Epic Anyone?

By zhentil, in X-Wing

Takes too ******* long. Game mechanics get really tedious and meh at larger scale, not better.

Let's say I totally agree with this - why, then, does Spike play 40k?

That depends. any comment about xwing game mechanics youd like to bestow on us mortals?

When you're done, you can also explain 40k, cuz I've never played it, nor at higher levels.

Also, isn't Spike the tournament competitive lover of Magic archetypes? Which means he's usually actually adverse to Epic. The heavily competitive tournament winners in our area hate epic and have only played like 2 games of it ever in 2 years.

Lastly, can you explain why your non sequiturs between my comment, then to your "agreement" then to your begging the question, has any sort of logical leap that's supposed to be sound?

Epic is not for Spike...

But I love Epic.

Played my first Epic game on Sunday. We had 2 four man teams each with 300pts on a 3x12 board. It was carnage. Great fun though. I think we over did it a bit as 8 hours got us about 5 turns into the game. I'd really like to play more Epic; just with less players at once. It brings a totally different way of moving and thinking about strategy and I got to fly my CR90 and GR75 for the first time. Have to give Imps a go next and use the Raider.

I ran:

CR90 w/ weapons engineer, Han crew, Ion cannon battery, 2x quad laser batteries, engineering team, sensor team

GR75 w/ slicer tools, Duty Free tittle and Frequency Jammer

gold w/ r2a and tlt

2x blues w/fcs

1x rookie w/r2a

1x bandit

Looking forwards to more games of Epic soon!

I played my first epic game this past Saturday with three of my friends. We really loved the higher level of pre-game strategy and the in-game tactics that epic provided over the standard 100 point dog fight. We all agreed that a team epic tournament scene would be awesome. I feel that the 100 point format scaled up really well into epic and I can't wait to play it again!

I'm not sure about an epic tournament. I feel like it will just get to be hyper competitive and a few people will find "those things" that crush all the other epic lists. Then, you end up with "never take xyz as they suck" when you talk about Epic. I worry it will just create a meta for epic when right now it's wide open.

I think it's harder to come up with a real gamechanger, like Fat Han or ACD Whisper in epic play, because if all else fails, you can still concentrate fire with as many ships as possible. So the best strategy will probably be to field many ships, either as many as possible or with a few choice support ships. Maybe fielding a huge ship might prove to be not a very good idea, and if one huge ship becomes mandatory, it could turn out that the GR75 is the best choice, just to free up some points.

An epic tournament scene might not be very interesting if it degrades into huge swarms of TIEs against 4 brobots+some small fighters against whatever is the most efficient rebel swarm, and no huge ships.

Whereas in casual play, players are more likely to try combos with the huge ships.

I found that massed Tie Interceptors and/or Tie Phantoms can really hurt Epic. So many shots with high agility usually means death for an epic ship.

EDIT: Yes, and FCS HLC Daggers (thanks Admiral Deathrain).

FCS HLC Daggers are pretty evil I heard.

I am not entirely sure how well the Raider deals with small ships as I haven't seen it in play yet. If it is a serious threat then Corvettes might enter the game just to hunt Raiders. Both factions (with epics) have slightly abusive ways to boost huge weapons, the CR-90 with Esege and the Raider with Jonus, so I wouldn't rule out huge ships in epic tournaments per se.

I've only played one game of Epic so far, but it was great fun! Shameless plug here, but I made a thread in the Battle Reports section linking to my write-up (https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/186751-epic-game-800pts-per-side-empire-vs-rebels/).

Next time we play we are going to have a 3v3 300pts each, with at least one huge ship per side (probably enforce it being the larger of the huge ships, i.e CR-90 vs Raider).

A 1000 (10 times over normal game) epic game will probably last a lot less than a 2000 point (standard game) game of 40k. With a lot less rules arguments and boring wait time.

Epic is fine. Especially in the 3-600 area.

We just had an Epic explosion in our area.

Since the Raider came out, we had 1 epic game every month occuring (give or take).

One guy posted on our Facebook group if someone wanted to play Epic and suddenly, 9 people volunteered. We'll have over 5 epic games happening tonight. I can't wait to see the store owner's face when we all come out with our stuff. It will be hilarious :P

I never played the campaigns in the booklets, but the one for the Raider looks really neat. I think it might help me learn the ship. I should probably go back and learn the CR-90 one, too.

The Raider can deal with small ships pretty well in the right circumstances. I had Chewie end up in the horrible place where all the arcs overlap. 1 round of concentrating fire with all of its weapons and the Raider killed Chewie outright. I'm not convinced the CR90 is good at dealing with small ships so is probably better for exactly that role of anti-raider. Load up with Sensor Team and long range weapons and try to broadside it whilst you pummel it with a ton of b-wings.

The CR-90 can get a TL and boost it's damage to 5 red dice at R 3-5. That's pretty nice. I've seen people using Jan Ors to boost that attack to 6 red dice. That's pretty anti-small ship if you ask me.

It also depends on what the small ships are. Imperials have a lot of 3 Agility ships, which makes Single Turbo Laser not the best thing to use. Still, I've killed X-wings with those things....even with the double agility.

Quad Turbo Lasers are good vs. small ships. If you miss, spend 1 energy to attack again. The CR-90 should have at least one of these, if not more. It all depends if you want to be well rounded or great for the long range.
