Multiple Target Locks and Spending

By Rocmistro, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello! I have to believe this question has come up before, but I can't seem to find it, so, here goes.

-If you have the ability to maintain multiple target locks on 1 or multiple ships (for example: Weapons Engineer) AND you declare the use of ordnance (for example: Advanced Proton Torps) for your attack, can you discard the Target Lock that is not applied to the ship you're currenlty targeting for ordnance?

Example:

-you have a BWing with a couple torps, and the E2 mod, giving you a crew slot (Weapons Engineer). You currently have a Target Lock on 2 tie fighters (let's call them T1 and T2).

-combat phase comes up and you want to shoot your torps at T1. You spend "your" target lock (the operative word on the ordnance card), and get rid of the Target Lock token you have to T2. Then you discard your Torpedo card and make the attack. You now still have your Target Lock to T1 to use if you whiff the dice.

Is that legal? I took a quick scan through the FAQ and did not see anything that negated it...

Experts please advise!

I believe there was wording that you can only spend a target lock when you're attacking the targeted ship. Otherwise, you're not allowed to simply "spend" the token.

In the new Rules Reference under Seconday Weapons it says: "The “Attack (target lock):” header indicates that the attacker must have a target lock on the defender. The attacker does not need to spend this target lock unless instructed by the Upgrade card."

If you still have the old rules, on page 11

The attacker may spend target lock tokens only when he is attacking a ship that his lock is targeting (i.e., the red target lock token near the targeted ship must match the letter on the blue target lock token near the attacker).

In order fire a missile or torpedo that requires spending a target lock, that target lock must be on the ship you're shooting at. So Weapons Engineer doesn't give you a spare that you can use for anything.

Latts has a target lock on a target. If he uses ordnance and spends his TL, does his ability kick in as well?

(Player's game I was watching tried it and I said that it wouldn't work but then he argued that its not spending a TL to trigger but triggered on a spent. Got me thinking about it.)

After card review I would say he would have to spend on missile or spend on Latt's ability. He couldn't use one spent TL for pilot ability and missile launch.
