When is a Scyk too expensive?

By Sanguinary Dan, in X-Wing Squad Lists

What is the point of diminishing return on a Scyk? It's obscenely fragile. TIE fighter fragile for easily twice the cost if you go Heavy Scyk. But you get a cannon or missiles or rockets! Argh!! But the idea of a little, tiny, toy fighter with a heavy laser or mangler cannon? Sexy. Of course the arrival of TFTs kinda hurts. But against Imperials and non-TFT lists it just sounds so appealing.

Is it just a cool looking model with no real use? Is it really just a cheap blocker with worse stats than a Z-95? Am I hurting myself by giving it upgrades?

Some think the Scyk is too expensive as soon as the Heavy Scyk title is added. I prefer mine with the Mangler. A fun build is 4 TPV with engine upgrade and PTL. Not necessarily competitive but fun.

The Scyk IS very fragile, so if you invest lots of points into it, you are basically building a glass cannon list. This sort of list can work, but its very punishing if you make any mistakes. I find HLC is the best partner on the Scyk. Go big or go home, basically. The mangler simply does not deal enough damage sometimes (well, if dice go cold, the HLC can have a similar problem). To help keep offense high, I like to run Tansarii Point Vets with predator and HLC. At that point, they are so expensive, there's no reason not to stick a hull or shield on them. 32 or 33 points is a lot, but man can it hit like a truck. A pair of those plus a 3rd ship that hopefully draws as much (ideally more) aggro from your opponent and then your Scyks have a chance to fire a few rounds before dying. The nice thing is, they deal so much damage, they don't have to live long. If an HLC deals about 3 damage to a large ship (after defense), 4 shots and most are either dead or close to it. With 2 such ships, that's only 2 rounds of shooting. So if said large ship doesn't destroy one of those scyks in 2 rounds, its going to be dead because you also have a 3rd ship in there dealing damage...

It's to expensive before you add card to it sadly, you pay 2 points for a shield instead of 1 hull and for the target lock action. Two things that you barely use with the interceptor. I think ffg designed themself into a corner with the scyck because they already gave scum the z-95 for 12-13 points so the scyck had to be more expensive and flexible but then they made the title 2 points as well.

So you pay 2 extra points for the ship and then 2 extra for the option of putting on a cannon on a ship that will be easily taken down. Tansarii point veteran with PTL and HLC comes at 29 points, the same price as wedge and just a little cheaper than powerful soontir and jake builds.

Nah ffg really screwed up this time IMO, drop 1 points on all pilots and 2 on the point veteran and maybe drop a point from the title as well and I think the scyck could have a place.

Point veteran with mangler and PTL or lone wolf or serissu with a stealth device or hull upgrade is probably the only two builds I would take.

I love my Scyks. Stealth device and Serissu provide better defense; although it still can't take a hit, it is suddenly very good at dodging those hits. Stick swarm tactics on Serissu, and you suddenly have two PS8 ships with 3 attack dice (assuming "Mangler" cannon) and 4 defense dice (with 1 re-roll). I don't know if I would take all Scyks, but this tactic seems to work for me.

Try to kill this. 5 (Serissu) and 4 green dices and 1 reroll just for start against any of them.

With the dawn of TLTs Laetin A'Shera is suddenly very appealing

Scyks are always too expensive.

Over 20 points with defence added is overdone. Possible exception for 23 point HLC.

Stealing this. Prolly going to downgrade TPV to Kaa'to Leeachos to free up some points and put Laetin in there. If opponent wants to shoot at Kaa'to, that's fine by me. Extra evade dice on the body guard are wasted points IMO.

I normally run Serissu with a Bodyguarding Guri with Talonbane or a IG of some sort. I hardly ever put the title on Serissu though. I save my points to upgrade the heavy hitter.

The Scyk was poorly thought out. For 2 points, the title should add a hull.

List of 0 cost title.png that add an upgrade slot:

torpedo.png Slave I

bomb.png Andrasta

system.png TIE/x1

modification.png Royal Guard TIE

talent.png A-Wing Test Pilot

Other titles that add an upgrade icon:

system.png,illicit.png Virago title.png for 1 point

Really, they can save face making new title card, because we know they won't change the pilots. They already changed the cloak action card.

An extra hull would bring it in line with the TIE/FO. 16 points for a 3 hull 1 shield fighter with PS 2 compared to the TIE's PS at 15. It has a weaker dial, but can take cannon upgrades. Now if the title also added the illicit slot, it would be a serious contender for the <20 point filler choices.

for 20 points you could grab

Ion cannon + Inertial Dampeners,

Flechette cannon + Glitterstim

or "Mangler" cannon

It was too expensive the minute they printed a number larger than zero in the bottom right of the title card. Two points for shield vs. hull and target lock plus the option to equip one of three secondary weapons would've probably been ok, but not four.

Compare to TIE/FOs for 1 point more *sigh*

yeah, they're even too expensive for me at 14

13 for a PS 1 would've been ideal

which sucks, because now scum has the YV-666 for brutal intelligence agent shenanigans but no cheap fodder to effectively abuse it with rolls or boosts

Fickle, try this.

I'm no top table stud, but this may work:

Razzi: Intel Agent, K4, Weapon Engineer

TPV: Title, HLC, Hull Upgrade, Crackshot

TPV: Title, HLC, Hull Upgrade, Crackshot

While the vets don't have focus and TL/predator, you can knock down enemy agility two ways. Agent enables BR.
