I <3 Fel

By DarthMuz, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Not usually one to write up but had to share this. Tonight I tried out the TIE Punisher for the first time (Deathrain with Cluster and Proxy mines) with Fel (Stealth + Autothrusters) and 2 Academy Pilots. Came up against Bossk with a bunch of stuff and two twin laser Y-Wings.

Academies did as expected. Deathrain got to drop one proxy and maybe fired two primary weapon shots before being blown out of the sky. This left Fel to take down i think 16 hit points across the three scum ships. I joked to one of the other guys that this game would be over soon and we could have another game, and he said if anyone could win it from here it was Fel.

The less damaged Y-wing was the first casualty, Fel still unscathed. He then zoomed across the board, went head on with the other Y-Wing that was already down to 1 hit point, and blew him away. Then it was a game of cat and mouse with the flying sandcrawler, still with shields left. My only chance was to get in behind (obviously) but it was also still packing a hot shot blaster. At some point I suffered a hit and a crit (munitions failure woo!) so was down to my last hull. I got behind it, and the hot shot blaster turned up three hits, but thanks to the evade token and autothrusters, Fel successfully dodged. From then it was a formality. Bossk tried to boost away, but Fel just boosted after him. A couple of turns later, it was over. Fel limped back to base while Bossk floated home.

Might try the other Punisher pilot next time but never leaving home without Fel again!

Edit: The proximity mine didn't even detonate.

Fel is certainly a game-winner if you can't catch him, but I have a question: if Fel got a hit and a crit and only Bossk was on the table, why wasn't it an instant double damage and a dead Fel?

Answer: I'm not the only loser that noobishly forgets his pilot abilities or upgrades from time to time...

Now that I've gone and looked at the Bossk ability, it wasn't that it was forgotten, turns out my opponent was doing it incorrectly the whole time. Instead of cancelling the crit when dealing damage, he was changing the crit result to two hits before I rolled defense dice. It was the first time I had faced Bossk and my opponent has only been playing a few months so chalk that one down to inexperience I suppose. I guess he had 2 crits that roll, changed one to two hits and so a hit and a crit were left after my roll. So two damage was probably the end result anyway if the ability was done correctly. eh, whatever.

Still, I had given up all hope in that game but to be able to get out of range of one twin laser, into the hole and out of arc of the other all while avoiding fire from the other big thing until the final confrontation...sometimes I amaze even myself!
