Hound's Tooth wing removal pics
Interesting. How easy was this to do? I recall some people had trouble storing their YV-666, and this looks like it could be an easy fix if it can be done without damaging the model or compromising the model's appearance on the tabletop.

Yeah. I'm quite definitely a non-expert, but I think even I could magnetize that for storage...
It wasn't bad at all, once I figured out that the only place I needed to pry (with a utility knife) was the back of the central mounting point. I messed up the paint in a very minor way trying to pry under the side brackets of the wings, thinking they were glued. They aren't. The wings will actually pop right back on the mounting pegs and are pretty sturdy; I might just keep doing that until the pegs break, at which time I will magnetize.
This thread pleases me greatly =). Plano Boxes for life!
Do you think you could mount a Z95 on there in place of the wings? Perhaps in between them?
Was there glue at the back to cut through? I am worried about scratching it up trying to pry it up with a hobby knife.
You can also split the YV-666 where the tail section meets the main body. Just takes about 20 minutes of wiggling and a little bravery!

This connection just seems so much more durable, I couldn't imagine doing it another way.

I would try two Lambdas and a Starviper.

No glue, but there was a small rectangular peg (I believe this is all that mechanically connects the wings to the hull) that you have to cut through/pry apart. The broken base of this peg is visible in my pictures behind the rearmost hole in the round center portion of the wing assembly. I think there's a fair chance of some minor marring of the paint unless you're incredibly careful.

Did this and it worked like a charm!!
Thanks for taking that bold step.
FYI, I got mine to the same state just with some careful wiggling and a lot of care. No tools should be necessary.
Did anybody freeze their's first? I've read a few posts where a couple of guys did the freezer trick! I was thinking about freezing mine accordingly.

For curiosity which state did you get yours to, the back end off or just the wings and centerpiece like in the first pics?
I took the wing off like the first person. And out of habit, I froze it first, but I'm not sure that had any impact. I managed to split mine down the middle, but a dab of glue and you can never tell. Unlike the original poster though, I did not break off the locating tab (on the first picture, you can see it to the right of the two poles, around the brownish part on the gray paint).
The plan was to magnetize it, but the piece fit so well that i just sanded down the posts, and let the locating tab, along with the friction fit of the two sides to hold it in place during game play. It works great. And if I wear it down too much, I can always revisit the idea of magnetizing it.
Edit: No tools necessary. I just applied upward pressure on each wing alternating between the two. I'd recommend doing it as close to the ship as possible to minimize the chance of snapping the two wings in half.
Edited by KhyrosNow that you've posted how it disassembles, I can see a way to make the fins rotate to the landing position!
Who is up for the challenge?!
I am receiving my first YV-666 soon and might give it a shot.
