New Damage Deck

By Mind Robber, in X-Wing

I'm liking the improvements for damage deck included in The Force Awakens core set, obviously wanting one for each player in our group. FFG have done upgrade packs for other games before so will the deck be available to purchase separately?

No

That's a good point, a lot of people are saying "No" on the basis that they have never realeased a card only upgrade set. However they seem to totaly ignore that FFG have releaced plenty of small card only packs for other games. It's definitly a posibility I feel.

It's not impossible, but there's no precedent in X-wing, and there's no indication or suggestion that they're planning to do it. So the smart bet, if you're planning to enter or continue tournament play, is to pick up a new core set.

What I wOuld actually expect is that original core set reprint that had been listed since spring will include the new deck once it reaches shelves.

Except that they've explicitly established that they don't do 'updates' to older stock, even as far as updating the reference cards that come with them to reflect the new FAQs.

I'd love it if they did change it this time round... but I'll believe it when I see it.

It's looking like a no on the basis that they would most likely have announced it by now, especially seeing as it needs to be launched before the end of the year for tourny purposes.

I agree, plus x-wing creators have said multiple interviews that they will not have a cardboard only release.

That said, a damage deck would've worked just fine alongside the packs of dice they sell.

Ah, well.

I bet a lot of your friends will buy multiple new core sets. Give one of them $5 and get a new damage deck.

voila

Ah, well.

They might go that route, selling the new DD with a set of dice. We just don't know. Not a problem until January of 2016.

Just kindly direct any prospecting players to the new core set and consider the classic set as an expansion.

I'm not a big fan of the way everything is released but there is a heads up that the classic core set will be outdated in January and yes I know the models, pilots and upgrade cards will not be outdated but it won't act as a core set anymore having everything you need to play a game.

It would be more consumer friendly if they updated the classic set to 2.0 with the damage deck and 2nd edition rule booklet, or if not at least release a damage deck update kit separately. However there is no indication that is going to happen.

So if you wan't to get in tournaments next year get a Force Awakens Core set. The classic set is obsolete coming January 1, 2016.

Buy a new core set, get the new damage deck.

Then it also comes with a T-70 X-Wing, two First Order TIEs, new obstacles, the new Rules Reference Guide, and more... all for free!

Should be a 80's commercial anouncer

New Damage Deck for only $40 dollars, also includes free bonus stuff models and upgrades.

Two Autothrusters for only $20 (not sold separately), also comes with a free Star Viper!

I will be honest. These last few weeks have disheartened me towards that game I love.

While I understand the need to streamline some rather poorly worded cards, I hate the idea of having to buy two $40 sets that I don't want, just so that my wife and I can play in store tournaments next year.

Mixed with the less than stellar K-wing changes, the lack of named pilots or "must have" upgrades for the ep7 stuff, and my general ambivalence towards a scum-heavy wave 8 - I'm considering if anything, just simply making due with what I have now, and will probably sit this next wave out.

Just get decks from people you know that bought extra, or buy them separately. You can probably them them about 5$ each,or free. Even if you need to buy 2 core sets, get them at a wholesaler for about 25$ each...then for 50$ you get 6 ships, some upgrades, and 2 damage decks. If you can't afford 50$ then maybe you shouldn't be investing into luxury items like this game perhaps? Not trying to be offensive, just don't understand all the belly aching going on about the new damage deck.

I would be careful with E-bay though. There might be a bunch of damage decks for auction but they may come from the old set.

The problem with the way the new damage deck can be best seen with examples like the guy and his wife have to now buy 2 new core sets in order to play.

Or in my case, I bought 4 original core sets mostly for the damage decks so I can take my friends to the local tournaments with me. They enjoy the game, but did not want to invest in it because they have others things at the top of their list. One of my friends got armada, another got attack wing(mistake). But the point is we play all sorts of games together, and this one is my contribution to the group. Now I need to buy 3 cores more than I want(again)...purely for the damage decks.

In the end it is not a huge expense for a miniatures game, or for entertainment in general. But it still rubs some the wrong way after spending 600+ on a game and then being told you are required to spend more to keep playing.

Got 2 core sets, picked up one of the new ones on Disney's door buster midnight launch. Not picking up another core set of any kind.

I will buy a second damage deck if FFG sells it separately.

Exactly same situation here. I have so far bought at least one of everything FFG has brought out for X-Wing.

Since the ugly moves with the K-Wing and the new mandatory core set, I plan on skipping mostly everything from Wave 8, unless the Tractor Beam mechanics prove to be spectacularly fun AND survive all the way to release date without nerfs in the way. Only in that case I might consider getting a Mist Hunter, and only for the tractor beam. My romance with FFG came to an end.

These draconian practices by FFG are hitting a lot of players hard.

Maybe it's time to relax these policies of "b buy ships you don't want/need just to stay competitive."

A card pack or such could go a long toward keeping the customers happy and engaged.

Amen.

There is so much that could be achieved with a card pack by itself. So many broad fixs and changes to make x-wing a more varied and fun game just with some cheap cardboard. Like add a new update keyword so having one of a rebalanced card then copies it's effect onto all of the old cards you had of it. Many of the most common and recognizable cards are over costed [cough] proton torps [cough] and see very little use.

But apparently that's just wishful thinking from this young game designer.

inb4 "back in my day balance was something you did when your miniature was halfway of the board"

I jest

You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means.

2. (often lowercase) rigorous; unusually severe or cruel:

Luckily, I can read and comprehend the dictionary. It means exactly what it means, in the context I used it.

They only make a few new cards per wave how could you package that up in a set?

Would you not get any cards at all with ships then? So i'd now have to buy all the ships AND a card pack! That's more money!
