FFG updates Tournament Rules, Epic Tournament Rules docs to Version 3.2

By Danthrax, in X-Wing

I expect a post from frogy asking something along the lines of "but my ships is still on the table, why do we lose points for it, it's stupid" with way worse grammar and spelling.

From a game/tourny point it kinda mostly makes sense. For narrative, just disregard it entirely as you would most tourny specific rules.

What I fear with this is the opposite bad end of the spectrum. Someone running 3 interceptors puts damage on the large ship and then runs time out to win on points. This can't be good for the game either. We'll have to see how this actually plays out though. I don't doubt that some sort of fix was needed but I would have rather seen it applied to all ships.

Honestly I think it's dumbing the game down. I've never had a problem with Corran and Jake dropping big ships. IG's would probably be the hardest to burn down in 75 minutes. Even at gencon I had to play 5 large base ships out of 7 and none of those games went to time. Yeah you're putting a lot of points into a super ship but it still only has one attack. Most 2 ship lists fire 6 red dice as opposed to 12-15 red dice. If you get good at predicting where they are gonna be and taking into account of where they could boost to and also blocking them then they are very beatable.

Interceptors? They blow up if the pilot sneezes too hard. You have a point but interceptors risk getting blown up on the first pass. Falcons, Brobots and Decis don't run a risk of getting one-shot .

I would guess that Brobots were the driving force behind this rule change. Fat Han has been around for a while and yet the rule changes now. Brobots are a perfect storm for MOV abuse.

  • 3 agility
  • Autothrusters
  • Large Base Boost
  • Free evades upon boosting (sometimes)

As TLT begins to warp the meta I envisioned top 16's with 6-10 brobot lists. The list was just stupid strong in terms of MOV.

There are obviously pros and cons to any rule change. Firespray aces may be the biggest casualty here but all-in-all, this is a positive and maybe a necessary change.

Their sheer number of upgrade slots combined with their large number of hit points leverages the nature of a timed game to make them more effective than they would be otherwise...

Just wondering...

As a casual player who plays with his friends without using tournament rules (time/point scoring), is this a good time time to introduce these rules or are these stacked large ships balanced when there is an "unlimited" time limit so to speak?

Is this FFG subtly admitting decked out Large ships are overpowered or is this all about the time limit concern during tournaments?

It's about a metagame advantage that comes from tournament time limits and scoring rules. If you're playing casually/at home, and you only end games when someone gives up or runs out of ships, then you don't need to worry about it.
