bossk crew clarification

By churchwarden, in X-Wing

Just wondering. I did a little search around but couldn't find a concise ruling. Does bossk crew trigger even if you are already stressed?

Tnx in advance?

"If you are not stressed"

There you go, no need to worry about double stressing yourself.

Yes, however, you don't gain a stress if you are already stressed.

Also, say you have gunner on your ship with the Bossk crew card, and miss the second shot as well. Bossk will trigger again, even though you can't shoot a third time...

The phrase, "if you are not stressed" indicates that RAI is that he does not trigger at all if you have a stress token. This is similar to how R7-T1 requires you to be at range 1-2 of a ship and in it's firing arc to do anything (And not, as I originally thought, letting you boost if there was an enemy at range 1-2 and acquire a target lock if you were in arc of that enemy before boosting).

I'm aware the syntax lends itself to a different interpretation, though, but the precedent with R7-T1 suggests Bossk does not trigger when stressed.

Well this question rose already a while ago and a friend of mine asked Frank Brooks directly and here is what he replied:

btw its exactly the same as R7-T1 and Accuracy Correctors are worded and to be played.

You can boost with him if you're at R1-2 of an opponent's ship, even if you're not in arc to perform the TL. Bossk does follow the precedent of R7-T1 that allows you do second part even if you cannot do the first part.

R7-T1 FAQ;

"If a ship equipped with R7-T1 is at Range 1–2 and inside the firing arc of an enemy ship, the following sequence occurs: the ship equipped with R7-T1 may acquire a target lock on the enemy ship. Then, the ship equipped with R7-T1 may perform a free boost action, even if it did not acquire a target lock on the enemy ship."

So, R7-T1 is all or nothing with it's requirements. Kind of Strange that Bossk isn't, though.

Conditions for the card to use: Red

Actions: Green

Additional Requirement: Blue

R7-T1:

Action: Choose an enemy ship at Range 1-2. If you are inside that ship's firing arc, you may acquire a target lock on that ship. Then, you may perform a free boost action.

to clarify R7-T1 we look deeper into it:

Action: Choose an enemy ship at Range 1-2. (If you are inside that ship's firing arc, you may acquire a target lock on that ship.) Then, you may perform a free boost action.

The bold and underlined part is a complete standalone sentence which is resolved on its own after picking a ship in range 1-2.

The non bold part is your action that you can do if an enemy ship is in range only!

Continue with

Bossk:

After you perform an attack that does not hit, if you are not stressed, you must receive 1 stress token. Then assign 1 focus token to your ship and acquire a target lock on the defender.

so here the IF-clause is in the same sentence as the condition. So it just makes clear that you have a stress at all costs after resolving this ability! And then your action is to get a TL and a focus token.

Tnx.

Makes bossk immune to r3a2

Thats actually pretty good. I should have more respect for YVs, I guess. Huge R3-A2 fan here.

I think it would've been much more clear if this was the wording:

Bossk:

After you perform an attack that does not hit, assign 1 focus token to your ship and acquire a target lock on the defender. Then if you are not stressed, you must receive 1 stress token

Just for future forum searchers: the 3.2.1 FAQ covers this explicitly, starting that Bossk's focus/target lock effects happen even if you start stressed.

Bossk crew basically guarantees that you're always stressed. Which means it pairs really well with Wired.

Frustratingly, I can't find any Scum ships (other than Bossk himself) that have 2 crew slots and an EPT slot. I guess Crew!Bossk + Gunner + Wired would be a terrifying combination.
