First time playing Organized Play List help

By manyallaluk, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I am going to be playing in my first Organized Play tournament. And I needed some help with a list. The lists I have the most experience flying are below.

----
“Echo” [Recon Specialist, Fire-Control System, Determination, Advanced Cloaking Device] (40)
“Howlrunner” [swarm Tactics] (20)
Obsidian Squadron Pilot (13) x 3
----
&
----
Jan Ors [Predator, Ion Cannon Turret, Nien Nunb, Moldy Crow] (37)
Blue Squadron Pilot [Fire-Control System, Heavy Laser Cannon] (31) x 2
----

The player base is a mix of casual and experienced players. I have not had time to feel out the meta at the store since wave 6 or Force Awakening dropped. Any advice for these lists or others?

Almost forgot I don't have a complete set of x-wing, I also have a few cards from expansions I don't own.

core set x1

A-wing

B-wing

Hwk

Rebel Aces

Millennium

Rebel Transport

Tie exp x2

Tie interceptors

Lambda

Tie Phantom

I highly recommend dropping Determination for Veteran Instincts on Echo if you want to use Advanced Cloaking Device. Then I'd drop your Obsidians down to Academy Pilots mostly out of personal preference, but having TIE Fighters get blocked is very frustrating and can often be a death sentence.

This will leave you with 4 points. You could either:

- Change Fire Control System and Recon Specialist for Sensor Jammer and Gunner, which will do well against quite a few targets but will make Echo take up a massive number of points.

- Drop Swarm Tactics for Push the Limit on Howlrunner, and bump the Academy Pilots back up to Obsidians. Not much of a change if you'd like to fly something very similar to what you've previously flown.

- Strip off all the upgrades except Veteran Instincts and Advanced Cloaking Device on Echo, and add a naked Omicron Group Pilot. This adds a considerable amount of health to your list, and really diversifies what might be a hard counter to you.

My suggestion is the last option, but feel free to flavor this to your taste.

Thanks Radbid! I'm interested in 1st and 3rd options. I like smaller ships but the lambda should helps against other large ships. Question: For the 3rd option I need to remove the 2 upgrades and a Tie to squeeze in the Lambda? Also how will both options list hold up to the new Tie/FO fighters?

Lastly is there any way to make a rebel Hwk remotely competitive?

I really like your "Jan has the Blues" list, if it's one you're experienced with. It's a little bit old-school, but might catch some people off-guard, and there's a lot to be said for flying a list you're comfortable with. I would suggest some slight tweaks though, since you have the cards:

I think Predator is a bit misplaced on Jan because she's not really there to dish out damage herself so much as support your other ships. The way I fly her is with Swarm Tactics (so your Bs can shoot that nasty HLC sooner), Blaster Turret (so that you have a CHANCE of doing more than 1 damage a turn), Kyle Katarn and Moldy Crow (so that you're constantly stockpiling Focus tokens for your turret and defense). Comes in at 99 points with your FCS and LHC Blues.

You concede that Jan is going to be doing nothing but green maneuvers all game, but in exchange one of your Bs gets to roll 5 dice with no range modifiers (as you well know from flying this list) but now it's at PS 8!

And again, I'm all about taking a list that might be slightly suboptimal for your meta if you just have lots of experience with it.

Nice to hear from another Jan fan. I like the idea of Swarm Tactics it is a great match. In the past I feel that as I accumulate enough focus in the early game and Niem Nunb makes her a little more mobile that I can do without kyle. I want to try twin-laser turret on Jan at some point as it keeps her well away from the enemies while still providing some fire power.

Edit: FuturistiKen do you find keeping Jan at Range 1 for Swarm Tactics reduce her lifespan?

Hasn't been my experience at all, so long as I fly my Bs well - twelve red dice between Jan and the two Bs is a lot of firepower, and sometimes the best defense is a good offense! And if you have TLTs, totally give them a try on Jan! You can start dishing out damage while bad guys are still at range 3, and with Nien Nunb opening up the dial for your build I think you'll do just fine keeping Jan alive long enough to make her worth her points.

No problem at all, and public math is dangerous. The squad I'm thinking of will look more like this:

"Whisper" (32)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

Omicron Group Pilot (21)

"Howlrunner" (18)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

Total: 100

As for the Hawk, I have next to 0 experience with them. There are a bunch of people with great experiences on this forum though, so I'll leave it to them instead.

In the end I went with a jan list. I felt nervous about flying the shuttle against palatine shuttles. Unfortunately another store scheduled their x-wing tourney on the same day so we were at an awkward odd number of people. But I placed third. Thank you both for you input!
