Or is the docking and deploying just a gameplay mechanic, akin to the Hound's Tooth and Z-95.
So are the Ghost and Phantom shuttle miniatures going to physically connect together in some way?
I suspect they'll connect. Just got this feeling, no proof.
If you look at the Ghost it shows the Phantom docked on the miniature. They'll be separate pieces that cannot combine. I'm sure someone will find a way to modify things.

Interesting.
Not being familiar with the ship as portrayed in the show, I note the inherent hazard of a ship docked right between the engine nozzles, presumably deploying in a trajectory that leads it right between the exhaust plumes.
If this is the case, wouldn't it make thematic sense for the Ghost's engines to have to shut down all thrust while the shuttle deploys? So, would a reasonable game mechanic involve the Ghost having to take a 1-straight (a la the ioned drift effect) on the activation round that the shuttle deploys? Just a speculation.

Are you bringing LOGIC and ACTUAL SCIENCE into a discussion about Star Wars!?!??! Next you'll be questioning the legitimacy of laser swords and space wizards....
The Phantom docks and deploys from the Ghost when both are flying around all the time. I believe they've docked mid-dogfight in the Season 2 premiere. I don't think engine exhaust burn in Star Wars is a thing.
It did very carefully have to dock in the Siege of Lothal opening battle, it seems to have a narrow "pipe" in which to do so.
They can always "Let off the gas" for the 5 seconds it takes for the Phantom to get clear.
Also I don't expect the two ships will physically link into each other - however I expect the modding community will enable this feature within 5 minutes of getting their hands on it.
The picture shows it connected but I wonder if its a trick and they will be 2 bits that can join up. Not wishful thinking just a small suspicion thatbit would make a great prestige for the individual article.
If you look at teh upcoming page of ffg there is the box of the ghost displayed and there you see both ships and the phantom also is docked to the ghost so i dont think they connect

It was in X-wing vs TIE fighter... but then the Star Destroyer's engine's put out ridiculously more heat and energy than the ghost's engines... and in XvT, your shields blocked the damage before your hull did, so if engine exhaust damage was a thing, then everything except some of the TIE series wouldn't be affected.

Any what is the problem with laser swords and space wizards?
How do these not make sense?
I plan to take my son's LEGO set of the Phantom and Ghost, and use that as a replacement when they are docked...
Now if I can just figure out how to get it to stay on this little plastic peg, you'd think FFG would have made it a little bigger
They won't - you can see the Phantom docked in the model, with the twin guns sticking out the back of the Ghost. And you can see that the space it occupies is too small for the accompanying Phantom miniature to fit it. That's because, if I remember Rebels right, the wings on the shuttle retract when it is docked and then extend from the sides of the hull when it launches.
And if you think they not only engineered the Phantom to dock with the Ghost, but engineered retractable wings for the Phantom, you're a beautiful dreamer.

The prototype of the Ghost has a different stand than the standard pole.
The Phantom fits into the Ghost both forward and backward, but by all accounts personnel cannot go between them unless the Phantom is backed in. The forward docking seem to just be for emergencies, like hyper jumps.

I believe damage from engine exhaust was invented sometime after the battle of Yavin. It was created in order to prevent a single fighter aircraft from flying right up to the engine exhaust of a star destroyer (outside the arc of it's guns), matching it's speed, and pewpewing away with impunity until the Star Destroyer was gone.
If you don't believe me, just play the X-wing series of games for PC.
The phantom deployed while in lightspeed in one episode....it was a rough flight but it did it.

The crew can transfer from the Phantom to the Ghost with either end docked. The bottom hatch is positioned in the middle of the ship. As for docking while the Ghost is moving at speed? It can be done as was shown in the episode Breaking Ranks when Kanan docked with the Ghost, which was moving at full speed, as they were fleeing the shockwave of an exploding Kyber Crystal.
I'm still trying to figure out why ships in SW always have their engines thrusting. Are they accelerating the whole time? They don't need to create lift in space, and even in atmosphere the repulsors are keeping the ship aloft.
But then applying logic to ship design in SW is a futile exercise. Rule of cool is all that applies.

That's not true.
I wouldn't think that the two would fit together simply because it will cause too much wear on the models. X-Wing minis are fairly sturdy for as delicate as they are, and the paint is fairly robust too, but docking and launching the Phantom over and over is going to strip off paint and start wearing off wing detail pretty quickly.

I doubt they fit together, but I imagine it is more due to cost. Now if I played rebels I absolutely would magnetize them and dock/undock all the flipping time. You may have to repaint occasionally, but with a matte sealant it should be fine, besides if the paint scuffs it adds some character (and the docking coolness factor far outweighs scuffed paint). When I get my Gozanti I will have to magnetize it so I can dock my fighters

The Gozanti is already capable of carrying fighters. We know that. It was in the announcement.
All my fighters are magnetized, so I will have to magnetize the gozanti if I want them to dock, as they can't go on normal pegs anymore.
