Imperial Astromech?
I'll admit I'm actually surprised no <crew> type astromech upgrade was released with the Raider. There does seem to be a droid looking picture in one of the upgrade cards seen in the production shot from the spoilers of the Gozanti.
Still i don't think there will be any droids in TIEs or other Star Fighters (unless we see them in later movies). So for the most part all Imperial droids will be <crew> type upgrades.
Edited by MarinealverIf you want to do it as a crew card, I believe R5-Q9 is a black astromech assigned to palpatine's shuttle. Giving him an effect similar to an R2 astromech - letting a decimator or lambda make green hard turns - would make a hell of a difference!
Just because there is an astromech in [product x] doesn't mean it'll have a place in this game of course.
There have been imperial astromechs before after all.
This was a droid in the show. I don't see why he'll appear at all in XWMG.
He was dropped out of The Ghost from like, 2-3km by a jealous Chopper.
Pretty sure we saw at least one black/chrome astro on the Death Star. Then again, we've not seen a Thrawn crew card yet, so there's a lot of places they can go to find portraits for some new effect.

Yes but you forgot Grand Admiral Thrawn's greatest nemesis:

And he doesn't believe in the EU! ![]()

You don't honestly think Thrawn won't appear ever, do you?

I could see him as a crew member on the Gozanti.
A lot of the named characters are very short lived. Greedo the crew member, all the named Rebel Y-wing pilots.

But why give an Astromech to the Imperials when you can have the same effect by using a humanoid crewmember? Giving astromechs to the Imps will only dilute the identity of the factions, making them more samey.

The imperials have had their two unique abilities - cloak and bombs - given to the other factions. Perhaps its time to share the trashcans out? Don't worry - we'd take great care of the little fellas!

Just for flavor reasons. It's not like it goes in an Astromech slot on a ship, and the Empire used Astromechs onboard their ships so it makes sense for them to get some as crew members. If sameyness is a problem, maybe you don't use any of the crew cards that have a picture of someone wearing an Imperial uniform?
You don't honestly think Thrawn won't appear ever, do you?
Ask JJ? I don't see any E or K-wings or TIE-Defender in the trailer and there is no Dash Rendar or Kyle Katan listed as characters.
The Empire won't get an Astromech slot. That's a Rebel exclusive slot: note that R2-D2 isn't Rebel Only. That's why Scum has Salvaged Astromech.
For the Empire to get astromechs, they in turn would need their own astromech slot. Given they have a grand total of one astromeched fighter (the ARC-170) that's hugely outdated, I don't find it likely.
That's not to say they won't ever get a crew card with an astromech on it, but the astromech slot isn't about to faction hop.
You don't honestly think Thrawn won't appear ever, do you?
I hope not. Thrawn was a serious Mary Sue.
Thrawn admired a Rodin he'd "liberated" from a collector on Omicron Persei-8.
"Oh, I think Luke will eat two eggs and take ****."
Two chapters later, Luke would eat two eggs and take a ****.
"Just as planned...." said Thrawn, twirling his smurf mustache.
This would go on for... pretty much all of the series. Zahn couldn't write his way out of a paper bag.

This Lego droid doesn't look like that one from rebels. The droid chopper tried to murder had a tall, conical head, not a dome like r2. Thus one looks a lot more like one of the droids seen in the background on the death star.

No one in this thread has suggested an imperial astromech slot. The discussion is entirely about imperial only astromechs in the (crew) slot. On the lambda, gozanti, raider, decimator and the like.

The spherical Q series droid used in the V-wing don't preclude 'normal' r series astromechs because we see BB-8 has the ability to fit regular old x and y- wing slots, not to mention the Exclusively for r7 E-wing that later allows all astromechs.
Of course there would be a special 'military astromech' slot or something for imperial ships.
And of course there can be any kind of crew upgrades including astromechs. Or even protocol droids. And imperial only. It shouldn't be shoking at all.

And I thought Mara Jade was the Mary Sue. Thrawn was at least imposing and interesting in that he wasn't actually force sensative yet was a powerful and effective person.
It will be interesting to see if TFA does with Anakin's old blue saber what Zahn did.
And now we are completely off topic.

Funnily/sadly enough, even if I agreed with your opinion on Thrawn, I maintain he still remains the most compelling/interesting antagonist to come out of the old EU.

What bearing does that have on a crew card showing up in our multiverse-based timey wimey ball of game?
Obviously seeing cards like that packed with TFA expansion packs is a stretch, but for normal releases why not?

You may notice that Lego set is the Gozanti ("Imperial Assault Carrier").
You honestly believe JJ Abrams has a large say in the canonicity of the EU?
No. Because JJ Abrams is simply a director, and people seem to completely and utterly fail to realize that.
You don't honestly think Thrawn won't appear ever, do you?

Case and friggin' point.
People seem to believe JJ is 100% in charge of the direction Star Wars is taking. He's not. He has quite the hand in it, but if you honestly believe that several beloved characters from the EU won't ever return, then tell me this.
Why exactly are several bits of the EU popping up and at several points still being marketed? An HD Remake- not reskin, of KOTOR? The continued acknowledgement of said era, and even advertising its products in the recent comics?
Why, pray tell, are we seeing so many bits and pieces of the EU that are generally considered good, popping up here and there?
Oh. Right. A story team that's comprised of long time Star Wars fans is in charge of the new direction Star Wars is taking, and they have to consider the fanbase at several points as well- which they have indeed done with many nods to old works, verifying them in some ways.
Let's just, across the board, stop pretending the all powerful J.J. Abrams is in charge of modern Star Wars, shall we?
We're smarter than that.
