IMO, NO! XWing is one of, if not the cheapest hobby I have that I regularly involve myself!
Consider that in two years time, Ive purchased 89 ships, played in some tournaments and league and lots of casual play! My son has been there with me in everything except one tournament. I've laid out the cash for everything for both of us and bet I've spent less than $1,500 on the game itself, fees, gas and food!! Thats pretty cheap considering...
We both hunt, rifle, shotgun, nd bow, both shoot same things plus handguns, both do leatherwork AND both do Historical Miniature Wargaming!!
Start figuring the cost of guns, ammunition, hunting licenses, gas, food, clothes and other gear and I laugh at how cheap XWing is! The next two rifles we are looking at are about $1,500 EACH and then I need to buy mags, reloading components, optics, etc. Hence, I double the rifle price to get it setup! Thats $6,000 by the time we are ready to go!
Next spring I plan on getting a purebred Labrador Retriver puppy for bird hunting! That will be $500+ just for the pup!!! Vet bills, food, grooming, etc will run over $1,000 a year, while she is in good health! Vet bills get to be more as they get old...We just spent $1400 at the vet last week on our 13 yo dog!
My WWII miniatures are a lifetime investment! I buy LEAD and have over $1500 in Germans alone! I also have British Paras, some Soviets and my son has Early War French and American Airborne. We have about $2,000 in 15mm terrain.
I could go on, but I think you get the idea...
One of XWing's greatest benefits is how little you "have" to spend to play it!!! For less than $60, a guy can buy a Core Set and two expansion ships and run three ships at 100 pts! (purchasing online) You can spend whatever you want from there! Put things in perspective and XWing is definitely not expensive!!!
