Multiple Motivations

By zhunterzz, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Hello All.

I am new to SWRPG with FnD. I have created a character and recently joined a group. I read through the book on this one and searched this site an others but have been unable to find an answer.

On the character sheet, there is a location for two different motivations, but I don't see anywhere that it's mentioned that characters choose two. Is this something just not mentioned? Why are there two different boxes for motivations?

Been a while since I looked at the random Motivation charts, but I believe there is an option that if rolled tells you to roll again twice and take both results as your Motivations.

Personally, I tend to play a lot of my PCs as having two Motivations, as it gives the PC more than one driving force behind why they're doing what they do.

Table 2-3 (F&D Core, p105) allows for multiple motivations on a roll of 10 (though that's actually a roll of "0" on most d10).

On the same token, there's nothing prohibiting you from taken more than one Motivation, either. I don't see why a GM wouldn't allow for as many as the player would like, provided they are different categories. It allows for some basis for roleplay and doesn't really provide any intrinsic mechanical benefit.

I allow as many motivations as someone wants as long as they fit the character story. Just adds to players drive to roleplay different aspects of their pc

I usually recommend to my players that they take more than one Motivation to make things interesting and more realistic. One that's in-line with their Obligation and/or main personality type, and one that's completely unrelated or even contradictory.

I would also support a player wanting to pick up a second motivation based on things that come up holistically during play. Say for example, during a big, crazy firefight, the big burly gunner has to rescue some poor kid from the crossfire, gets saddled with it at first, and then grows to honestly like the kid by the time the child's parents he misses the little pip-squeak and decides he is now motivated by a desire to put down roots and start a family of his own.
