Is XWing an expensive hobby???

By Plainsman, in X-Wing

IMO, NO! XWing is one of, if not the cheapest hobby I have that I regularly involve myself!

Consider that in two years time, Ive purchased 89 ships, played in some tournaments and league and lots of casual play! My son has been there with me in everything except one tournament. I've laid out the cash for everything for both of us and bet I've spent less than $1,500 on the game itself, fees, gas and food!! Thats pretty cheap considering...

We both hunt, rifle, shotgun, nd bow, both shoot same things plus handguns, both do leatherwork AND both do Historical Miniature Wargaming!!

Start figuring the cost of guns, ammunition, hunting licenses, gas, food, clothes and other gear and I laugh at how cheap XWing is! The next two rifles we are looking at are about $1,500 EACH and then I need to buy mags, reloading components, optics, etc. Hence, I double the rifle price to get it setup! Thats $6,000 by the time we are ready to go!

Next spring I plan on getting a purebred Labrador Retriver puppy for bird hunting! That will be $500+ just for the pup!!! Vet bills, food, grooming, etc will run over $1,000 a year, while she is in good health! Vet bills get to be more as they get old...We just spent $1400 at the vet last week on our 13 yo dog!

My WWII miniatures are a lifetime investment! I buy LEAD and have over $1500 in Germans alone! I also have British Paras, some Soviets and my son has Early War French and American Airborne. We have about $2,000 in 15mm terrain.

I could go on, but I think you get the idea...

One of XWing's greatest benefits is how little you "have" to spend to play it!!! For less than $60, a guy can buy a Core Set and two expansion ships and run three ships at 100 pts! (purchasing online) You can spend whatever you want from there! Put things in perspective and XWing is definitely not expensive!!!

I like how I can spent 15 bucks, get a ship and open it...and then literally throw it on the table and start playing pretty quickly. Its not like warhammer in any sense, which is where I came from. Now don't get me wrong I love the setting of WHF/40k but the cost and time consuming nature of learning the rules is a turn off. Plus the X wing models are pre painted and they actually look pretty darn good for what its worth.

As someone who comes from hobbies like Warhammer, Hell No! One of the main reasons I got into X-wing was it's low cost. Well, that and the ships, it's easy to learn, I don't have to cart five tons of models to the FLGS, and a dozen other reasons.

Yes it is.

If I could stop it wouldn't be.

Well, the question kind of has two answers here.

Is X-wing an expensive hobby? I would have to say yes. For me, it probably chews up $500AU a year, and that's a really conservative guess on my part. That's huge compared to my other hobbies.

But is X-wing expensive compared to other miniature games? No, it is really cheap when stacked up against the competition. But it's still not exactly kind to one's wallet.

Coming from Warhammer 40K to X-Wing makes it seem a hell of a lot cheaper thats for sure.

I always struggled keeping my army up to date and while I love painting the models eventually it just grates on you.

With pre-painted good looking models and an easy to learn but hard to master rules system X-Wing gets all my love and attention now. My missus and I own at least 1 of every ship which between the two of us I have bought the majority as she only collects Scum, compared to my old Necron 1000 pt army and 1000 pt Chaos Space Marines which probably cost me the same if not more and becomes bloody obsolete depending which edition you follow grrrr.

Soon as the TFA Core Set arrives in Australia, I'm buying two, one for the missus and one for me :)

Won't say its cheap but its the best minatures game I've seen price wise.

One can assume you live in the US then Plainsman, else this post would sing a slightly different tune.

Would that X-wing were as cheap here in Australia. The Core Set itself runs au$64, a single expansion can range been au$25 (X Y TIE etc) & au$32 (viper punisher etc).

To get that same basic 100pt list you're looking at over au$110. And that's just the gateway into this plastic crack habit.

Don't get me wrong, I love this game I just wish we didn't have to pay 250%+ of American prices for a product manufactured much closer to my doorstep than yours. There's a certain sense of irony in that knowledge I think.

If I Compare X-Wing to my other hobby, then I would say.

NO. :D

Ships are way cheaper then GW boxes for example.

But FFG has some "take-my-money" tricks too. We had a talk about cards lately like me buying kwing, i opened it took tlt and almost 2 days later i was like, hey maybe i should take that kwing out of the box? Or another guy told he bought 3 kihraxzs taking crack shots and doing the same:P

I do admit FFG has some tricks to get you to spend more than you planned, such as the aforementioned upgrade cards, but I look at the amount of fun I get out of "pewpewpew" and my little plastic ships :)

There's one problem with the opening: is it expensive? Could be, could be not. Is X-Wing a hobby? No, it's a life commitment :D

Yes, X-wing is quite expensive but it also depends what you want. For competitive play where you need lots of upgrades you need to throw lot's of money. For casual or when you gather one fraction it is manageable.

The cost of miniatures also differs around the world. In Poland we pay roughly 1,2$ more than in US. One must also take into consideration the relative cost of miniature to salary. E.g. Raider is about 10% of my salary, and I am slightly above the national average.

However, X-wing in comparison to WFB and WH40k (I also own a High Elves and Black Templars) turns out waaay cheaper.

I say no wife says yes

but she also thinks it costs to much of my time also

I have spent a lot on X-wing in the last 2 years. And the bulk of that was in last 8-12 months. But they are one off investments so they pay off in the long run. But here are some things I have noticed about prices etc

  • The fact that since the introduction of the scum and villainy faction there is always extra costs inured with every new wave.
  • Wave releases are relatively far apart but are announced very early seems to make people think they are buying 2 waves at once.
  • The introduction of the raider and new core set has boosted the cost of playing in the last few months.

  • People who want to play competitively will buy everything there is any way.

  • A new influx of players has caused a shortage in some ship types so dealers don't need to offer discount

It is a very social hobby and I have meet a lot of new people through playing

I say no wife says yes

but she also thinks it costs to much of my time also

Yeaaa there is that point I forgot to add :)

I pick my nose as a hobby, so yes.

Seriously pursuing a hobby is generally a costly proposition. Of the hobbies I've pursued...

-Competitive M:TG standard decks can cost up to $200-300. Eternal Formats significantly moreso. Non-vintage decks can be basically obsoleted by bannings or rotations.

-Wh40k's prices have climbed to comical levels. At least in the U.S., the price of ship Expansions has stayed constant.

-Dungeons and Dragons: Heh Heh Heh. Uh, a lot. Probably rivalling my X-wing collection's cost even though the books were significantly cheaper when I bought them then they are these days.

I said yes until I realized my girlfriend spend more than twice of what I did on X-Wing on her diving gear (that is maintenance, not even something new!). It always depends on what is the comparison. Of course X-Wing is expensive when compared to not spending money (duh), but when compared to other hobbys? Hell no.

All table top miniatures I think are a pricey hobby. However you are getting physical items instead of digital items so of course it is impossible to make it a free2play game like the kind you find from Blizzard or on steam. So the cost is well justified.

And yes X-wing is the cheapest game out of all the games within this hobby genre. Also there are more expensive hobbies out there (paintball for example).

Now you don't need more than $100 to start getting into X-wing standard games which is rather affordable but it can mount up pretty quick especially if you get at least 1 of every product.

So X-wing, sure it is not as expensive as other hobbies but that doesn't mean it is cheap either.

It's a salami hobby - each part is very thin, very small. But you can still eat enough to worry your doctor.

Compared to 40k this is nothing, and I collect waves at a time. If i were more selective then this'd be cheaper than my annual videogames budget.

Well what defines expensive? I wouldn't call it cheap but most dedicated hobbies eat up quite a bit of money and it's definitely on the cheaper end for minis games.

Compared to other miniature games no, and frankly compared to other hobbies like golf or airsoft it looks even better.

On its own merit I wouldn't say it's cheap but it's affordable enough. If you're buying at least 3 or 4 of every ship than yeah it can get expensive. Also FFG stuff in Asia (where I live) is generally on the expensive side.
