Is anyone else feeling a little cynical about the Disneyfication of X-Wing?

By Darth Ruin, in X-Wing

I have faith in JJ Abrams ability to make a Star Wars movie. My reasons for said faith in that while he clearly can't do "star trek" his Star Trek films were very warsy.

I have faith in FFG's ability to keep making Star Wars Games. My reasons for said faith is all over FFG's site, and in the games of x-wing I play. I'd play Assault but too lazy to paint all the minis. I'd play armada but spending all my monies on x-wing, Armada is pretty expensive.

I have faith in Disney's ability to make smart business choices based on the franchises fans which keep both their accountants and (us) the consumers happy. My reasons for this are history. We know they can, we've seen this in the toy series that exist, we've seen this in disneys other universes including Marvel. They can do it, they've done it before, they'll do it again. Hate the mouse all you want, they do what they do well.

At the worst, TFA will be like Episode 3, action packed but full of holes/poor acting here and there/punching the EU in the face a few times.

At the best, a new golden age of Star Wars.

Really, the weak links so far are Hasbro - TFA toys thus far released notoriously poor quality.

and - EA - For being EA. Dice might do a good job on Battlefront, i'm not convinced either way. I'll buy the game, but I don't expect a masterpiece..

For one....I refuse to believe that Disney will kill the sacred cow with Star Wars. They just spent a lot of money on it and will not make a bad film. Next, they just have to make an OK movie for it to be a hit.

Er... spoilers for a nigh-80-year-old novel, I guess?

look what happened to pirates of the Caribbean ..... please don't do that to Star wars

I'm sorry. For me, J. J. Abrams destroyed Star Trek completely and utterly. I'm a big fan of the original series and an even bigger fan of Next Generation.

I fear Star Wars Episode 7 will be like Star Trek ....

No, I agree with you. J.J. Did mess up star trek.

That's why I am sure he'll do a good Star Wars.

Analyze into Darkness. play some scenes in your head.

Mentally think of them as scenes from a star wars film, and you'll see they fit. I'll wait.

I think JJ Abrams is the one in the prophecy. He's the chosen one that will bring back balance to the franchise.

That's funny to me as his movies are the only Star Trek ones I like!

JJ only destroyed Star Trek as much as the owners allowed him to destroy it (which I don't think he did, I think the crew he got together was an excellent reimagining of the original cast including the chemistry between the lead three).

"Purists." Lol.

Sorry, OP, but I think you're seeing Disneyfication where none exists. Heavy merchandising has been the Star Wars business model for longer than I've been alive; Disney didn't suddenly introduce it with Wave 8 of X-wing. Moreover, FFG has done a good job with the game, and I think they'll continue to do so.

Yeah ... maybe they figured out that there are more non-Trekkies.

You mean, how they made an unexpectedly awesome and financially successful comic/horror/action movie?

Yeah ... maybe they figured out that there are more non-Trekkies.

Funny, I like his movies better than some (most) of the original timeline movies, some of which were utter drek. I've seen all series, most of them during their original run where you had to stay at home at certain times of the week just to be able to see them.

My wife *hates* all the original Star Trek franchise. She will eagerly watch the reboot. So yes, they're entirely going after the non-fanboy market. Besides, fanboys gonna hate. It's the simple math of reboots.

Many people like movies whose story exist to connect special-fx scenes and is not of further importance.

This. Lucas himself re-wrote vast portions of RotJ to improve toy sales. Apparently, from the comments from the producers at LFL that I read, Lucas was earning something like 5x as much from toy sales as from the movies. So he dropped the whole aggressive Wookie-focused battle with Han dying and Luke wondering off into the sunset, and instead made it the kid/toy friendly Ewok battle where everyone lived happily ever after. Because... toys.

Which also made a better movie...

One thing I've noticed about the last decade and a half or so. When the good guys win there are always some sometimes forced overly tragic losses. Wash from firefly being one of the best examples.

Disney bought it to make money.... they will merchandise the hell out of it. But as long as they keep the movie standards high I'm happy with that

And for reasons you have also provided - it is in their best interests to do so. We know it,they know it.

* - backflips of joy not guaranteed.

I don't think the Abrahms Star Trek films are bad films (I don't think they're great either, but to be fair, we can argue whether or not the Original Trilogy actually manages to reach that bar). I do agree, however, that they're not really Star Trek films because the films don't capture the hope for the future that made the original Star Trek series what it was.

However, I agree with DariusAPB- Much of what Abrahms did should work well in the Pulp-inspired, spectacular nature of Star Wars.

That's a trope as old as storytelling, though. It's a clichė so well-worn that The Simpsons did a gag about how tired it was in Season 2.

Star Trek films today = Logic and Story replaced by special effects and action scenes.

Seems like ppl can't get enough of special effects and action scene movies.

Star Wars today = ?

I expect the worst so I can't be disappointed.

Not sure if this is exactly the same thing, but I'm totally meh for the new Core Set, T70 and FO right now.

Seriously, they're not capturing my interest for some unknown reason, and I can't particularly pinpoint why.

I'm really looking forward to the Mist Hunter, Punishing One and the Gozanti, but every other upcoming release?

Maybe it's a simple matter of not having seen Rebels or The Force Awakens yet. I don't know.

There is some real truth in this.

Consider one of the first 'mechandising' tricks back when ANH was fresh was selling kids an empty cardboard box!

(im referring to the 'early bird' chance to spend money on the first few action figures that hadnt actually been produced at that point, also to buy 'characters' that would be on screen for two seconds and not actually do anything.. hammerhead anyone?)

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

True to some extent. I think it's more the good parts where Trek actually met it's potential being remembered while a lot of mediocre chaff being forgotten (On the other hand, the fans haven't forgotten what happened with Voyager, Nemesis, etc, so it's not like they're blind).
