Painting R2-D2 figure. Weird model

By Elrath', in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Has anyone else noticed that the R2 model of the game has a weird slot below the eye? But in all the pictures I've found there should be a blue panel there with a red light.

I painted the red light on my R2 like the slot wasn't there but part of the light is in the slot and doesn't show well as a result:

So, does anyone know if this is unintentional, part of the molding process or was R2 like that at some stage of filming the original movies?

No it is there, see:

Do you mean right below the black lens?

Because I know there's a slot in the main body above the two arm compartments. But I meant in the head. The model has a slot where the red light should be.

The blue areas on the "head" would be impossible to paint, if they were not either slots or raised areas. Raised areas might have been easier to paint but may be more difficult to cast.

It's also weirdly tall

Yeah, I was thinking that too. The depressions in the model follow pretty much the blue markings on the head. But I was just wondering about the slot below the lens. Perhaps that was meant to be the whole blue area with the red light but came as a bit too deep and narrow. And I realize there are minimum sizes for the walls etc. for the molding process.

I was just a bit bummed by it since the red light is an important recognizable detail of R2s "face" but it was hard to paint on decently because of the "slot".

Where the main, big, black eye lens is, is on a raised blue section. There is a very thin slot in that blue section just below the actual lens, kinda like a CD player(as best to describe it). There is no big black slot under that blue section. The pics above are showing the shadow cast by the raised blue section. The other large slot is on the main body just above the 2 blue arms in the top center, just below the dome.

Oh, okay. That clears it up a lot. So, maybe they were trying to cast that into the model. Thanks.

If you've ever seen a full sized R2 in person, he's way bigger than you expect.

We have unambiguous sources for his height relative to other characters, you don't need to see him in person.

Fair, and Threepio isn't very tall he's like 5'6" but R2 is almost 4 feet.

They did have to fit Kenny Baker in R2 don't forget.

Still, R2 comes up to about the bottom of Threepio's chest plastron in mazz0's photo. I realize that the perspective is skewed, but the mini looks much taller compared to the Threepio mini in Elrath's photo. Can anyone shed some more light?

When filming the original films, they had 2 R2s with one being the version Baker controlled and walked about and the other was a remote controlled one that could drive around. I don't know if they were the same size.

Then when filming the new episodes (I-III), they had 12 R2 models in total.

Maybe that's why? And it could also be that FFG's R2 is bigger so that they could make all the details. I bet the plastic they use for the figures sets some limitations.

He's a growing boy. Astromech's don't reach physical maturity until they 60 standard years old.
