebels I would do something like this to the front after removing the turret. This makes a lot more sense as the pilots have some weapons and then there is top and bottom protection from the turrets.

That's a B-25 Mitchell nose I believe...

As for the under-slung turret, if you look at the model you will find it actually has clear firing arcs 360' as well being able to fire above the pilots line of sight.

Its actually in the best location.

If it were aft it would only be able to fire to the rear.
