League rules

By Smutpedler, in X-Wing Organized Play

Hi all

I was wondering if anyone has any sample/example league rules they would be kind enough to link me to?

Thinking of starting a small local league to get players together a bit more but really not sure where to start in terms of set up etc.

I'm searching for a set of league rules as well. Will post it here if I find something.

There's lots of options and plenty of examples from existing leagues. The Houston area league is on it's second season. We are using tournament type scoring with a regular season followed by playoffs. What we did for each season is we decided on the basic squad building rules and the season length, then asked for signups. Once we had people signed up we decided on the number of divisions and the size of the playoffs. Since Houston is a bit spread out, we went with geographic divisions so people didn't have to travel too far. In season 1 we had each participant choose a squad of pilots for each faction. Then in each game your opponent could pick which faction you flew, and after they made their choice you could add your upgrades (to combat the faction you chose for them). This season we simplified it a bit and you just choose your pilots, then you can add upgrades once you see the pilots your opponent chose.

Season 1 had 3 divisions of 6 and everyone played each player in their division once, followed by a playoff with the top 4 (3 division winners plus the top non division winner). Season 2 is underway and we have 6 divisions of 4 with everyone playing the others in their division twice each. Then we'll have a top 8 playoff (6 division winners, plus the top two non division winners).

Here are the full rules for season 2:
Schedule and Divisions
1 Each player must sign up on the spreadsheet linked below by SEPT 30
2 Each player will sign up for their top three store choices where they prefer to play. Only list stores you would be willing to play 100% of your league games at. You do not have to fill out all 3 stores.
3 We will have 4 person divisions, and you will play each other person in your division twice.
4 Each week, players will be paired together and must meet sometime during that week for a game.
5 It is up to each player to work with their opponent to find a time and place to play. If for some reason the two can not meet in a given week (for whatever reason) they may take a one week extension.
Squad Building
6 At the game, each player will simultaneously reveal their chosen pilots.
7 You may not choose the same set of pilots after two wins with those pilots.
8 Players will then choose their upgrades after the pilot choices have been revealed
9 Final squads should follow standard rules, meaning 100 points or less.
10 Any officially released expansion is legal, even if it is released mid season.
Season Length and Playoffs
11 The rankings of players within each division will be according to FFG tournament rules (5 points for a win, 3 points for a modified win, 1 point for a tie, Head to Head is the first tiebreaker, Margin of Victory is the second tie breaker)
12 The regular season will be 6 weeks.
13 There will be 8 players that make the playoffs. This will include all division winners, plus the top 2 non-division winners (based on the rankings rules above).
14 In the playoffs, you must choose one squad you used in a regular season game. This squad is used for all playoff games.
15 Once you've chosen your playoff squad, you will pick upgrades once. These upgrades are used for all playoff games.
16 The playoffs will all take place on 1 day in the 7th week of the season (the week prior to Thanksgiving)
Entry Fee and Prizes
17 There will be an entry fee and prizes. The entry fee will be $10. The entry fee must be paid in order to receive the participation prize. If the entry fee is not paid, you will not be allowed to participate in the next season of the league.
18 There will be a participation prize
19 There will be a prize for the league champion
20 There will be additional prizes for other top finishers - TBD depending on total entries

Thanks for the reply and info. We've just started to run a casual league up to the TFA release date to test out our rules etc. We just went for a simple system of 1 game against each opponent with tournament rules applying (except for longer round lengths) and league points awarded for wins/draws etc.

We may move to something a bit more organised in the new year but this was just to get everyone out of the woodwork and playing. Seems to be working so far :)
